Trap(2024) || If Only...
Okay, I finally get to talk about this movie. I’ve read a lot of reviews and upon the insistence of my best friend, I decided to watch it and see for myself. Get the gist of this Trap film so I can properly ascertain some facts for myself. When I went to download it, I saw it being listed as a horror/thriller genre. This kind of put me off till I confirmed that it wasn’t, in fact, horror but something I could watch quite easily. Kind of set me off a bit that it’s not in fact horror but categorized as horror but I guess I only had to let go and be entrapped by this film.
Trap (2024)
This movie was released on the 2nd of August, 2024. It was directed by M. Night Shyamalan and features stars like Josh Hartnett, Kid Cudi, Saleka and a host of others. It’s a thriller genre film production and lasts for about an hour and forty-five minutes.
So, it’s basically about a man named Cooper Abott who takes his teenage daughter, Riley to a concert by her favourite artist but then he soon begins to realize that something else is going on at the concert. There are several law enforcement agents stationed at every point of the concert and the entire atmosphere begins to take on a rather sinister vibe. There are several rather shocking revelations that make both the concert and the man to be more than what meets the eye.
My Review and Rating
There may be a few spoilers along the way so if you haven’t seen the film yet and have plans to, it’s okay to skip this review Okay, so this movie was not horrible. Not as horrible as I expected, at least. I’d like to commend the general storyline. It was not bad at all. And more than that, it offered a fresh concept into a Hollywood that I’d deemed rather hopeless when it comes to fresh takes. So, this film with its brilliant storyline and content had a lot of potential if it wasn’t executed so poorly.
And so I started to get why everyone kept saying that the movie was unrealistic. With a killer that is actually wanted by the FBI, Cooper was able to get away with a lot of stuff. He’s not an unsuspecting young male, for instance, he’s at least 6’3, why didn’t they pick at it? The Concert staff that was literally trained and warned beforehand gave him confidential information after barely three seconds of conversation. And to crown it all, he wasn’t spotted when he walked in on a super secret security meeting on the guise of coffee. Even shopping malls have more security sensitivity than that.
There are a host of other thighs that didn’t do you for me. Like the FBI not shooting a wanted criminal after escaping their watch several times and even gouging out the eyes of a police officer. How he was tasered but was still able to walk freely. How a man who’s supposed to be so menacing is left unattended at the back of the truck. What else, all the discrepancies that painted him as some super human that could just disappear at will from buildings when everyone was looking for him and could even switch with Raven’s trusted driver. It all seemed too much for me.
Criticising this movie doesn’t feel right because it’s basically going to be a tearing down of the entire production. Hardly any good points at all in my book. And that seems like much of a waste for me. Again, it’s not entirely bad. Just not a movie I would recommend anyone to watch. Maybe the good parts would be the concert itself. I liked one or two songs there but after then, it kind of seemed repetitive in terms of rhythm and style.
So yeah, maybe a decent 5.5/10 is the best I can give or maybe a 6, just because the storyline in itself was stellar. There is hope for Hollywood yet if there is an emergence of unique storylines like this. Maybe just not directed by M. Night Shyamalan.
