Entertaining And Spooky || Review Of The Canterville Ghost (2023)
It's been a while since I've watched an animated film but I found this one and it piqued my interest very much. It's my kind of film—spooky and adventurous—but fitting for children. Though most animated films are made for children, they are suitable for adults as well because we understand and grasp the message faster than children can.
Based on Oscar Wilde's short story, The Canterville Ghost (2023) is a British animated film about a spirited ghost named Sir Simon de Canterville who haunts the Canterville estate for 300 years by scaring off the owners. They often end up in aylsum. Then a new family, the Otis from America, moves into the English estate and all efforts to scare them fails. Who are these new people and why are they not afraid of scary ghosts? Why does Sir Simon haunt his own estate?
Review
Having not seen an animated film in a while, I found this one quite fascinating. The plot is good, riveting in fact. There's a ghost who's turned all owners of the English mansion crazy except for this modern American family. There must be something different about them and finding out what it is is attention-grabbing. The film explores the contrast between old fashioned lifestyle versus modern life and the theme of letting go of the past.
Though the visuals and CGI are not exactly state-of-the-art, the voice acting is done with such enthusiasm that is attractive. I've always been a fan of English culture and products, so suffice to say, I enjoyed the gusto of the voice actors. The spooky and loud voice of sir Simon, the ghost, in sync with the sound can give a person the heebie-jeebies.
The characters I find entertaining and amusing are the twin sons of the Otis family. They are mischievous and end up scaring the scary ghost! What an irony.
The addition of flashbacks in paper puppet/cartoonish form to tell the backstory is a nice touch, I think. Children will love that part.
Overall, I'll say the filmmakers did a great job with this animation. I've not read the book of the same name written by Oscar Wilde or seen the older versions of this film, but this one is good. If you're into Victorian fantasy and ghost stories and don't mind animation, you'll love this one. I'll especially recommend this film for cinephiles who don't like horror but won't mind a fine ghost film and also the young ones. The mischief of the Otis' children and the dramatics of the ghost will keep them entertained.
