(ESP-ENG) The Last Voyage of the Demeter - A Dracula Story!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
Today we are going to talk about Dracula, that creature that was created by Bram Stoker in the late 1800s and of which there have been endless adaptations and productions. It turns out that the novel written by the Irishman has several chapters so today's movie will focus on number 7, on what happened in the depths of the Mediterranean Sea aboard the Demeter, a ship whose crew was annihilated by our vampire friend. I know that many know it but I also know that others do not, Dracula really existed? - And the answer is no, but at the same time yes, because Stoker was based on Vlad Tepes, the Impaler, a ruler of Romania who exercised his power under terror and fear.
We are used to see quite friendly versions of Dracula throughout time whether in movies, series or anime, versions mostly given by his human form but this time that will change because we will see him as he is, as a dark and sinister creature that devours every living being with the sole purpose of being able to live. I really didn't know about the existence of this film until I came across it, personally I am a fan of Dracula's story and everything that surrounds him, so I instantly found it very interesting to see this movie. Was it what I expected? - I would say yes. But well, let's go then and talk a little bit about this little part of the history of this famous vampire.
As you understand this story is based on the great ship Demeter, one that sailed the seas transporting cargo from one country to another. This was in an area of Romania and had to move some orders to London, among those orders there were some wooden boxes without any kind of identification, only had a kind of dragon as a shield. As what mattered was the money, the crew did not question anything and embarked everything without knowing the destination that awaited them. The voyage was several days long, so that crossing in the middle of the ocean would theoretically be a piece of cake for those experienced sailors, the thing is that it was not so because soon, when night fell, strange events began to occur in the depths of the Demeter.
During the almost 2 or 3 weeks that the trip lasted, the men of the Demeter had to face a creature of which they knew nothing without there being room for doubt and mistrust, I say this because there were changes in the crew at the last minute. Of course, fear gripped everyone, the sailors were very superstitious people, they had very marked rules and habits and the moment something was not in place that could be synonymous with disaster and calamity. And indeed, it was. In general terms, the first thing I can say is that the film is good, it is everything you expect, there are no surprises because you start watching it knowing what is going to happen, and you watch it without any problems, it fulfills the premise of entertaining.
It is very obvious that this is a horror film and that's why we have to qualify it as such. I have to say that I found it raw and direct because we see things that probably in other films we would not see, I can not say much but there are a couple of things that may surprise you in the sense of how certain characters die and how they show certain characters. This is part of the horror, it's not just the scares, it's the whole aura around it, how ruthless Dracula is and even the gloomy atmosphere of the ship helps a lot to intensify the experience. It is not a scary movie, at least it was not my case, but there is a tension because there is a threat on the ship that can not be escaped and that gives suspense to the day to day even though we know at all times what it is.
Another element is the gore, there is not much blood in the scenes but there is enough for us to understand the nature of Dracula and the intention of the film. As I said in this film we will see a Dracula very different from the one we are used to see, I think it is the purest and original version of the character and therefore he is painted as a savage being in acting but clearly with some conscience and intelligence. His only goal is to survive and for that he will have to kill everything that moves on that ship. I was surprised how well done he looked on screen, it is very easy for this to go wrong but I honestly feel that this was not the case, the CGI I think was a success, I noticed it very realistic.
To say something negative I thought it was a little long, I feel that they made it longer than it should have been, knowing how everything would end. The story is what it is, I already said that there is no room for plot twists, here they show you how everything happened, the expectation is to see how all the crew dies, not what is going to happen or if there is a chance to defeat Dracula. You can't say it's predictable since it's something that is written, they're just bringing it to the movies. Despite this and I repeat, it is an enjoyable film, it is very well made, the setting is incredible, being on the ship gives a sense of overwhelm and if you add to that its gloomy aspect, even better.
The characters are cool, simple but valid. We have Liam Cunningham who is the captain, David Dastmalchian, the crew chief and Corey Hawkins who is the doctor. All of them are simply at Dracula's party, they're the guests to make it all more fun, nothing more. They are not characters with whom you will have empathy or affection, maybe with a child who is out there and watch out for him, because the film is not about that, it is about a massacre that happens on a ship and the only relevant thing is that they can avoid the inevitable.
I give it a 7.5, I thought I was going to find something much worse and in the end it turned out to be a pretty decent film and perfect to watch if you are looking for a classic horror movie. It has a length of almost two hours, an hour and a half would have been perfect but well. Here's the trailer for you to take a look at.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
¡A hug to everyone, see you next time!
Saludos amigo!
