"The Accused" is a legal drama released in 1988 and directed by Jonathan Kaplan. The film is loosely based on the 1983 gang rape of Cheryl Araujo in New Bedford, Massachusetts and deals with sensitive issues such as sexual violence and the search for justice.

The story focuses on Sarah Tobias, played masterfully by Jodie Foster, a young woman living a complicated and challenging life.

One fateful day, Sarah decides to go out for fun and ends up at a local bar, where she encounters a group of men who harass and sexually assault her in a brutal rape.

The plot takes an unexpected turn when Sarah decides to confront her attackers and seek justice, however, the legal system does not seem to be on her side, as the prosecution is unwilling to take the case to full trial due to a lack of hard evidence.

It is at this point that Kathryn Murphy, a tenacious lawyer played by Kelly McGillis, enters the picture.

Kathryn decides to take Sarah's case and fight for the justice she so richly deserves. Together, they embark on an arduous journey in search of truth and redemption.

The film starkly and realistically depicts the obstacles that both Sarah and Kathryn face in their struggle against a justice system and a society that tends to blame the victims rather than hold the perpetrators accountable.

As the case progresses, the true dimensions of sexual violence are revealed and how it affects not only the victim, but also everyone involved.
