CineTV Contest #61: Beer and Bullets (by @kork75)
Inglourious Basterds |

One film that has an epic scene with beer is Inglourious Basterds by Quentin Tarantino. One of the cult scenes of the film is set in a French tavern where a group of Nazi soldiers celebrate with mugs of beer. In reality, it is the location of the rendezvous between a German actress who is an Allied spy and the Basterds led by Brad Pitt. The beer adds a festive and relaxed atmosphere to the scene, but at the same time increases tension because the audience knows something is about to happen. Beer plays a key role in the scene because it is the reason why the characters are there and interact with each other. The beer scene is important for the plot of the film because it is the turning point where Colonel Hans Landa, played by Christoph Waltz, who turns out to be a brilliant and ruthless Jewish hunter, discovers the Allies' plan. Landa manages to unmask Lieutenant Archie Hicox, one of the British secret agents infiltrated in the tavern, thanks to an involuntary gesture: Hicox orders three glasses of whiskey using his thumb, index and middle fingers instead of his little finger, ring finger and middle finger as Germans do. This detail triggers a shootout that causes the death of almost everyone present except Landa and actress Bridget Von Hammersmark, who is injured in one leg.
The beer scene is also a demonstration of Tarantino's mastery in creating brilliant and ironic dialogues but also full of suspense and violence. The director plays with the expectations of the viewer, making them believe that everything can go well or badly at any moment. The contrast between the lightness of beer and the gravity of the situation creates a comic and dramatic effect at the same time. The film "Inglourious Basterds" is a masterpiece by Tarantino that rewrites World War II history in an original and entertaining way. The film mixes different genres such as westerns, thrillers and war cinema and pays homage to Italian war films from the 70s. The film won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for Christoph Waltz. If you haven't seen it yet, I recommend you catch up as soon as possible!
