(ESP-ENG) Cellar Door | Everyone has secrets - Movie Review!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
These thoughts didn't really come to me after watching this movie but it may have helped me to reaffirm a couple of things: the first is that you never get to know people no matter how many years go by and the second is that derived from the first thing EVERYONE has secrets. And this for me are not opinions, they are realities. This is more or less what this film is about, and beyond being a horror, I would categorize it as a psychological thriller with a very high level of intrigue. I watched it in a very random way and I did it basically because two actors caught my attention: Jordana Brewster, the famous Mia in Fast and Furious and the great Laurence Fishburne. Was it worth it?
The story centers on a couple, Sera (Jordana) and John (Scott Speedman), a happy and healthy marriage, in theory. They are in search of a child but it has become very difficult for them to the point that they had a miscarriage. To put all this behind them, they decide to move away from the city to something farther away and quiet. In this search is when they meet Emmett (Laurence), a mysterious but charismatic man who offers them his big house, but really the house of anyone's dreams, the question is that she comes with a single condition: they can NEVER open the basement door. In case of disobeying such condition the house immediately returns to Emmett.
What happens? - Well, as expected, they accept the deal and begin to live in that almost mansion but knowing that something disturbing could be in the basement. The anxiety generated by not being able to do something that you have at hand for the simple fact that it was “forbidden” is very great, it is almost a feeling of anguish. This is suffered more than anything by John who little by little this feeling eats him up inside; Sera on the other hand does not give importance to that because her only intention is to live in that house. What this does is to generate conflicts of interest so that the marriage begins to show some cracks.
The plot is rather simple but it has a couple of interesting things: a few plot twists that I honestly didn't see coming, I will always appreciate that they use this resource to surprise the viewer but in this case I feel that they did it in a decent way. The film does not bore because it is always latent that one of the two is hiding something, more him than her but from the beginning there is something about her that does not quite fit, something in her personality generates some distrust. John if he is very basic, with him if you can realize what is going on. As I said the main premise of the film is the secrets and it is based on them that the plot develops.
But when I talk about secrets it is a reminder of what I said earlier: you never get to know people. It's very strong how people can act with the intention of hiding or protecting some interest, taste or idea regardless of what the other party might think or say. This is the real heart of the film. Hence, this is far from horror and becomes a thriller full of suspicion. The characters are very average, too much I would say. Both Jordana and Scott don't stand out, maybe she slightly more than him but nothing important. The real weight is not them but what the blessed door represents and all that it generates.
In short, this is a perfect film for when you have nothing else to watch. It is true that the plot and the background is interesting but I think they could have exploited it a little more. I give it a 6/10 only for the plot twists that gave more depth to the story. It's not boring but I feel it could have been more powerful. It lasts an hour and a half. Here is the trailer.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
¡A hug to everyone, see you next time!
