Natalie Portman gave a stellar performance as the spunky Novalee, winning our hearts as she navigated motherhood and small town gossip with equal parts charm and grit. Williams captured her spirit perfectly.

Ashley Judd and Stockard Channing also shone in supporting roles, as anchors of the quirky but loving community surrounding Novalee. Judd especially radiated a quiet strength.

Where the Heart Is tackles issues of class, gender and personal growth with compassion and humour. But at its core was a message of resilience on behalf of women, reminding us that home is the loved ones who stand by our side.

Director Matt Williams infused this small-town comedy-drama with warmth and wit. From his first frames in an Oklahoma Walmart, he masterfully immersed us in the plight of 17-year-old Novalee Nation.

With witty dialogue and a gallery of well-drawn characters, this warm story was just the tonic America seemed to need in 2000. For this reviewer, it remains one of the indie dramas of its time. A real feel-good gem that deserves to be seen again and again.

Natalie Portman was widely acclaimed for her starring role, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical. A worthy recognition for her charm and depth in the role.
