In his screenwriting and directorial debut, Abel Ferrara creates a visionary war film like no other through his trademark neo-noir prism.

Ethan Hawke is at his best in his intense role as a troubled American soldier sent on a life-and-death mission in war-torn Rome on the eve of an attack.

Ferrara immerses us in the protagonist's shattered psyche amidst the ruins through chaotic but riveting POV photography.

The timely themes of the futility of conflict and how distorted reality becomes in the midst of it resonate in this post-truth era.

Hawke anchors the film with a nuanced display under grueling conditions reminiscent of greats like Brando.

Zeros and Ones is a haunting and unforgettable treatise on war and the fate of humanity from an auteur at his most provocative.

Zeros and Ones was officially selected in the midnight section of the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, providing Abel Ferrara with a high-profile platform for his return to cinema.

At Cannes, Ethan Hawke received universal praise for his intense physical and psychological performance, though individual French festivals remain his only major award nomination to date.

Nonetheless, the screening of Midnight at Cannes helped to increase initial interest in art house cinemas in the United States. It debuted commercially with $75,000 in a handful of screenings, before expanding to more than 50 theaters and surpassing $1 million in the domestic market.

International numbers were lower, but solid for an auteur thriller, bringing it to $3 million worldwide on a modest budget.

I have seen only a couple of this guy’s movies and I have liked them. I’m not one for remembering names. But this looks interesting enough
