Mi admiración por Frances McDormand | My admiration for Frances McDormand
Me enteré que hoy, 23 de junio, es la fecha de nacimiento de Frances McDormand, una de las actrices del cine de Hollywood (aunque se ha salido varias veces de ese encierro) que más aprecio. Aunque no destaque por una belleza estándar o glamorosa, es de las más expresivas y versátiles figuras femeninas de la actuación del cine estadounidense desde los años 90. Decidí dedicarle un pequeño post como admirador.
I learned that today, June 23, is the birth date of Frances McDormand, one of the Hollywood film actresses (though she has broken out of that confinement several times) that I hold most dear. While she may not stand out for standard or glamorous beauty, she is among the most expressive and versatile female acting figures in American cinema since the 1990s. I decided to dedicate a small post to her as a fan.

Si bien había actuado en varios filmes, se me hizo visible con Fargo, de 1996, dirigida por los hermanos Cohen: Ethan y Joel Cohen, quien es su esposo, quienes tienen otras realizaciones donde Frances McDormand ha sido nuevamente protagonista, como El hombre que nunca estuvo ahí (2001) y Quémese después de leerse (2008). Con Fargo recibió su primer Premio Óscar a la mejor actriz interpretando el papel de una jefa de policía en un caso criminal.
Although she had acted in several films, she became visible to me with Fargo, from 1996, directed by the Cohen brothers: Ethan and Joel Cohen, who is her husband, with other productions where Frances McDormand has again been the protagonist, such as The Man Who Was Never There (2001) and Burn After Reading (2008). With Fargo she received her first Oscar Award for best actress playing the role of a police chief in a criminal case.
He visto varios de los filmes en los que participa, pero quisiera centrarme solo en los dos últimos protagonizados por ella que he podido apreciar con atención. Me refiero a Tres anuncios en las afueras (Three billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri) y Nomadland.
El primero, un filme de 2017, del cineasta británico Martin McDonagh, realizador de esa extraordinaria obra titulada en español Almas en pena de Inisherin (The Banshees of Inisherin), de 2022. En Tres anuncios (o vallas) se narra la dura y sostenida lucha de una madre contra la impunidad e indiferencia de los órganos judiciales frente a la violación y asesinato de su hija (como dicen, cualquier relaión con nuestra realidad, es mera coinicidencia). Con una fuerza actoral, que va de la zozobra a la violencia, Frances McDormand logra transmitirnos, en la interpretación de su personaje, ese estado de impotencia y desafuero que puede vivir una madre ante una situación tan dramática. Fue galardonada entonces, entre otros premios, con su segundo Óscar a la mejor actriz.

I have seen several of her films, but I would like to focus only on the last two starring her that I have been able to watch closely. I'm referring to Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) and Nomadland.
The former, a 2017 film by British filmmaker Martin McDonagh, the maker of that extraordinary film titled in Spanish Almas en pena de Inisherin (The Banshees of Inisherin), from 2022. In Tres anuncios (or billboards) the hard and sustained struggle of a mother against the impunity and indifference of the judicial bodies in the face of the rape and murder of her daughter is narrated. With an acting strength that ranges from anxiety to violence, Frances McDormand manages to convey the state of helplessness and defiance that a mother can experience in such a dramatic situation. She was awarded, among other prizes, her second Oscar for Best Actress.
De los filmes que he podido apreciar de ella hasta ahora (en mi país, Venezuela, y en mis circunstancias económicas personales) el último es Nomadland, que podría traducirse como “Nómadas de la tierra”, aunque se difundió con su título en inglés, hasta donde sé. Realizado en 2020 por la cineasta china Chloé Zhao, y producido por la propia Frances McDormand, recibió varios premios, entre ellos el Óscar a la mejor actriz.
Se trata de un filme de una belleza trágica y lírica que me conmovió, emoción que ha permanecido aun volviendo a verlo. A partir de él escribí un post el año pasado, un ejercicio poético que pueden ver (aquí). En Nomadland la actuación de Frances McDormand nos da el temple del filme que, en mi interpretación, estaría en la conjugación del duelo, la nostalgia y el desapego, en el viaje que es la vida, el cual pareciera acercarse a un estado semejante al que los antiguos llamaron ataraxia.

Of the films I have been able to appreciate of hers so far (in my country, Venezuela, and in my personal economic circumstances) the latest is *Nomadland, which could be translated as "Nomads of the Earth", although it was disseminated with its English title, as far as I know. Made in 2020 by Chinese filmmaker Chloé Zhao, and produced by Frances McDormand herself, it received several awards, including the Oscar for Best Actress.
It is a film of a tragic and lyrical beauty that moved me, an emotion that has remained even after re-watching it. From it I wrote a post last year, a poetic exercise that you can see here). In Nomadland Frances McDormand's performance gives us the temper of the film which, in my interpretation, would be in the conjugation of mourning, nostalgia and detachment, in the journey that is life, which seems to approach a state similar to what the ancients called ataraxia.
