(ESP-ENG) Sleeping Dogs - Movie Review!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
Many times it is worse to know the truth; that is a bit of the premise of this new film where Russell Crowe shows off his acting chops. The last time I saw Crowe act was in a war film where he was the spark plug to make it work, it was logical that he had to see this new production being the protagonist. The thing is that we are facing a story which is a criminal thriller and even psychological which I assure you will leave you nailed in front of the screen waiting to see what will be the next discovery or page of this plot and is that yes, this is very similar to a detective novel that as we move forward the more everything is tangled and therefore the more interesting the matter gets.
This is the story of Roy Freeman (Russell Crowe), a former police force detective who is retired. The thing about Roy is that he is suffering from Alzheimer's, he is one of those people who has notes taped up all over his house to help him remember things, even the most basic things like his own name. Living alone and apart from everything, he tries to survive as best he can. But that reality is about to change just as his phone rings with a call that will certainly change his life. It turns out that more than 10 years ago he was present in a case whose culprit is on death row waiting for his time and who just now claims he is innocent.
All this makes Roy is "forced" to uncover the case again even though it is one that is closed. The interesting thing about this, if that word fits, is that as I said Roy does not remember anything so he will have to reassemble the case almost from scratch to start the investigation again. Obviously this is something that will help him to improve his brain functions, hence his decision to go ahead. This is where it all basically starts, Freeman begins to get into some murky waters as he discovers new clues and secrets that will lead him to a world where betrayal is the main course. Soon he will also learn that it is often better not to know everything and leave things alone.
As I already mentioned, this is a film full of intrigue where in the end nothing is known for sure, so Roy can only rely on his instinct, which is still intact. It is a film that is very well put together because we are presented as chapters being the characters each one of them. This is very cool because it gives us the necessary context to know the truth of each one, to know how involved they are and that one as a viewer play and draw their own conclusions. Also because this injects a pace not so much frenetic but with enough suspense and even mystery so that the almost two hours of film does not become so long and is very enjoyable.
It's obviously not an action film, in fact there is none of that and it doesn't need it either as it focuses purely on the investigation and how Roy deals with his mental condition on a day to day basis. At times it can seem overwhelming to see how someone with Alzheimer's tries to put all the pieces together without "dying" in the attempt, that drama is interesting to watch because it gives the film one more difficulty and so it's not all so flat. I liked it because it wasn't until the last moment of the film when the whole truth is known, along the way we're being suggested with clues and facts to make us think one way until a plot twist occurs and throws off any theory we may have had.
As for the cast, it must be said that it is very good. In addition to Russell we have Karen Gillan, Marton Csokas and Tommy Flanagan. Crowe's role is top, he is one of my favorite actors for a reason, he adapts to any interpretation. Gillan is also very good, to think that she started doing the typical sitcom comedy and ended up becoming a great actress. Actually all the performances were up to par, I don't have much criticism about it. In fact, I would think that because of the style of the film I think the performances are the ones that carry the weight of the plot, hence its importance and how well they did it.
I'm going to give it an 8/10 because I really enjoyed it. The key for me was or was the ending, at one point I said to myself: "it depends on how it ends I will like it or not" and the ending, personally, I did not expect it, I thought about it but I did not see it coming. It is a thriller that I recommend to everyone. It lasts less than two hours. I leave the trailer below.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
¡A hug to everyone, see you next time!
