I have never been interested in wrestling. In my country there was a time when American wrestling was broadcasted on a famous television channel, a show from which professionals have also emerged who have later dedicated themselves to acting, being very successful. I moved away from the euphoria that others professed, everything was faked, acted, a prepared show, something that Americans love, so for me it didn't make much sense.
Mexican wrestling is somewhat unknown territory for me, the little I know is from having seen some movie or documentary some time ago, reading some article in some magazine, etc. For example, when I was a kid I liked to read a magazine where Santo, El Enmascarado de Plata, was the main character and fought against monsters and dangerous situations. He was a famous Mexican wrestler, a real star.
What really caught my attention was the use of masks by Mexican wrestlers. I know that this whole world and its rules have many fans in Mexico, I think at the same level as soccer, it is considered almost a religion, with its own customs, rules and totally rooted within the Mexican popular culture. I saw the movie Cassandro, with few expectations, since I am not a fan of this sport, but thanks to the movie, I have become interested in knowing more about everything related to Mexican wrestling and the names that have written its history.
Nunca me ha interesado la lucha libre. En mi país hubo una época en la que se emitía lucha libre americana en un famoso canal de televisión, un espectáculo del que también han salido profesionales que luego se han dedicado a la interpretación, teniendo mucho éxito. Yo me alejé de la euforia que otros profesaban, todo era fingido, actuado, un espectáculo preparado, algo que a los americanos les encanta, así que para mí no tenía mucho sentido.
La lucha libre mexicana es un territorio un tanto desconocido para mí, lo poco que sé es por haber visto alguna película o documental hace tiempo, leer algún artículo en alguna revista, etc. Por ejemplo, cuando era niño me gustaba leer una revista donde Santo, El Enmascarado de Plata, era el protagonista y luchaba contra monstruos y situaciones peligrosas. Era un famoso luchador mexicano, una auténtica estrella.
Lo que me llamó mucho la atención fue el uso de máscaras por parte de los luchadores mexicanos. Sé que todo este mundo y sus reglas tienen muchos aficionados en México, creo que al mismo nivel que el fútbol, se considera casi una religión, con sus propias costumbres, reglas y totalmente arraigado dentro de la cultura popular mexicana. Vi la película Cassandro, con pocas expectativas, ya que no soy aficionado a este deporte, pero gracias a la película, me he interesado en conocer más sobre todo lo relacionado con la lucha libre mexicana y los nombres que han escrito su historia.
A mask. To transform us into someone else or hide what it really is. In this biopic, the mask he wears in Mexican wrestling also acquires another meaning. Saúl Armendáriz puts on a mask to transform himself into El Topo, but at the same time he keeps his own essence, his true self, hidden from a macho society and sports environment. Although he seems free, he actually lives in an inner prison, unable to show himself in all his splendor, to be accepted and failed.
The face, the liberation. To take off the mask, to show himself to the world. To change one's mind, to dare to break the established norms without fear. Breaking down the bars of a self-imposed cage will turn Saul, the mole, into Cassandro, unafraid to be free and get the recognition he deserves. Although not everything will be easy, the road to the top is full of obstacles and pain.
The interesting thing about Cassando is the respectful and sincere portrayal of the life of this exotic fighter. This type of wrestler was part of the show. Wrestlers in flamboyant and effeminate attire, clearly with homosexual tendencies, who served as a kind of buffoon in the show. They didn't win the fights, the glory went only to the masked wrestlers, strong, big, manly and crowd pleasing. Cassandro's merit is to have made his way with everything against him, winning the affection of the public.
Una máscara. Para transformarnos en otra persona u ocultar lo que realmente es. En este biopic, la máscara que usa en la lucha libre mexicana adquiere también otro significado. Saúl Armendáriz se pone una máscara para transformarse en El Topo, pero al mismo tiempo mantiene oculta su propia esencia, su verdadero yo, ante una sociedad y un entorno deportivo machistas. Aunque parece libre, en realidad vive en una cárcel interior, incapaz de mostrarse en todo su esplendor, de ser aceptado y fracasado.
La cara, la liberación. Quitarse la máscara, mostrarse al mundo. Cambiar de opinión, atreverse a romper las normas establecidas sin miedo. Derribar los barrotes de una jaula autoimpuesta convertirá a Saúl, el topo, en Cassandro, sin miedo a ser libre y obtener el reconocimiento que merece. Aunque no todo será fácil, el camino hacia la cima está lleno de obstáculos y dolor.
Lo interesante de Cassando es el retrato respetuoso y sincero de la vida de este exótico luchador. Este tipo de luchador formaba parte del espectáculo. Luchadores con atuendos extravagantes y afeminados, claramente con tendencias homosexuales, que servían como una especie de bufones en el espectáculo. No ganaban los combates, la gloria sólo era para los luchadores enmascarados, fuertes, grandes, varoniles y agradables al público. El mérito de Cassandro es haberse abierto camino con todo en contra, ganándose el cariño del público.

That is why some lead a double life, with wife and children, adapting to the social status quo, to lead a life that, for the majority would be normal, sacrificing their happiness, an eternal mask.
The mother-child relationship. The immense love of a mother and her son, give us the most emotional moments of the film. The importance of that person who is willing to take care of us with her life. The person who is also the reason for Cassandro's life. Pushing him forward and, at the same time, inspiring him. Cassandro reaches his goals having the same strength and perseverance as his mother. They both walk a path full of thorns, each one with his sorrows, his sufferings. Who said that life is easy?
The relationship with an irresponsible father, who does not accept the truth, victim of his own absurd machismo. The attempt to fix the mistakes of the past, which should bring peace for one of the characters and eternal contempt for the other. Something very common to see, it has not only happened to Cassandro. It is also the story of many other people. Labeled by society, by friends, by relatives.
Something that makes this film remarkable is Gal García Bernal's performance. Completely respecting the character, he uses his charisma and talent to imbue the screen with the magic that radiates from the real Cassandro. His failures, his happy moments, his pain and his successes. Excellent acting work by this Mexican actor who became an international star decades ago.
Roger Ross Willimas' direction is correct. It does not manage to be a rounded film, at a narrative level I feel it lacks much more depth, especially in the parts of the story that should be darker. That's why I recommend you also take a look at the documentary called Cassandro The Exotic directed by Marie Losier, so you will have a broader view on the life of this fighter.

Uno de los temas más interesantes de esta historia es la homosexualidad en un entorno deportivo y sociedad extremadamente machistas. Donde incluso la vida de las personas que se sienten atraídas por personas de su mismo sexo corre peligro y también determina el éxito o fracaso de una carrera. Por eso algunos llevan una doble vida, con mujer e hijos, adaptándose al statu quo social, para llevar una vida que, para la mayoría sería normal, sacrificando su felicidad, una máscara eterna.
La relación maternofilial. El inmenso amor de una madre y su hijo, nos regalan los momentos más emotivos de la película. La importancia de esa persona que está dispuesta a cuidarnos con su vida. La persona que es también la razón de la vida de Cassandro. Empujándole hacia adelante y, al mismo tiempo, inspirándole. Cassandro alcanza sus metas teniendo la misma fuerza y perseverancia que su madre. Ambos recorren un camino lleno de espinas, cada uno con sus penas, sus sufrimientos. ¿Quién dijo que la vida es fácil?
La relación con un padre irresponsable, que no acepta la verdad, víctima de su propio machismo absurdo. El intento de arreglar los errores del pasado, que debería traer la paz para uno de los personajes y el desprecio eterno para el otro. Algo muy común de ver, no sólo le ha ocurrido a Cassandro. Es también la historia de muchas otras personas. Etiquetados por la sociedad, por los amigos, por los familiares.
Algo que hace notable a esta película es la actuación de Gal García Bernal. Respetando completamente al personaje, utiliza su carisma y talento para impregnar la pantalla de la magia que irradia el verdadero Cassandro. Sus fracasos, sus momentos felices, su dolor y sus éxitos. Excelente trabajo interpretativo de este actor mexicano que hace décadas se convirtió en una estrella internacional.
La dirección de Roger Ross Willimas es correcta. No consigue ser una película redonda, a nivel narrativo siento que le falta mucha más profundidad, sobre todo en las partes de la historia que deberían ser más oscuras. Por eso te recomiendo que también le eches un vistazo al documental llamado Cassandro The Exotic dirigido por Marie Losier, así tendrás una visión más amplia sobre la vida de este luchador.

No puedo creer que no te guste "The Undertaker" ni "Yokozuna" esas luchas libres de antaño son un clásico jaja.
En cuanto a esta ví el póster ahora y me parecía algo de ballet así que no preste atención, pero ahora veo que el tipo es un luchador.
El enterrador jajaja lo veía por RCTV, pero no me apasionaba, no me emocionaba como a otros espectadores.
No conocía nada de Cassandro, lo descubrí por este film y me vi también el documental. Un biopic correcto. La actuación de Gael García , excelente

realidades sociales que aún se mantienen arraigadas y otras nuevas, más la coexistencia de ambas... sabes? la vida no es fácil pero es hermosa, no lo olvides.
El personaje tuvo una visión de la vida que quería y lucho por ello. Es un mensaje muy bueno, además de la emotividad de la relación madre hijo.

Desconocía por completo a este personaje, fue aun agradable film. noes el mejor biopic, pero Gal García Bernal levanta con su actuación toda la película.
Si, la vida es bella.. pero hay momentos que esa belleza se aleja y vemos el otro lado, bastante feo.

Ame esta película, justo acabo de publicar la reseña, la vi y aún secándome las lágrimas comencé a escribirla. De lucha libre sé nada, y me interesa mucho menos, pero meten a un personaje queer o mujer en lo que sea, y ahí estaré viéndolo. Pinche película hermosa. Mira, te comiste la e en Gael cuando lo mencionas en el penúltimo párrafo, y sí, su actuación es magnífica, lo amé.
