Zodiac is one of those movies that grabs you from the first scene and keeps you hooked until the last moment and this is not only because of the exciting story itself but also because of the directing and acting that makes you feel like you are part of the investigation The movie is directed by David Fincher and this man is known for his cold and dark style that puts you inside the minds of the characters instead of giving you easy answers.
The movie talks about the serial killer Zodiac who was working in the late sixties and early seventies in San Francisco and sent coded messages to newspapers to play cat and mouse with the police The story does not only go in the direction of Who is the killer but it delves into the lives of journalists and investigators whose entire lives were turned upside down because of this case This is perhaps the most brilliant thing about the movie that it is not just a traditional investigation movie but also a psychological study of obsession and its effect on people.
Acting Performance
Jake Gyllenhaal does a fantastic job as Robert Greensmith a cartoonist who becomes obsessed with solving the mystery and this is evident in every scene from his worried looks to his way of speaking that makes you feel like he is unable to think about anything other than the case Mark Ruffalo was also excellent in his role as the detective who is trying to understand the killer but at the same time feels frustrated by the lack of sufficient evidence As for Robert Downey Jr he added a touch of charisma and sharp wit as a journalist trying to find the truth but is ultimately destroyed by the case.
David Fincher as usual uses dark lighting and long shots to make you feel anxious and tense as if you are living in the atmosphere of the investigation yourself In certain scenes the camera stays fixed for a long time and this makes you feel uncomfortable especially in scenes that contain a direct threat The soundtrack is very minimal but this increases the feeling of psychological horror because you rely on natural sounds such as the sound of paper the ticking of a clock and the calm that makes you anticipate anything that might happen.
Rhythm and Duration
The movie is long about 2 and a half hours and this may make some people feel that it is slow especially since the events develop gradually and there are no action scenes or dramatic explosion moments But in reality it is a movie based on details and every scene has a purpose whether it is clarifying new information in the investigation or revealing part of the characters If you like movies that rely on dialogue and psychological analysis you will love Zodiac but if you are looking for a fast and direct movie you may feel that it is a bit exhausting.
Zodiac is not just a movie about a serial killer but it is a movie about the obsession with searching for the truth and the impact of crimes on the lives of people who are trying to understand them David Fincher presented an exciting and frightening cinematic experience at the same time with strong acting performances and brilliant directing that keeps you tense all the time If you like movies that make you think and analyze this is a movie you must watch but it is not a traditional horror movie or full of action It is a movie that relies on psychological and rational horror and this is what makes it a very special experience.
Not me seeing the title and thinking about zodiac signs. Lol.
I'm curious about what Zodiac's reason for sending the coded messages are. Sounds like a thriller. Good one.
