My Timeless Christmas Film Selection II
Two more weeks to Christmas! I'm sure I'm not the only one excited about this season so let's talk about Christmas movies — not the cheesy, boring ones everywhere now thanks to Hallmark and Netflix. Yesterday, I wrote a little highlight of timeless holiday films released some years ago. They are African-American movies and I'll take them over any of the current films streaming online.
In this post, I'll highlight more holiday films that are so good and will remain on my favourite Christmas list for many years to come. They'll never get old for me. At this point, I'm guessing you think I'll discuss Christmas With The Kranks or The Polar Express or How The Grinch Stole Christmas. No, sir!
My next timeless Christmas selection are:
Miracle On 34th Street (1994)
This film is a reboot of the original 1947 version. I've not seen the original version but I love this remake of it! I saw this film when I was a teenager, you know that phase of life when everything looks rosy. Hehe. The romance part got my attention then.
This fantasy film brings to life Kris Kringle, an elderly man with snow-white beard as Santa Claus. The debate was whether he's real or a myth. He takes up the job of Santa Claus at Cole's department store and Dorey visits with her six year old daughter, Susan. They quickly form a bond with Kris because he's super nice and magical. Susan whispers to Kris her Christmas wish—a dad, a house and a baby brother.
Wow, that's quite some wishes. Is Santa Claus real? Will he find Dorey a loving husband and fulfil Susan's wishes? This film is fantastic and heartwarming. It's family themed and children will love it too. Everytime I watch it, I'm swept back to that Christmas when I first saw this film.
The Holiday (2006)
I'm not sure if it's because I have a crush on the handsome Jude Law or that this film is simply fascinating. First, Nancy Meyers is the brain behind this romantic comedy and several other fine flicks like The Parent Trap (1998), What Women Want (2000), Something's Gotta Give (2003) etc. She has a talent for quality films like these.
The Holiday gives us a taste of Christmas in England and California. It's about two ladies who do a home exchange at Christmas to escape heartbreak and they both find love at the end. The star actors are Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Shannyn Sossamon and others.
The cinematography is excellent. The scenic views of picturesque cottage homes in England villages and mansions in California graced my screen. I also love that Cameron Diaz and Jude Law were paired together as love interests. Their chemistry was real.
Love Actually (2003)
How can I not talk about this Christmas romantic comedy by Richard Curtis. I see this film as a classic and a must watch every holiday season. The ensemble of British actors got my attention at first. The storytelling is outstanding!
This film displays the different types of love in ten stories at Christmas. These stories are skillfully intertwined into the plot, giving us a spectacular ending in the shape of a heart. How else are we to view Christmas—a season of love, giving and sharing.
The editing and transitions of this film are so well-done that you won't notice the subplots are taking place in different settings. I love, love this film and it will remain on my favourite list forever. Curtis is a genius.
Spirited (2022)
This film was released last year and after I saw it, I knew I'd gotten a new addition to my favourite Christmas selection. This musical comedy is a collaboration of Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds in a fantastic retelling of Charles Dickens' novella A Christmas Carol.
I've always felt this novella has been rehashed too many times and as such, I'm not interested in watching another version of it. Then Spirited was released in 2022 with these talented actors as main characters and I devoured it. The Scrooge and three Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future are presented in this film in a fascinating way coupled with melodious musicals.
With this new addition, I look forward every December to seeing Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds in Christmas action whenever I watch this film.
This is the second part of my favourite Christmas movie selection. Share your timeless Christmas favourites in the comment section.
