Eddie Murphy is Back as Axel Foley in "Beverly Hills Cop.

Never in a million years did I think that Eddie Murphy would return as Axel Foley, but here he is.

"Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F" is the latest installment of the classic action-comedy series; it’s directed by Mark Malloy – his directorial debut. It has been 40 years since the first movie and 30 years since the last one, and this feels like a genuine trip down memory lane.

When watching "Axel F", I felt like it was nostalgia all over again. However, there was also something fresh about it. Eddie Murphy brings back that same vibrant energy with him. In contrast to Beverly Hills Cop 3 where he was just going through the motions, he is fully committed to his role here. There’s nothing better than seeing Axel Foley back in action—doing what he does best—solving crimes while making us laugh.

Familiar faces return to the screen, which gives one that feeling of a warm embrace from the past. Also, we see new characters such as Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing a young cop. He, however, adds some newness to the film despite it still focusing on Murphy. His relationship with Foley’s daughter is a game changer as far as this film is concerned although I think they could have done more with it.

As for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, it follows the same pattern as the earlier parts. In Detroit, something goes wrong which brings Foley to Beverly Hills. It means he gets into all sorts of problems and action scenes. Although this may seem predictable, it also maintains what we enjoy about the series. But there was a subplot concerning Foley’s estranged daughter that seemed out of place for me. This didn’t quite fit with my vision of Axel Foley—someone who has always been responsible and loyal.

A Product of Its Time

Every "Beverly Hills Cop" movie is like a time capsule. The first one represents an ideal ’80s action-comedy. The sequels depict the ’90s atmosphere. And now "Axel F" takes us back to today with all those modern twists and a touch of nostalgia in it. This was very convenient because I watched it on Netflix. I didn’t have to drive or pay for a ticket. I just sat on my comfortable sofa flipping channels using my remote control.
