Kurayukaba - Mysteries And Conflicts In The Darkness [ENG -ESP]
Some time ago I saw a very peculiar movie called Kurameru Kagari and the truth is that its peculiar animation style caught my attention so I decided to investigate its creator and it seems that he keeps this style as his personal brand so I was also interested in seeing another movie of this director which has not only the same style of the first one, it also seems to take place in the same world although evidently in different cities and obviously with a new story approach, this movie is called Kurayukaba and what really caught my attention is that both the first movie I mentioned and this one were released at the same time, both released on April 12, 2024, so they are not even 3 months old yet.
Kurayukaba is again based in a city where laws and public order seem to be not very common and additionally it also has a series of tunnels under the city where there is its own "world" another city and subway areas where the people who inhabit it are used to a more risky lifestyle and less public order, The same is constantly in trouble due to the gangs and groups that dispute the control of the subway cities and that as you might expect have no problem with unleashing a confrontation in the midst of the people from one moment to another.
In this story our protagonist will be Soutarou a young private investigator who is dedicated to solving mysteries and mostly looking for missing people, although it seems not to be the best investigator of all likewise has certain skills, but everything will become more complicated and dangerous when suddenly many mysterious disappearances occur where people leave no trace and in the place where they vanished only strange tire tracks remain.
The visual style and the way of life of the inhabitants manages to captivate and generate much interest in the story, something that can be uncomfortable is how at first it seems that everything is told to the viewer too fast and does not give you time to assimilate so many elements that are presented in a row to create an accelerated way to create part of the context behind our protagonist, the city where he lives, the anarchic situation of the subway areas and the mystery of the disappearances that will cause Soutarou to decide to descend into the subway darkness in search of the answer to this mystery.
This aspect, although it can be a little uncomfortable, ends up being understandable due to the short running time of the film, its entire duration barely exceeds one hour, so if we discount the time of the credits, we do not even have 60 minutes of development on screen. For this reason many aspects must be shown quickly and leaving many others to the interpretation of the viewer or narrated in an ambiguous way as the film develops.
Despite this limitation, it manages to quickly generate interest in the story due to the number of mysteries that are presented and the action so rampant and at the same time something fun that happens, it is understood how there is a "darkness" which can end up affecting people in the subway areas and how this can be an evil capable of destroying anyone who is devoured by the darkness. There are also several groups with different objectives battling each other, which help to complement the development of the adventure.
Undoubtedly the main strength of this film is its very special visual style, reminiscent of those old animated films of decades ago, but at the same time with a kind of sepia filter that ends up generating an older and nostalgic look than expected. Also its details cause a very good feeling and cause you a lot of interest for its way of drawing where it gives the impression of being drawings on somewhat rough surfaces and not smooth at all.
Although the time is quite short in the same way Kurayukaba manages to be entertaining and very exciting moments, the mystery manages to be quite intriguing and despite leaving many unanswered questions manages to have a good result for such a short film and practically without developing the background of the situations presented, I keep the interest of possible sequels where more of these stories are explained which at least at times manage to generate much curiosity about them.

Hace un tiempo vi una película muy peculiar llamada Kurameru Kagari y la verdad me llamo mucho la atención su estilo tan peculiar de animación así que decidí investigar a su creador y parece que mantiene este estilo como su marca personal por lo cual también me interesé por ver otra película de este director la cual tiene no solo el mismo estilo de la primera, también parece tomar lugar en el mismo mundo aunque evidentemente en ciudades diferentes y obviamente con un enfoque de historia nuevo, esta película se llama Kurayukaba y lo que realmente me llamo atención que es tanto la primera película que mencione como esta fueron publicadas al mismo instante, ambas lanzadas el 12 de abril del 2024, por lo cual aún no cuentan ni con 3 meses de antigüedad.
Kurayukaba se basa nuevamente en una ciudad en donde las leyes y el orden público parece no ser algo muy común y adicionalmente también cuenta con la existencia de una serie de túneles bajo la ciudad en donde existe su propio “mundo” otra ciudad y zonas subterráneas en donde la gente que lo habita está acostumbrada a un estilo de vida más arriesgado y con menos orden público, la misma está constantemente en problemas debido a las pandillas y grupos que se disputan el control de las ciudades subterráneas y que como se podría esperar no tienen inconvenientes con desatar un enfrentamiento en medio de la gente de un momento a otro.
En esta historia nuestro protagonista será Soutarou un joven investigador privado que se dedica a resolver misterios y mayormente buscar a personas desaparecidas, aunque parece no ser el mejor investigador de todos de igual manera tiene ciertas habilidades, pero todo se volverá más complicado y peligroso cuando de pronto ocurren muchas desapariciones misteriosas en donde las personas no dejan rastro y en el lugar donde se esfumaron solo quedan unas huellas extrañas de neumáticos.
El estilo visual y la forma de vida de los habitantes consigue cautivar y generar mucho interés por la historia, algo que puede resultar incómodo es como en un principio parece que todo se va contando al espectador demasiado rápido y no te da tiempo de asimilar tantos elementos que se van presentando de forma seguida para de una manera acelerada crear parte del contexto detrás de nuestro protagonista, la ciudad en donde vive, la anárquica situación de las zonas subterráneas y el misterio de las desapariciones que provocaran que Soutarou decida descender a la oscuridad subterránea en busca de la respuesta a este misterio.
Este aspecto, aunque puede resultar un poco incómodo, termina siendo entendible debido al poco tiempo de la película, toda su duración apenas logra superar la hora por lo cual descontando el tiempo de los créditos no contamos ni con 60 minutos de desarrollo en pantalla. Por este motivo muchos aspectos deben mostrarse de forma rápida y dejando muchos otros a la interpretación del espectador o narrarse de forma ambigua a medida que se va desarrollando la película.
A pesar de esta limitante, consigue generar rápidamente interés por la historia debido a la cantidad de misterios que se presentan y la acción tan desenfrenada y al mismo tiempo algo divertida que va ocurriendo, se deja entender como hay una “oscuridad” la cual puede terminar afectando a las personas de las zonas subterráneas y como esta puede ser una maldad capaz de destruir a todo aquel que se deje devorar por la oscuridad. También hay varios grupos con diferentes objetivos batallando entre sí, que ayudan a complementar el desarrollo de la aventura.
Sin dudas el principal fuerte de esta película es su estilo visual tan especial, recuerda a esas antiguas películas animadas de décadas atrás, pero al mismo tiempo con una especie de filtro sepia que termina generando un aspecto más antiguo y nostálgico de lo esperado. También sus detalles causan un sentimiento muy bueno y te causa mucho interés por su forma de dibujar en donde da la impresión de tratarse de dibujos sobre superficies algo rugosas y para nada lisas.
Aunque el tiempo es bastante corto de igual forma Kurayukaba logra ser entretenida y por instantes muy emocionantes, el misterio logra ser bastante intrigante y a pesar de dejar muchas dudas inconclusas consigue tener un buen resultado para una película tan corta y prácticamente sin desarrollar el trasfondo de las situaciones que se presenta, mantengo el interés de posibles secuelas en donde se explique más de estas historias las cuales al menos por momentos logran generarte mucha curiosidad sobre las mismas.

This movie is very cool, the animation and the story are quite interesting. In fact Kuramerukagari is the second part, this is the first one, you saw it backwards but it doesn't matter hahaha.
Anyway the plots complement each other a bit so the order may not affect that much.
I didn't know hahaha, yes I realized that the design and everything suggests that they happen in the same world, but well as you say there is no relation between one and the other haha. it would be interesting a third installment where the protagonists of the two are mixed :D
