In September 9 2022 The woman king was released by the Director gina prince-bythewood, even though the idea was first concieved by the story writer maria bello in 2015 when she visited benin,🇳🇬. Where the kingdom used to be located, and learning the history of the Agojie.
This movie is a true life based story about women warriors who defended their land from the oyo empire and fought against the europeans slaving the african kingdom of dahomey for money in the 1800’s even though it was the major source of wealth for the Agojie’s. In the movie king ghezo’ in exchange of slaves choose to trade palm oil instead, but the new offer didn’t go well with the europeans and the oyo army commander

Oba is the arch enemy of the dahomey kingdom personally hated by the agojie’s warrior leader nanisca.
Nanisca during her youth was captured and raped by oba, she barely escaped with her life heavily pregnant, she gave birth in exile with the help of her loyal friend Amenza whom she told to discard the child but instead gave the child away to some villager heading back to dahomey.
The agojie’s has some of the most fearsome warriors namely,” nanisca,amenza,izogie,ode and nawi who was later discovered to be nanisca long lost child.

Nawi was trained alongside her new colleagues by Izogie a very fierce lady.

The latter reconcilled as nanisca saw the exact birth mark she placed on her baby after birth on nawi. after a great war between the agojie warriors and the oyo empire nawi together with izogie was captured by oba’s troop’ this time they were aunctioned for sale to the europeans, they planned thier own escape but didn’t succeed as izogie died in the process trying to save nawi.malik an european a half breed whoose mother is from dahomey tried to buy nawi because he loved her, he saved her temporarily until nanisca whom could not bear the pain of loosing her daughter once more disobeyed the kings direct order and went to rescue nawi with some group of agojie’s warrior.

Nawi was rescued oba was killed and nanisca was installed into the post of kpojito thus becoming the first ever Woman king in Dahomey.
