The Fantastical ~ Tale of the Nine-Tailed Fox - Review

The fantasy series The Tale of the Nine-Tailed brings to life a famous creature from old Korean fables known as the gumiho – a magical fox spirit with nine swishing tails. Blending history and imagination, this drama shares funny, scary and bittersweet stories about a gumiho caught between human and spirit worlds.

We first meet the gumiho guardian Lee Yeon. He protects a beautiful mountain but likes playfully tricking humans in the nearby city, showing off supernatural powers. But this powerful gumiho hides heartbreaking secrets too.

Over 1000 years ago, Lee Yeon fell deeply in love with a kind human lady when he took man shape in her village. But afraid of revealing his true spiritual form, lies and mistrust created a tragedy that ended with the lady dying cursing Lee Yeon’s name! He still mourns her after all these centuries.

When Lee Yeon meets TV director Nam Ji-Ah, surprises begin unfolding. Strange ghosts attack her trying to steal an old hairpin that holds history secrets. Brave Lee Yeon uses his special gumiho abilities like magic charms and lightning swords to fight them off! But more shock comes when Lee Yeon realizes this Ji-Ah woman carries the soul of his past sweetheart reborn into the modern world!

As Ji-Ah teams up with the conflicted gumiho detective on ghost-hunting adventures, she starts having odd dreams and uncovering clues about her soul’s previous life as a Joseon kingdom noble lady. Could she solve the ancient mystery of what broke a gumiho’s heart?

Fresh action scenes feature Lee Yeon battling scary monsters while sweet moments have him making shy romance with Ji-Ah, trying not to repeat past mistakes. Supporting characters like Ji-Ah’s funny friend and a kind gumiho woman guide the couple too. But dangers also brew, as failing health shows Lee Yeon paying a high price for using special powers.

Big questions follow two soulmates reconnecting over lives: Should an immortal spirit and human expect a future? Can old betrayals transform into trust as truth comes out? The story keeps us wondering.

While some scenes have lengthy historic drama, flat villains or jumbled plots, at the heart lives an imaginative gumiho tale teaching compassion and redemption. The show succeeds most when using fantasy to explore real humanity.

We see how present and past souls both desire love yet fear its loss – whether human or magical creature. Exploring the pain of perceived betrayal from old stories allows for reconciliation and wisdom during future trials.

In wrapping up, The Tale of the Nine-Tailed beautifully mixes adventure, emotional moments and fun humor to deliver life lessons around mercy and fixing broken connections. A few confusing plot points and slow sections take away from perfection. But the forgiveness themes shine brighter than any fancy effects ever could. Hopefully Lee Yeon and Ji Ah's magical journey shows that fantasy worlds can powerfully blend with human relationships. Kudos to the talented crew that clearly poured heart into this tale. If even spirits in stories can learn from past hurts to plant seeds of wisdom, maybe viewers can too. Here's hoping show gems like these help rewrite generational curses into blessings

The story of Lee Yeon and Ji Ah carries an inspiring message about reconciliation. Betrayals and lies can break trust. But the truth allows people to heal relationships, even over hundreds of years.

Lee Yeon made mistakes in the past by hiding his true spiritual form from his human lover. His secrecy and her anger created a tragedy that neither recovered from for centuries. This caused great pain for both their souls.

When their souls reconnect in modern times, Lee Yeon fears repeating the same betrayal. But now he bravely opens his heart. Ji Ah responds with understanding instead of anger. This gives their love a second chance.

The gumiho tale shows how present generations can rewrite sad endings left by ancestors. Ji Ah’s compassion toward Lee Yeon starts healing the deep wounds from the past. She fixes the broken connection by building trust.

All people can learn from this story. When we reconcile injuries from yesterday, it plants good seeds for tomorrow. Even fantasy stories like a gumiho’s can teach that lesson.

The writers did well making an imaginative world that reflects real human nature. The problems and solutions in the spirit realm mirror those in real life. This makes the emotional journey feel true.

While perfect stories are rare, The Tale of the Nine-Tailed uses fantasy in a meaningful way. It explores how mercy and sacrifice heal brokenness over time. The themes of mending deep relational cuts or betrayal may outlast any flashy special effects.

Viewers who take this journey with Lee Yeon and Ji Ah may discover hope for their own attempts at reconciliation. If even magical creatures can fix trust issues through honesty and forgiveness, then maybe humans can too. By rewriting old curses into new blessings, the next generation plants seeds of wisdom.

I was fascinated with this review. Showing love and forgiveness in the midst of a major conflict that is the difference between humans and mythical or divine beings, gives it a bonus that makes me curious, as always those who are different from the common, usually have a much more uphill road to achieve their goal.
