One of the incredible things in the world of anime is the freedom and even a little absurdity that we can find in the stories, many times the stories include elements or plot twists really surprising and even a little nonsense, in the same way we can see how a story that begins with a premise, slowly changing it as it develops to the point of practically take for granted the first premise that was shown. Ibara no Ou is a 2009 film which besides having a very striking premise, manages to leave it aside completely and make you focus on the new background that develops as gore and psychological elements appear.
The initial premise of Ibara no Ou caught my attention from the beginning, a strange virus called Medusa appears in the world and this virus has the peculiarity of turning people into stone making them die at the moment of petrifying, its origin, forms of transmission are unknown and apparently there is no way to cure it. For this reason everyone lives in fear of dying from this virus because when it begins to present symptoms the person dies in 12 hours. It has reached such a point of risk for humanity that extinction is practically certain and it is decided to create a project to put part of the population to sleep in frozen dreams so that humanity does not disappear.
This beginning was very interesting and reminded me a lot of the anime Dr Stone, a deadly and strange virus premise that is about to extinguish humankind is very striking, but this lasts little as the center of the plot and after seeing how a lot of people are put in the dream capsules, we see how they wake up in what now seems to be a post-apocalyptic world, completely full of roots with giant thorns and monsters with a very intimidating appearance and appearance as hybrid plants.
Quickly everyone dies leaving the small group of characters that will be 7 at first and where Ishiki Kasumi will be the protagonist of this story, looking for how to get reunited with her twin who could not be part of the icy dream project, despite the premise that probably spent more than 100 years asleep, little by little they will go through the difficulties of this new world and trying to avoid the enemies, although luckily it seems that there was a resistance in the area before the death of the humans so there is a great weaponry everywhere, creating an element of action in the story and not just running away from the creatures.
As the story progresses we see the fantasy aspect, but at the same time so deadly where our protagonists appeared, a reality taken from the tale of Sleeping Beauty where the forest of thorns seems to have engulfed the whole world. The group of 7 survivors must learn to cooperate and trust each other quickly, all being complete strangers, but now they must work together to try to escape the facility alive, in the same way we see part of Kasumi's past, all the things she has had to go through and part of her traumas, showing us the reason why she is so desperate to see her twin again, who for her is the most important reason to stay alive.
The main attraction of Ibara no Ou is undoubtedly the constant evolution of the story, the surprises and outcomes that occur as the story progresses, it is very interesting how it manages to handle in a good way such a changing story and although in some aspects there are doubts, it manages to keep you with the intrigue of what will really happen, we see how as the plot progresses it seems that some characters are not what they say they are, that it is not a simple chance of fate that they are together trying to survive, even adds more and more supernatural and science fiction aspects. It involves so many aspects that you will never know what is going to happen or what is really the origin of all this strange situation.
Despite being a 15 year old movie, its animation is of very good quality, in some moments we have brief scenes that seem to be made with CGI, but at all times the quality is maintained quite well and manages to maintain a good result and be very comfortable to watch. The ending of this film is undoubtedly very surprising and unexpected, it has very good plot twists and manages to create a feeling of empathy with almost all the characters, although as you might expect not all of them get their happy ending. Perhaps the only aspect a little wasted or left aside was the initial focus on the Medusa virus, new mysteries and approaches are created so well that when everything ends for a moment it seems as if the virus had passed to an almost irrelevant background, although being a small detail does not affect that Ibara no Ou is a very good and entertaining film.

Una de las cosas tan increíbles en el mundo del anime es la libertad y hasta un poco absurdez que podemos encontrar en las historias, muchas veces las historias incluyen elementos o giros de trama realmente sorprendentes y hasta un poco sin sentido, del mismo modo podemos ver como una historia que comienza por una premisa, lentamente la van cambiando a medida que se desarrolla la misma hasta el punto de prácticamente dar por sentado la primera premisa que se mostro. Ibara no Ou se trata de una película del año 2009 la cual además de tener una premisa muy llamativa, consigue dejarla de lado completamente y hacer que ten centres en el nuevo trasfondo que se va desarrollando a medida que aparecen elementos gore y psicológicos.
La premisa inicial de Ibara no Ou me llamo la atención desde el inicio, en el mundo aparece un extraño virus llamado Medusa y este virus tiene la particularidad de convertir en piedra a las personas haciéndolas morir al momento de petrificarse, se desconoce su origen, formas de trasmisión y al parecer no hay forma de curarlo. Por este motivo todos viven con el temor a morir por este virus debido a que cuando empieza a presentar síntomas la persona muere en 12 horas. Llego hasta tal punto de riesgo para la humanidad que es prácticamente seguro la extinción y se decide crear un proyecto para dormir en sueños helados a una parte de la población para que la humanidad no desaparezca.
Este comienzo me resulto muy interesante y me hizo recordar mucho al anime Dr Stone, una premisa de virus mortal y extraño que está a punto de extinguir a la humidad es muy llamativa, pero esto dura poco como el centro de la trama y es que luego de ver como una gran cantidad de personas son puestas en las capsulas de sueños, vemos como se despierta en lo que ahora parece ser un mundo postapocalíptico, completamente repleto de raíces con espinas gigantes y monstruos con un aspecto muy intimidante y apariencia como hibrida de plantas.
Rápidamente todos mueren quedando el pequeño grupo de personajes que serán 7 en un principio y en donde Ishiki Kasumi será la protagonista de esta historia, buscando como conseguir reunirse con su gemela quien no pudo ser parte del proyecto de sueño helado, a pesar de la premisa que probablemente pasaron más de 100 años dormidos, poco a poco irán sorteando las dificultades de este nuevo mundo y tratando de evitar a los enemigos, aunque por suerte parece que hubo una resistencia en la zona antes de la muerte de los humanos por lo cual hay un gran armamento por todos lados, creando un elemento de acción en la historia y no simplemente huir de las criaturas.
A medida que avanza la historia vamos viendo el aspecto tan fantasioso, pero al mismo tiempo tan mortal en donde aparecieron nuestros protagonistas, una realidad sacada del cuento de la bella durmiente en donde el bosque de espinas parece haber engullido al mundo entero. El grupo de 7 sobrevivientes deben aprender a cooperar y confiar rápidamente en los demás, todos siendo completos desconocidos, pero ahora deberán trabajar juntos para intentar escapar de las instalaciones con vida, del mismo modo vamos viendo parte del pasado de Kasumi, todas las cosas por las que ha tenido que pasar y parte de sus traumas, mostrándonos el motivo por el cual esta tan desesperada de volver a ver a su gemela, quien para ella es la razón más importante para seguir viva.
el atractivo principal de Ibara no Ou es sin dudas la constante evolución de la historia, las sorpresas y desenlaces que van ocurriendo a medida que avanza la historia, es muy interesante como logra manejar de buena manera una historia tan cambiante y aunque en algunos aspectos quedan dudas, consigue mantenerte con la intriga de que será realmente lo que sucede, vemos como a medida que avanza la trama parece que algunos personajes no son lo que dicen ser, que no es un simple azar del destino que estén juntos tratando de sobrevivir, incluso agrega cada vez más aspectos sobrenaturales y de ciencia ficción. Involucra tantos aspectos que nunca sabrás que va suceder ni cual es realmente el origen de toda esta extraña situación.
A pesar de ser una película con 15 años de antigüedad, su animación es de muy buena calidad, en algunos momentos contamos con breves escenas que parecen ser hechas con CGI, pero en todo momento la calidad se mantiene bastante bien y consigue mantener un buen resultado y ser muy cómoda de ver. El final de esta película es sin dudas muy sorpresivo e inesperado, cuenta con muy buenos giros en la trama y logra crear un sentimiento de empatía con casi todos los personajes, aunque como se podría esperar no todos logran tener su final feliz. Tal vez el único aspecto un poco desaprovechado o dejado de lado fue el enfoque inicial del virus Medusa, se crean tan bien nuevos misterios y enfoques que cuando todo termina por un instante parece como si el virus hubiera pasado a un segundo plano casi irrelevante, aunque siendo un pequeño detalle no afecta en que Ibara no Ou sea una muy buena y entretenida película.

I reviewed this movie a few weeks ago, how cool that someone else has seen it.
Undoubtedly for me the ending was the most striking, I did not expect it, those plot twists are appreciated. Also that it is a film that everyone should give its meaning, I think it varies according to the eye that looks, I like the interpretation of the viewer because it is all very open. It is a good film, the animation is also very successful.
it really was a completely unexpected ending, they don't give any clue of what is going to happen or at least not so clear that you can guess it, throughout the story there are aspects that as you say everyone can interpret them in their own way, a very good movie and it is very good that with the years it has still has a great quality in its animation even for today :D
Buah, 15 años desde que salió esta película y aún a la fecha se ve increíble y mucho mejor que muchos animes de la actualidad. Recuerdo la sensación que me dió la película al verla la primera vez con esa mezcla de terror post-apocalíptico. Los personajes están muy bien desarrollados, sobre todo la protagonista, y la calidad de animación y uso del CGI está muy bien hecho. La banda sonora es también una maravilla. Lo que más me voló la cabeza fue el desenlace final, no me lo esperaba, la verdad.

if no one tells you that you can't imagine that the movie is 15 years old, the animation is super good. the character development is very well done considering the time of the movie and the amount of characters, also the ending is completely unexpected and leaves you thinking a thousand things. a great movie to watch, it would be great a continuation but I'm not sure if there is one.
