(ESP-ENG) The Zone of Interest - Movie Review!

The Oscars are approaching and as always there are films that have not yet been seen but little by little we are trying to catch up with that list, yesterday we started with The Zone Of Interest, a film that is having many divided opinions but definitely does not leave anyone indifferent. A lot has been said about the second world war, about the holocaust too but I think not in the way it is done with this film by Jonathan Glazer, personally I think that the way everything was captured and the way they show it is genius, in a few words what they do is to show you the horror and terror without having the need to show it to you and how despite that context there was a dark normalization of the whole situation.

This bizarre story is about Rudolf Höss who at the time was the commandant in charge of one of the largest and most nefarious concentration camps of those times, we are talking about Auschwitz. The interesting thing about this film is that it is not about the Jewish suffering and does not put them as the protagonists, here the main faces are others. Right next to the camp, this Nazi had his house where he lived with his entire family, wife and children, as well as all the service personnel. Despite knowing who this man was, here he is seen as an exemplary father and a concerned and attentive husband, something that is difficult to assimilate, being a good person and a Nazi is not compatible, that does not exist.

The thing is that both the wife, Hedwig, and Hoss himself are determined to build an ideal family, an environment as beautiful and healthy as possible for their children being a wall away from the camp, just meters away from the ovens and chimneys of that place. The film is basically the day to day life of this family, how they live, how they enjoy, how they are as if nothing, how they plan parties while you can hear the screams, gunshots, moans and see the smoke from the ovens. It is as many have said, it is the trivialization of evil, it is the degree of normalization that these people had before the suffering of others.

I can understand why many people don't like this film, for them it is slow and inconsequential, but for me, who found it a genius, it is one of the most different views of this tragedy that has been shown in cinema. I had never seen the holocaust from the conventional German point of view, that is to say, something a little different from the political and military look. I have always been passionate about everything that has to do with the Second World War, history must be known, from there to be able to see this film that revolves around something we all know but from another point of view and perception is something I did not expect.

There are many scenes that are uncomfortable and full of a terror "that is not seen" but that you perceive because you hear it or because you simply know it is there even though the camera does not show it to you. There are a couple of scenes that honestly give you goosebumps, all elaborated with certain aesthetics within what is photography, which is extraordinary, and the sound with which they sought to fill them. We must remember that this film is from A24, a very particular production company/studio that is characterized by cinematically perfect films and a very unique aesthetic. But as I said, these scenes are heavy and powerful; I don't want to make spoilers but for example the ending of this film is overwhelming, many will see it simple but personally I found it lapidary.

Don't expect violence, blood or a war movie, it's not, it's far from it. It is a sample of the horror that lies behind the tranquility with which it is assumed that war crimes are being committed and yet they see it as something necessary and that is perfectly fine in the eyes of all. Because beware, this is not only seen in conversations of the high command, among the wives themselves anti-Semitism is very noticeable, drinking coffee and talking about the most banal things can become equal or worse than those who controlled the strings. The protagonists were quite good, given the characters and the style of the film, it is not for them to stand out in interpretation, the weight of the film does not pass through there.

I give this movie a 9/10. I really liked it a lot, it's very intelligent the way they approach everything, the photography, the music and sound, the shots, the simplicity of the film in general. It's definitely not going to win the Oscar because in the media it doesn't carry strength or life but at least it's nominated and that's already an advance. It lasts a little over an hour and a half.
