This is a psychological thriller directed by Paul Schrader, which focuses on the life of William Tell, played by Oscar Isaac, a former military welder turned professional card player.
William Tell is a solitary and methodical character who has spent years in prison for his involvement in torture during the Iraq war. Now, he lives an austere life, travelling from casino to casino, where he counts cards at blackjack.

His life is governed by a strict routine, which allows him to maintain control and avoid any emotional connection to the world around him.
The story takes a turn when Tell meets Cirk, a young man played by Tye Sheridan, who seeks revenge against a military officer who was responsible for the death of his father. Cirk is attracted to Tell's life and asks him to teach him how to gamble and win money in the casinos.
As their relationship develops, Tell becomes a father figure to Cirk, but he also faces his own inner demons.
