(ESP-ENG) Paradise - A race against time!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
If there is something that Netflix has is the diversity in its content in the sense that there are many countries that have the possibility of making productions, we have seen things from South Korea, India, Brazil, Turkey, Spain, Mexico and of course Germany. The last thing I saw from this country was Dark, that series that revolutionized absolutely everything with its unique and fantastic story, now it was the turn of Paradise, a film that if it had been handled differently I think it would have been much more successful than according to Netflix it is or was. And I say according to Netflix because we already know that they are not the most transparent when it comes to publishing their numbers.
Paradise is a science fiction story that is full of scenarios that could happen in the not too distant future. How much would they want to live, if they could give someone more time to live, would they do it, would they exchange that time for money? - All these questions are developed in the film under the context that always the powerful, those who have more resources end up choosing for the less favored. A plot with a peculiar premise, not new because something like this has been seen before but that does not make it any less interesting to watch. Without further ado, let's talk about this futuristic film full of moral and existentialist doubts.
We have Max (Kostja Ullmann) who is a man working for AEON, a technology company that managed to figure out how to live "forever". The reality is that they managed to find a way to reverse aging in exchange for large sums of money. But not everything is rosy because yes, a person manages to get younger but on the other hand those years have to come from somewhere else and there will always be a victim who is going to get older. Max obviously knows this because he is in charge of making these deals happen and since in his life everything was perfect he had no problem with these practices. Everything changes when the system, the one he supported so much, showed its true intentions towards him and his family.
Something happens that this couple, Max and Elena (Marlene Tanczik), are on the verge of bankruptcy and in order to pay their debts the bank asks the wife to pay with part of her life, that is, she has to give up 40 years to be paid off. It is from here that Max opens his eyes and realizes how damaged the system and the people who manage it are, so he decides to take justice into his own hands. He will start a race against the clock so that his beloved wife can recover what she lost and continue with their lives. A film that I personally liked, it was not as predictable as I expected and at least it kept me expectant all the time.
One of the most remarkable things about the film is that it touches on aspects of how we are as a civilization, how cruel and cold we can be just to think about personal interest, the inequality that will always exist as long as there is someone with more power and money than the other, everything you are capable of doing in the name of that power and money and how those actions have repercussions on a moral level, consequences that will define your integrity as a human being. I didn't think it would be so "deep" in those aspects but yes, it is something that I think was the real intention of the creators and in my opinion they manage to hit the nail on the head.
In addition to this we must also say that within the plot there is a kind of psychological thriller that goes hand in hand with a suspense and action that makes the film does not sink in the first aspect that we talked about, that in the end does not become something dense to see. I think what stands out the most is the action, it is what we see most in the form of chases, confrontations, shootings, explosions, all very done and simple, nothing extraordinary or too forced. There is always a tension in the atmosphere because there is always an urgency, a need to escape, to do things right and this generates conflicts between the couple and internally, many questions that in the end will mark a bit the fate of all involved.
What didn't I like? - A little bit the script. I don't know if it was just me but I seemed to see many inconsistencies in the way certain characters acted, at a certain moment they had a mentality and five minutes later they changed it completely, I guess this is a product of those conflicts I told you about and the ability to change their minds and think as things happen but there were moments where that duality in acting generated noise and discomfort, as if they didn't know very well what they really wanted. Those "battles" made things not so predictable, I also said it, which was cool, it made the ending attractive and more digestible.
As for the characters I honestly don't have much to say. I always say that I like to have a connection with them, to be able to have the ability to empathize but in this case it didn't happen. They weren't badly acted, far from it, but they were very average for me. In the end and as they say out there "the tongue is the body's punishment" and I think that saying applies very well to the fate of all the characters, that or just karma, I don't know. I think after all you don't really know who are the good guys and bad guys, I guess that's part of the fun, that each one chooses which side to be on.
I give it a 7.2/10, the concept is very good, the setting, the performances are decent, it's a good science fiction story but it has a couple of details that didn't convince me. You can get it on Netflix and it lasts a little less than two hours. I leave the trailer here.
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
¡A hug to everyone, see you next time!
