(ESP-ENG) Roleplay - Movie Review!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
Roleplay is the typical American movie that has a comedy hidden in there and an attempt that falls very short of action and wanting to be a thriller full of tension. This happens not so much because of the actors, well maybe a little yes, but because the story is full of meaningless and unrealistic elements that make you get lost in the already simple plot. It is a story that is too predictable, very flat, without any plot twist, there is no emotion and much less connection with the characters. This for me is vital, I have already said it here, that if I can't have empathy or hatred or contempt, depending on the case, with some characters, for me the movie is already losing.
This plot begins with Emma (Kaley Cuoco), a pretty average mom and wife who has a job, a house and a family that are not out of the ordinary. The detail is that Emma travels a lot, she is almost never at home so little by little that marital relationship is fading, life is like that, when something is neglected things like that happen. The anniversary has arrived and to liven things up a bit they decide to go out of the conventional and go into a fictional story, that is to say, to apply that of role-playing. What they don't know is that that night everything is about to get out of control, endangering that second life that Emma has had such a hard time hiding from her family.
Emma is not who she says she is, it turns out that she is a hired assassin, a hitman and she has been doing it all her life. It is logical that no one knows about it for obvious reasons but that night everything will change. From here two careers begin. The first is Emma's race to solve all this big problem as soon as possible and the second is for Dave (David Oyelowo), Emma's husband, who is desperate for answers and to find out who really is the woman he married and has two children. These two journeys will lead us to find out what is really behind everything and we will see the person who is really "pulling the strings".
Let's talk a little bit about the plot. As I already mentioned, this is a really basic one that does not leave room for assumptions, basically because you instinctively know what is going to happen. I have seen countless movies where you already know the plot because they are very common and yet they make an attempt to give us some excitement and unexpected things happen; this is not the case of this film. From minute one you already sense where things are going to go, maybe there are certain details that seek to give that effect that I was saying but it remains just that, a simple attempt without any success.
Is there comedy? - Well, understanding that the main genre is that I did notice it but it didn't make any impact on me. It is not a story where you are going to laugh out loud or one with black humor, it is the typical silly romantic comedy where everything remains in a few gestures and phrases that have not come to fulfill. The action. There are chases, a couple of melee fights but equally to the above, nothing remarkable. There is not a scene that surprised me or left me stuck on the couch, on the contrary, I got up several times to walk around the house, open the fridge and look out the balcony to see what was new. The expectation friends, the one that is so important in a film in this one did not exist.
The characters. I like Kaley, she is a good actress, both for comedy and for these roles that are a hybrid of several things. If I had to rescue something it would be her, the whole movie is on her shoulders, within the basics of the film, she doesn't do it badly, at least that's how I perceived it. She is very versatile, that's the word for her. The others, irrelevant. The husband is just another supporting character, within the story he is not, but when you see him play his role you realize that she is indeed one more. And the villain or villainess, that was a total waste. The final part of the film is a tragedy but it's because of her, Owen Carver (Connie Nielsen), lacking depth and character, it's a bit of a dream to listen to her and watch her act.
I give it a 5.5/10. See it, I'm always going to tell you that because not all tastes and opinions are the same. It's on Prime Video and it's a little over an hour and a half long. I leave the trailer here.
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
¡A hug to everyone, see you next time!
