The Sleeping Dictionary

Director Guy Jenkin crafted a mesmerizing period drama with The Sleeping Dictionary, which transported me to colonial Sarawak through its meticulous production.

Set in the 1830s, the film follows a young Welsh girl named Selima who is taken in by an indigenous tribe and conveys their daily struggles under the ruthless Brooke dynasty.

Over the course of two riveting hours, Guy Jenkin relies on the power of silent observation to immerse us in this rich foreign culture with thoughtful authenticity. He understands that film is a visual medium that lets authentic details breathe.

Jessica Alba delivers a stellar, breakout performance as Selima, a wide-eyed girl whose expressive face is an open window into her budding cultural awakening. She is supported by a nuanced cast.

Cinematographer Martin Fuhrer's languid photography caresses the textures of the jungle. Every frame could hang in a museum. You can almost feel the sweltering heat of Fuhrer's Borneo.

The Sleeping Dictionary captivated and enlightened me, and its patient storytelling resonated for nights. A cinematic poem not to be missed by those who appreciate art that broadens cultural perspectives.

The film was screened at prestigious festivals such as Locarno, generating buzz among moviegoers around the world.

Unfortunately, its limited release meant that box office receipts were modest: about $200,000 against a budget of $2 million.
