The Truffle Hunters, a quiet triumph

Filmed in the misty forests of Italy's Piedmont, amidst gnarled trees and meandering paths, his non-intrusive camera observes the declining tradition of truffle hunting through the eyes of elders.

With the patience of masters, they followed these intrepid foragers and their canine companions as they unearthed the legendary Alba truffle from the earth, uncovering both treasures and an insight into humanity's place.

There was poetry in the rituals shown, from the meticulous training of the dogs to the gatherings at weekend markets to swap stories. However, the film leaves a bittersweet note in its endangerment of an ancient livelihood.

Directors Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw have given filmgoers a seemingly simple but deeply resonant documentary about man's relationship with nature.

Dweck and Kershaw created not only a loving ode to agriculture, but a profound elegy for community, history and the man who cultivates nature rather than plunders it. The result is a deeply moving and philosophical film.

While promoting conservation, the filmmakers celebrate the small joys of life and the resilience of humanity when it maintains a symbiosis with the land rather than dominating it. A masterclass in the power of patient, empathetic non-fiction storytelling.

The Truffle Hunters was a quiet triumph that affirms the potential of documentary to move and enlighten when confronted with visual splendour and themes brimming with profound lived wisdom. One of the true cinematic gems of 2020.
