Goofy But Not So Delightful —Review Of The Out-Laws (2023)

Billy and Lilly, Parker's parents show up and Owen takes them out. He gets drunk and spills details of his bank's security. The next morning, the bank is robbed by two cloaked people known as "the ghost bandits". From the demeanour and body movements, Owen suspects it's his soon-to-be in-laws but he has no way of proving it. When he tells Parker, she doesn't believe him and expresses her disappointment in him.

All hell is let loose when Rehan, a notorious outlaw kidnaps Parker and demands a ransom of five million dollars. Where will Owen and his soon-to-be in-laws get the money? Can they save Parker on time before the wedding?

Review

Seeing Adam Sandler as one of the producers of The Out-Laws encouraged me to expect a fabulous, rib-cracking flick. The plot is mediocre, a cute but unexpected way for a fiancé to meet his in-laws to-be. However, no one will suspect they are popular bank robbers that the FBI have been searching for! It's not a bad plot but the pace started slow. It picks up when Billy (played by Pierce Brosnan) and Lilly (Ellen Barkin) appear as the in-laws. From this point, the money heist begins and so does the action.

I enjoyed the action, the robberies, and the car chases. The humour was good but there were some parts where it did not sink in well, resulting in awkward silences. I expected more humorous scenes but was a bit disappointed. Some of the jokes are built around sex and violence which in my opinion is not impressive. Seventy per cent of comedians nowadays feel their act is incomplete without a sex joke in it. I'll say it's simply vulgarity.

The performance of the cast was great, in my opinion, except for Adam DeVine's. I know he's supposed to be funny, clumsy and cute but somehow, his part did not sit well with me. I enjoyed Pierce Brosnan's acting! He still maintains that sleek and suave demeanour that endears his audience. I've always loved his films and at his age, he delivers an impressive performance. Nina Dobrev too was great though her parts were: look pretty and smile. I wish something with some action was added to her scenes in the film.

The only scene I cringed at while watching and wished director Tyler Spindel did not make was the crazy drive through the cemetery! I know the filmmakers want to make the car chase gripping and funny but truly, there was nothing delightful about crashing through a cemetery and destroying gravestones to escape the cops. I believe that some subjects or ways of life should be sacred and off-limits in comedy.

Overall, The Out-Laws is not a bad flick. It's an enjoyable movie that you see once and forget about it. I'll rate it 3 stars out of 5. Note it's R-rated for language, violence and sexual material.
