(ESP-ENG) Beetlejuice Beetlejuice - Movie Review! [Spooky Season]
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
The great Tim Burton did it again. Beetlejuice is one of the great classics of cinema and the American director whose origin dates back to 1988, the year of release of the original film and that for this 2024 managed to rescue part of its original cast to give life to a kind of sequel that brings back the Deetz family and the disgusting, womanizing and very particular Beetlejuice. Right off the bat I can tell you that this is a film full of dark comedy, a bit of suspense and that characteristic Burton touch of his films, and visually it is a spectacle from beginning to end.
As I said, this is a sequel, that is, the story continues. The Deetz family had left that town, Winter Rider, but for reasons that go beyond that, they were forced to return. Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) had a daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega), a teenager very, very skeptical of everything that has to do with ghosts, something super ironic considering her mother's abilities. The thing is that they together with Delia (Catherine O'Hara), Lydia's stepmother, return to that house where they lived so many things but not with the intention of staying but to sell it. But things quickly start to get strange.
Astrid falls in love with a young man from that town, a relationship that will give a lot to talk about and is one of the coolest twists in the film. In parallel, we have the plot of the underworld where Beetlejuice is looking for Dolores (Monica Bellucci), his ex-wife who also has a somewhat striking ability and who is committing crimes in that place. In the end everything turns around and the stories come together to bring this movie to life. The first thing I have to say is that I honestly enjoyed the film a lot, I didn't think it would hold my attention so much but yes, it is a very good sequel. And this is so for several reasons: Burton kept the essence of the original in every way, the cast is very top notch, having Michael Keaton again is definitely a plus and the few new characters were also very successful.
I think the most important thing of all is the visuals. Tim Burton did something in this movie and that is that he didn't use CGI as we know it today. All the visual effects, special effects and makeup were done manually, very old school. This is because of what I said before, to keep the vibe and essence of more than 30 years ago. Even the costumes are not very elaborate, everything is very “simple”, which is what makes the film so well appreciated. Still it is a spectacle to watch, the saturation of colors, lighting, the extravagance in the effects, everything revolves in an absurd world full of the classic terror of Burton's mind. Honestly? - It's like watching a movie from the 90's. Very top of the line filmography and cinematography.
As for the plot, it obviously has elements from the original film, it draws on them but there are a couple of additions that give the story more depth. The context is the same, trying to avoid calling Beetlejuice but eventually they will have to. Since there are parallel stories you never get bored, you always get hooked on what's going on in both worlds. The comedy is still the main course, but that one that is peculiar to Burton. There are a lot of supernatural elements, it's a dark fantasy at the end of the day so it's extremely graphic but still super familiar. At the beginning I said it, there's a cool plot twist that helps the film go a certain way and ends up being what it is.
The characters. All and without exception were up to par, personally I would have liked to see more of Monica Bellucci, I think her character was enough for the little they showed of her. That's the only negative thing I have to say since I honestly liked the whole cast. Keaton and Winona Ryder are such an endearing duo that seeing them together again is something very nostalgic and of great quality. Jenna Ortega always gives good roles, here she was not demanded so much but she fulfills her role in a good way. There is a character that amused me and that is Willem Dafoe, another of the stars of this film. It's a very important cast. Danny DeVito also makes an appearance. 10/10 all around.
I highly recommend it, it is worth seeing, whether or not you are a fan of the character or the saga. I give it 8/10, incredible that being a sequel after so many years it has worked so well, something that usually doesn't happen. It lasts less than 2 hours, I leave the trailer below.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
¡A hug to everyone, see you next time!
Still haven't seen this one though I feel like I already know what to expect from it.
The first film is really solid. So perhaps my curiosity will win me over eventually.
I think if you can tell what's coming but it's still worth watching. Visually it's almost the same as the original and that the cast repeats makes it even better. Personally I was very surprised.
