I have seen movies on plane hijacking and thought there was nothing new to this rather overused storyline until I watched the first two episodes of the new thriller series released via Apple TV+. But why this particular series? I love thrillers and most importantly, the film features my crush, Idris Elba! I don't care what the review of critics may say but if Idris is in it, it's the best flick then. Okay, kidding.

Hijack (2023) is a seven episodes miniseries written by George Kay and directed by Jim Field Smith to cover a seven-hour flight from Dubai to London. Within the first hour of the flight, a young lady discovers a bullet in the restroom which quickly leads to a group of agents waving guns around and taking control of the plane.

On board this flight is Sam Nelson (played by Idris Elba), a negotiator who specialises in corporate mergers and takeovers. He carefully watches these agents and begins to plot how the passengers will survive the ordeal. Will he succeed in convincing the leader of this nefarious group that he's on their side? Will the flight make it safely to its destination without suspicion from any quarters? What are the demands of this dangerous group?

Review

Idris Elba is a charismatic and talented actor who uses his magnetism to bring a movie, no matter how bad it may turn out to be, to the limelight. As the lead actor and executive producer, he was simply outstanding. I love that this miniseries follows the style of the popular series 24, each episode covering an hour.

The plot of the miniseries is brilliant and quite interesting, especially when the lead actor is a skilled negotiator who must ensure the safety of the 200-plus passengers aboard the flight with his skills while those on the ground — air traffic controllers, law enforcement officers, government officials and the like — piece together what’s happened, and figure out how to respond.

I love suspenseful thrillers and this one has it in high doses. In every scene, with every move and glance of the passengers, the tension builds. Viewers are kept on the edge of their seats wondering what will happen next. Curiosity regarding the nefarious group's demand is high. I'm sure in the next episodes, it will be disclosed.

So far, I'm impressed with the performance of the cast. Idris as the lead is great, of course. The supporting cast is great too but they don't have much screen time. In these two episodes, very little is known about some of them while the major focus is on Idris Elba. I hope this strategy works out in the end.

Most of the action takes place on the plane while the rest includes the investigations at the airports. There's one scene that tugged at my heartstrings in the second episode. A friendly Dubai air traffic controller (played by Mohamed Faisal Mostafa) who ensured the smooth takeoff of KA-29 goes out of his way to investigate things when he's suspicious about the safety of the flight. He ends up getting shot in the head. It was his birthday.

Overall, this miniseries is worth watching. I'm in suspense and awaiting the release of the remaining five episodes. I know they'll be action-packed. It's best to binge-watch Hijack when the episodes have been aired.
