Hello everyone, dear fans of movies and good stories... I hope you are feeling great today. This time I want to talk to you about a very interesting movie that I fell in love with completely and became one of the movies that I have liked the most and that has deserved the most awards... today I will talk to you about the movie Past Lives. This story navigates between the depths of love, nostalgia, and the different difficult decisions that end up shaping each of our lives. Watching it, I think anyone can identify with many things, mainly if you have had different love relationships in your life... I think it gives us valuable lessons and its emotional moments can make us cry. The plot follows Nora and Hae Sung, two childhood friends in South Korea who lose contact when Nora moves to Canada... many years later they reconnect through Facebook and start to rebuild their relationship....

From the beginning, the film sets a realistic tone that differs greatly from the typical romantic comedies that many of us will be used to, here in this story there are no formulas or easy solutions, instead we are shown an honest look at how different people's lives can intertwine and separate due to different circumstances or decisions we make. One of the things that struck me the most about this film is how it tackles the idea of What if... in a very profound way...

Every interaction between Nora and Hae Sung is loaded with emotions that are not explicitly.. even though they are both at different points in their lives. It's impossible not to feel genuine sadness as you watch the relationship they begin to develop together, as although there is clear affection, life has taken them down different paths.. it's something that really happens, not always does love or friendship lead to a perfect culmination.. sometimes they simply exist, but fail to fit in a way that is right for the present.

En esta ocasión les quiero hablar de una película muy interesante que me enamoró por completo y se convirtió en una de las películas que más me han gustado y que más premios ha merecido.. hoy les hablaré de la película Past Lives. Esta historia navega entre las profundidades del amor, la nostalgia, y las diferentes decisiones difíciles que acaban moldeando cada una de nuestras vidas. Al verla, creo que cualquier persona puede identificarse con muchas cosas, principalmente si ha tenido diferentes relaciones amorosas en su vida.. creo que nos da valiosas lecciones y sus momentos emotivos nos pueden hacer llorar. La trama sigue a Nora y a Hae Sung, dos amigos de la infancia en Corea del Sur que pierden contacto cuando Nora se muda a Canadá.. muchos años después se reconectan a través de Facebook y empiezan a reconstruir su relación..

Desde el inicio, la película establece un tono realista que difiere enormemente de las típicas comedias románticas a las que muchos de nosotros estaremos acostumbrados, aquí en esta historia no hay fórmulas ni soluciones fáciles, sino que nos muestran una mirada honesta a cómo las vidas de diferentes personas se pueden entrelazar y separar por distintas circunstancias o decisiones que tomamos. Una de las cosas que más me impactó en esta película es cómo aborda la idea del ¿Qué hubiera pasado si…? de manera muy profunda..

Cada interacción entre Nora y Hae Sung está cargada de emociones que no son explícitamente.. aunque ambos estén en diferentes momentos de sus vidas. Es imposible no sentir una tristeza genuina mientras observas la relación que empiezan a desarrollar juntos, ya que aunque hay un claro afecto, la vida los ha llevado por caminos diferentes.. es algo que pasa realmente, no siempre el amor o la amistad llevan a una culminación perfecta.. a veces simplemente existen, pero no logran encajar de una manera correcta en el presente.

The director does a fantastic job of maintaining the tone of the film, making it a delicate yet thoughtful story...it's very interesting that this film is Celine Song's feature directorial debut. It feels like a very mature piece of work...you can tell that much of what she shows on screen is something that she herself has surely experienced, as the level of detail in exploring the emotions of her characters is really impressive. Both protagonists are not characters who simply know what they have to do, they are deeply thoughtful people who are dealing with a lot of nostalgia...with the need to try to figure out what decision is right and what will be best for their lives, it is that melancholy in the scenes that I liked the most in this film.

I was surprised how the reconnections through some social networks are dealt with, in this case Facebook... it doesn't feel like this use of social networks was something forced, but more like a realistic representation of how people of some generations get separated and somehow end up reuniting and wanting to reconnect. Surely some of us have had some similar experience, the feeling of meeting someone from the past online and somehow wanting to hear about their life again, which gives this film a touch of modern authenticity that I feel it represents very well.. the conversations through all the video calls, the long pauses while they both process what they really feel, all that is very well told making them easy to connect with..

La directora hace un trabajo fantástico manteniendo el tono de la película, volviéndola una historia delicada y al mismo tiempo reflexiva.. es muy interesante que esta película sea el debut como directora de cine de Celine Song. Se siente como una obra muy madura.. se nota que mucho de lo que muestra en pantalla es algo que ella misma seguramente ha vivido, ya que el nivel de detalle en la exploración de las emociones de sus personajes es realmente impresionante. Ambos protagonistas no son personajes que simplemente saben lo que tienen que hacer, son personas profundamente pensativas que están lidiando con mucha nostalgia.. con la necesidad de intentar saber cuál decisión es la correcta y cuál será la mejor para sus vidas, es esa melancolía en las escenas lo que más me gustó en esta película.

Me sorprendió cómo se tratan las reconexiones a través de algunas redes sociales, en este caso Facebook.. no se siente como que esta utilización de las redes sociales fuera algo forzado, sino más bien como una representación realista de cómo las personas de algunas generaciones se separan y de alguna manera terminan reencontrándose y queriendo reconectar. Seguramente algunos de nosotros hemos tenido alguna experiencia similar, el sentimiento de encontrarnos con alguien del pasado en línea y de alguna manera querer saber de su vida otra vez, lo que le da a esta película un toque de autenticidad moderna que siento que representa muy bien.. las conversaciones a través de todas las videollamadas, las largas pausas mientras ambos procesan lo que realmente sienten, todo eso está muy bien relatado haciendo que sea fácil conectar con ellos..

The performances are, for me, one of the biggest points of this film. Greta Lee, as Nora, is wonderful... she manages to capture both the strength of a woman who has taken full control of her life and career, and also manages to convey all that vulnerability of someone who still has unresolved feelings for someone. On the other hand, Teo Yoo as Hae sung is also formidable, playing a man who is full of nostalgia, but who faces the same realities as Nora, he has to accept that life goes on and things don't always turn out the way you expect them to.... Together, they create a chemistry that is almost tangible, as if they both know that any moment beyond friendship could completely crumble their current worlds.

One aspect that I found very original was the way Hae Sung decided not to make any of the characters in this movie look like villains, often in this kind of stories the third character that joins this conflict is usually portrayed as an ugly obstacle or a barrier to the main couple's happiness... and here that is not the case. All the characters are treated with a lot of empathy and humanity, which makes the decisions made can seem much more mature, no one here is the villain of the story, they are just normal, real people trying to do the best they can with what they have.

The movie made me think a lot about all the ideas of what fate means and how it can really affect each of our lives. It's certainly interesting the Korean belief that they transcend into past lives and everything to do with souls reconnecting over time...I found it very unique. It's not something that is handled literally, but I think it's good to see that not all things need to be tied to logic.... Just everyone lives their lives and hopes to have happiness in the paths they choose to travel.

Las actuaciones son, para mí, uno de los puntos más enormes que tiene esta película. Greta Lee, como Nora, es maravillosa.. logra capturar tanto la fortaleza de una mujer que ha tomado el total control de su vida y su carrera, como también logra transmitir toda esa vulnerabilidad de alguien que aún guarda sentimientos no resueltos por alguien. Por otro lado, Teo Yoo como Hae sung también es formidable, interpretando a un hombre que está lleno de nostalgia, pero que se enfrenta a las mismas realidades que Nora, tiene que aceptar que la vida sigue y que no siempre resultan las cosas de la manera que uno espera.. Juntos, crean una química que es casi tangible, como si ambos supieran que cualquier momento más allá de la amistad podría desmoronar completamente sus mundos actuales.

Un aspecto que me pareció muy original fue la manera en la que Hae Sung decidió no hacer ver como villanos a ninguno de los personajes que hay en esta película, a menudo en este tipo de historias el tercer personaje que se une a este conflicto suele ser representado como un feo obstáculo o una barrera para la felicidad de la pareja principal.. y aquí eso no es el caso. Todos los personajes son tratados con mucha empatía y humanidad, lo que hace que las decisiones que se tomen puedan parecer mucho más maduras, nadie aquí es el villano de la historia, simplemente son personas normales y reales tratando de hacer lo mejor que pueden con lo que tienen.

La película me hizo pensar mucho en todas las ideas de lo que significa el destino y cómo realmente puede afectar cada una de nuestras vidas. Sin duda es interesante la creencia coreana que trascienden en las vidas pasadas y todo lo relacionado a las almas que se reconectan a lo largo del tiempo.. me pareció muy único. No es algo que se maneje de manera literal, pero creo que es bueno ver que no todas las cosas tienen por qué ser atadas a la lógica.. Simplemente cada quien vive su vida y espera tener felicidad en los caminos que decidan recorrer.

Visually, this film is beautiful. The scenes in New York and Korea are contrasting...but both places are depicted in a way that brings out so much of the beauty and melancholy of the lives the characters lead in these precise locations. The long takes allow one to reflect and think about the moments they are watching, which is perfect for a film like this.... However, unfortunately not everything seems perfect to me, although I deeply enjoyed this story, in some moments I felt that the time jumps broke my connection with the characters a little bit. I would have liked to see more development in the transitions between these stages of their lives, although I understand that this is a necessary and useful resource to show the passage of time... it left me in some moments with the feeling that things felt rushed, but it's not something too important.

I think Past Lives is a film that, while it may not move you in an incredible way, can definitely leave you thinking a lot.. it's a much more mature exploration of love, decisions and missed opportunities, with brilliant performances and beautiful direction. It's not a movie you'll watch quickly, but it's definitely worth it and I would recommend it to anyone looking to fall in love with a realistic and deep story. I give it a solid 9.5/10. Visualmente, esta película es hermosa. Las escenas en Nueva York y Corea son contrastantes.. pero ambos lugares son representados de una manera que resalta mucho la belleza y la melancolía de las vidas que llevan los personajes en estos precisos lugares. Las tomas largas permiten que uno reflexione y piense en los momentos que está viendo, lo cual es perfecto para una película como esta.. Sin embargo, lastimosamente no todo me parece perfecto, aunque disfruté profundamente de esta historia, en algunos momentos sentí que los saltos temporales rompían un poco mi conexión con los personajes.. me hubiera gustado ver más desarrollo en las transiciones entre estas etapas de sus vidas, aunque entiendo que este es un recurso necesario y útil para mostrar el paso del tiempo.. me dejó en algunos momentos con la sensación de que las cosas se sintieron apresuradas, pero no es algo demasiado importante.

Creo que Past Lives es una película que, aunque no te emocione de una manera increíble, definitivamente puede dejarte pensando mucho.. es una exploración mucho más madura del amor, las decisiones y las oportunidades perdidas, con actuaciones brillantes y una dirección hermosa. No es una película que se vea rápidamente, pero definitivamente vale la pena y se la recomendaría a todos aquellos que busquen enamorarse de una historia realista y profunda.
