I am very happy, finally given the time and opportunity to participate and contribute again to the Movies & TV Shows Community. This time, I would like to give a recommendation for the latest Korean drama, Revenant, and three reasons why you must watch it.

Synopsis of K-Drama - Revenant

Gu San-yeong (played by Kim Tea-ri), a hardworking woman who lives barely alone with her mother. One day, Gun San-yeong went with his mother to mourn someone. He found one fact that his father who he thought had died when he was five years old was still alive, and he came to the actual death of his father.

Gun San-yeong got a relic from his father, and after that he felt many strange and mystical things. From then on, everyone he hated would die, either by suicide or by accident. The incident brought him together with Yeom Hae-sang (played by Oh Jung Sae), a professor of Korean folklore who has the ability to see ghosts. Professor Yeom gets a letter from his father Gu San-yeong which contains a request for help to look after his child.

From Professor Yeom's observation, Gu San-yeong is possessed by a very dangerous female demon and he has been searching for and researching this phenomenon for a long time.

My Three Reasons to Watch Revenant:

Unique Premise and Different Genre
One of the Korean drama genres that I like is the investigative drama genre. I have watched several investigative K-dramas such as Law School (2021), Through The Darkness (2022), Beyond Evil (2021), Signal (2016), or Partners of Justice. If the dramas I mentioned are police or prosecutor investigation dramas, Revenant takes a different point of view.

By genre, Revenant is a Korean drama with a combination of three genres, investigative thriller, horror mystery and also fantasy. The initial premise of this drama opens with the question "do you believe in ghosts?"

Actor and ActressSource Picture

In the first two episodes that I watched, we were given chills by the storyline and acting from Kim Tae-ri. There are almost no jumpscares, but I dare not watch it at night because of that, I haven't watched episodes 3 and 4, because I want to watch it with my wife.

Revenant is a drama that is perfect for people who like the horror genre but also like the investigative genre. Apart from that, I also like the character of Yeom Hae-sang (played by Oh Jung Sue), a professor of folklore (the field of historical studies of legends and Korean folk culture) who conducts investigations into the phenomenon of possession experienced by Gu San-yeong. Oh yes, you have to seriously watch this drama, because we won't know if the killer is a ghost or a human.

Signal Connection
Signal ConnetionSource Picture Signal and Revenant are connected with this man.

My second reason, Revenant has a connection with one of my favorite dramas, namely Signal (2016). For fans of Korean dramas, Signal (2016) is one of the toplists, and is also considered the best Korean drama about investigative mystery of all time. The scenario writer for these two dramas is Kim Eun-Sook, one of the genius screen writers for many popular Korean dramas. At first, I didn't realize that this drama was written by the same person.

I only did an analysis when I saw the first two episodes of Revenant, I felt that the storyline pattern and scenario were a bit similar to Signal. Signal is an investigative Korean drama with a time-skip (or fantasy) plot added, while Revenant is also like an investigative Korean drama, with a ghost or mystical premise.

Because, Kim Tae-ri
One of the biggest reasons and factors for people to choose the drama or film they are going to watch is the actor or actress who plays it. Even though, a famous actress or actor is not a guarantee that a drama or film will be of good quality or a good film, it does make it easier for us to sort the dramas that we will choose to watch. There are lots of dramas or movies in this world, of course we won't be able to watch them all. So, we need those variables to sort the drama.

Kim Tae-riSource Picture

Back about Revenant, one of the biggest reasons I watched this on-going drama is Kim Tae-ri. Why is it like that ? Throughout his career, Kim Tae-ri has only starred in three dramas, namely Mr. Sunshine (2018), Twenty Five Twenty One (2022), and currently Revenant (2023). The most interesting part for me is that in all three dramas, Kim Tae-ri is always the main female lead.

The quality and totality of acting from Kim Tae-ri for K-Drama is one of the best for me. This is proven in the three dramas he has played, always in different genres. Let me explain a little, Mr. Sunshine has both the romance and sageuk genres (Korean historical drama genre), where Kim Tea Ri plays Go Ae-Shin, the granddaughter of a noble who has two different lives, namely as a princess and as a revolutionary warrior.

Twenty Five Twenty One is a Korean drama with the romance and comedy genre, Kim Tae-ri plays Na He-doo, a high school student and also a Korean national fencing athlete. He won the Baeksang Award thanks to his acting in this drama. Apart from that, one of the things I like about Kim Tea-ri is her acting interactions with her co-stars.

So? In the first two episodes of Revenant, I feel that Kim Tae-ri has succeeded in attracting many people to watch it. Don't believe ? you try to prove to watch it.
