[En] Review: Nomadland (2020)
You may have heard about the movie Nomadland as it just won 3 Oscars. That made me think it was time to see how good it really is. Unfortunately no cinemas are open yet where I am (Netherlands) but I made it cozy at home to create that cinema feel.
The Movie
The movie, starring Frances McDormand (three billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri) follows an American woman in her 60s who after the loss of her husband has decided to embrace van life as she moves across the west of the US in search of temporary work, becoming a nomad. She meets other nomads and showcases the life of many in America who work hard but don't make enough money to live in a house.
The movie was produced by Chloe Zhao and I thought it was just beautiful.
I think what really struck me about this movie were two things:
The incredible scenery, it is just so beautiful. It really showcases the beauty of the wide open American landscape, while also showing the desolation and sometimes loneliness that comes with that.
The deeper layer of the movie: showing both the bad side of the American Dream (not everybody makes it, even though they work hard), but also the incredible tenacity of the Americans.
Rating
I loved loved this movie, McDermond was amazing, if you don't know her work yet, watch her movies and the landscape was insane. I was really touched at the end of it.
However, if like my boyfriend you enjoy movies 'where a lot happens' this is not for you, the movie is quite slow paced and has a lot of long shots. I love it, but it's not for everyone.
For those of you that have seen Nomadland, what did you think?
