(ESP-ENG) Companion | A different kind of AI - Movie Review!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
The last movie I saw concerning an AI was Subservience with Megan Fox, a film where she is a kind of nanny but due to different events she ends up becoming a killing machine. Is that film very different from this one? - Not really. And that's the problem with AI stories, they are falling into an abysmal monotony making people not connect much with this kind of plots. Companion has a differentiating factor and that is that this AI does not know that it is one, it thinks at all times that it is a human which makes the background is somewhat different. But despite this, this film manages to save itself? - We will see.
We have Iris (Sophie Thatcher), a woman who seems to be Josh's (Jack Quaid) girlfriend and as a couple they are very comfortable and happy. One day they decide to go on a trip to the mountains with a group of friends arriving at a spectacular house whose owner is a Russian millionaire. From the beginning they notice something strange, like forced interactions, but it all comes to nothing. Everything changes when this Russian guy drops dead, a situation that upsets the whole trip and the true intentions of some of those “friends” who were there come to light. From here on we will see a film that is a kind of psychological thriller, with horror and a bit of comedy.
As it was already hinted at in the beginning this film has something different and that is the fact that Iris doesn't know that she is an AI. This changes things because the direction of these films has always been that these robots are quite aware of what they are and based on that they end up doing everything we already know. With Iris it's not like that, she feels and perceives herself as a human which makes everything a bit more realistic because her actions end up coming from a place with more “feelings” like love, fear, revenge, etc. Also this makes the plot more unpredictable because at the end of the day we don't know how Iris and all these people involved will react.
It is not boring, I confess that I started watching it a little predisposed but as it progressed this intrigue increased, the thriller touch has it because during much of the film we see that there is a tension in the environment; terror also but not from generating fear but we are talking about violent terror, there is much more gore than I imagined, it is not crazy but it is a little out of the normal standards. And finally we have the comedy. The situations, interactions and personalities of these characters are all bathed in a light-hearted “I Know What You Did Last Summer” style.
The plot is not linear because there are several plot twists that make everything more interesting, some you expect, others not so much. Sophie Tatcher is one of those actresses who are slowly making a place in the industry, personally I find amazing how she acts and in this film is no exception. She injects a lot of personality to the roles. Jack Quaid is best known for his performance in The Boys; here he plays a man who resents life because, according to him, it has treated him badly. An acceptable performance. The rest are just supporting characters.
Anyway, yet another artificial intelligence movie. It's good, I'm lying if I say I didn't like it or that it bored me. It's not a big deal but I appreciate that they gave another twist to the whole thing of having these companion robots, the human approach of Iris is what changed everything and what really differentiates it a bit from the rest. I give it a 7/10, I think it's worth giving it a chance. It lasts about an hour and a half. I leave the trailer here.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
¡A hug to everyone, see you next time!
This totally reminds me of an episode in SHIELD series where they created an AI that is so aware of its surrounding. I suppose this is like Her but horror version of it. - @macchiata
Yeah, it has some Her with Ex Machina and Terminator references haha... it's good, the horror is decent considering how half graphic it is.
