(ESP-ENG) The Burial - A very special lawyer!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
Seeing two Oscar winners acting in the same movie where both are the main characters are things that rarely happen; this is the case of The Burial, a film where we will see the best of Jamie Foxx and Tommy Lee Jones. In my case I didn't read the synopsis or anything before seeing it, but I knew that whatever the plot was, it was going to be a quality film, and look, I wasn't wrong. Lately, I've been seeing very mainstream things, things that were in constant conversation so I was looking to ride that wave of opinion but strangely I don't understand how this film, for me one of the best I've seen this year, is not being talked about.
The Burial is based on true events, it is a story that transcended in southern Missouri a few years ago that touches on contractual issues but behind its plot it touches on racism, I would say that is the central axis of everything but there are other things as well. Being a film entirely based on trials you might think it will be incredibly boring because yes, movies like this tend to be, but this one neither friends, I guarantee you it is worth every minute of the film. It's a drama that goes hand in hand with comedy injected by Foxx's performance which is unique and very particular. Without further ado, let's go ahead and talk about this great production from these two titans of cinema.
As I said this story has two great protagonists, the first is Willie Gary (Jamie Foxx) a successful lawyer, one of the most renowned in the country because in 12 years he has not lost a single case, in fact his nickname is "the giant killer" because he has won lawsuits against Disney, for example. He specializes in one area but to help Jeremiah O'Keefe (Tommy Lee Jones) he's going to have to step out of his comfort zone a bit. Jerry is a family guy, one who has a good track record in the city where he lives, he owns a few funeral homes but because of bad decisions he is about to lose everything. In such desperation he decides to sell part of his business to a group of corporations in order to pay off some debts, what Jerry doesn't know is that in the end the cure was more expensive than the disease.
Willie is a famous guy, a millionaire, with a personality that sweeps you off your feet and a very unique way of being in court. He's one of those people who doesn't accept losing, it's not in his DNA, so even though he was initially skeptical about taking the case, the level of commitment to Jerry will be total. What will we see in the film? - The whole legal path, we will know more in depth each character and the preparation and defense of a trial that will be extremely complicated to carry. The film lasts a little more than 2 hours and although it may seem boring to the point of being boring believe me it is not, it hooks you in such a way that you end up enjoying everything.
Here we have two things, a drama that is marked by the complicated situation of Jerry and his business, how difficult it is to cope with the trial and the racial background behind the accusations that come from both sides. The second thing is that undeniably and inevitably there is some comedy in the environment that comes from the way of being Willie, I'm not talking about being a clown but it is something in the personality that makes him stand out from the others and that ends up being something quite hilarious to watch. For me the real center of it all are the racial connotations, the United States is a country that was and is very marked by this scourge, in many situations of everyday life racism is lived in different ways that in the end end end up influencing things in which we least imagine.
Also of note is one of the promotional phrases of the film: "the business of death". This is interesting because I have always thought that the safest business of life is death itself, that is, everything that entails the processes after death. Dying is very expensive for all of us who remain in this plane and in this film they expose this situation to the maximum, how they take advantage of people's pain to profit to the maximum because that's what it is, everything is a business. Buying a coffin can be a real financial nightmare for a family that does not have the memories and that is part of the problem exposed here as well. The film is a mixture of unscrupulousness with the constant struggle against the fact of being of a specific skin color.
The plot is simple but it is based on something that happened, there are no twists here. What really stands out are the performances of the characters. Jamie Foxx is spectacular, the ability he has to transmit is very top, he is an actor who is contagious and makes you want to see him act, he is undoubtedly the engine of the film, the film is about him. Tommy Lee Jones, despite his age, was sober, lucid, a quiet but effective performance; he does not lose his magic, he is still a first class actor. And as for the supporting characters, two stand out: Mame Downes (Jurnee Smollett), the defense attorney and Alan Ruck (Mike Alrred), Jerry's first lawyer. Very good performances from the pair. In fact the whole cast was very good, nothing negative to say about them.
I honestly give it an 8.5/10. I was very surprised by this film, I didn't expect to like it so much, as I mentioned, it's one of the best I've seen this year. Solid performances, that's all this movie can be summed up, nothing more. It's available on Prime Video, I highly recommend it, it's worth every minute. I leave the trailer here so you can take a look at it.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
¡A hug to everyone, see you next time!
