The Pope's Exorcist // Review and opinions [ENG-ESP]
Greetings friends of Movies&TVShow, long time no pass by here, regarding new movies in the HBOMAX package that I had hired, in April of this year "The Pope's Exorcist" was released. I saw its promotion on TV and the truth is that the title did not catch my attention, I like the horror genre, but not the type of movie, I am not a fan at all of exorcisms. I find these rituals creepy, repetitive, besides, those kind of scenes are very disturbing in my opinion. I don't have good memories of "The Exorcist", known as the scariest movie of all time. Some films of this type are good, and I must mention "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" or "The Possession of Hannah Grace", but I really must confess that I am not attracted to watch them.
You may wonder why I saw this movie then, a friend of mine saw it and told me it was good. In this film we have Russell Crowe as the protagonist and in a new facet, if we were used to see him as a Gladiator, in action or drama movies, now we will see him as a priest, and not just any priest, he is nothing less than the pope's exorcist. The movie revolves around the exorcisms that Gabriele Amorth (Russell Crowe) was able to solve, some not so successful, in addition, he showed that he was not a traditional priest, he was rebellious, misbehaved, wrote books "and these were really good", used psychology and got into a lot of trouble.
After going through several episodes and one of them so traumatic that it marked him for life, Amorth was called to save the life of a boy named Henry (Peter DeSouza-Feighoney) who had just moved from the United States to Spain with his mother Julia (Alex Essoe) and sister Amy (Laurel Marsden). It's amazing how in the least expected places demonic possessions happen, in this case, the family moves to an old abbey that holds terrifying secrets, a holy place that was desecrated and was the perfect setting for that peculiar exorcism.
The goal was to save Henry, there was not much time left, a possessed body weakens to the point of no vital signs. Both Gabriele Amorth and Father Esquibel (Daniel Zovatto) will have to fight in a race against time and also against their worst fears and demons, but first, they must discover the name of that macabre entity that took possession of the boy.
The film is quite entertaining, both for the plot and for the character of Gabriele Amorth, a rebellious priest, foul-mouthed, sincere but sarcastic, as well as funny. I think this time Crowe stole the show with a very particular performance, with a touch of humor and proving to be an eminence in what he does, being the pope's exorcist, not for nothing he was appointed as the chief exorcist. That facet made him look funny despite being a horror film, it reminded me of the personality of Hugh Laurie (Gregory House) starring in the series Dr. House, Gabriele Amorth was a Dr. House made priest. I consider all exorcisms to be creepy, and in fact, the boy looked pretty scary, there are physical changes such as eye color and deterioration of the fleshly body that makes us all tremble, not to mention the psychological part, how he plays with the minds of those who dare to challenge him and also those who stand by and watch.
If I tell you that the dialogues softened the terrifying part of the film, would you believe it, unbelievable, but it was so, instead of scaring me like in "The Exorcist", I was somewhat amused by the conversations between Amorth and the demon that possessed Henry, they were rather humorous dialogues, that played with a mysterious, terrifying plot and the endless ticking of time. Up to this point everything was going well, interesting, entertaining, however, then it took a lackluster turn that killed all my expectations. I am no expert on the subject of exorcism and I know that fiction plays tricks on the plot to make it even more interesting. A possessed body loses control over itself and dies just for not living a normal life, such as eating and drinking water, it begins to decompensate until it dies, which is exactly why both Amorth and Esquibel did not have much time to save Henry.
This happened to Emily Rose, while Hannah Grace had to be burned, and finally, Father Damien Karras (Jason Miller) in "The Exorcist" ended up throwing himself out of a window. What happened in "The Exorcist of the Pope", I found incredible, it left me stunned and it demolishes all that theory that we saw in previous exorcism movies. I insist that I do not know the subject, but I found a contradiction that disappointed all the ground that "The Pope's Exorcist" had gained in me.

Saludos amigos de Movies&TVShow, tiempo sin pasar por acá, a propósito de nuevas películas en el paquete de HBOMAX que había contratado, en abril de este mismo año se estrenó “El exorcista del papa”. Vi su promoción en la TV y la verdad es que el título no llamó mi atención, me gusta el género terror, pero no el tipo de película, no soy fan en lo absoluto de los exorcismos. Estos rituales me parecen espeluznantes, repetitivos, además, ese tipo de escenas son muy perturbadoras a mi parecer. No tengo buenos recuerdos de “El exorcista”, conocida como la película más terrorífica de todos los tiempos. Algunos films de este tipo son buenos, y debo citar “El exorcismo de Emily Rose” o “La posesión de Hannah Grace”, pero es que realmente debo confesar que no me atrae verlas.
Se preguntarán porque vi entonces esta película, un amigo la vio y me dijo que era buena. En este film tenemos a Russell Crowe como protagonista y en una nueva faceta, si estábamos acostumbrados a verlo como un Gladiador, en películas de acción o drama, ahora lo veremos de sacerdote, y no uno cualquiera, el es nada menos que el exorcista del papa. La película gira en torno los exorcismos que Gabriele Amorth (Russell Crowe) fue capaz de resolver, algunos no tan exitosos, además, demostró que no era un sacerdote tradicional, era rebelde, mal portado, escribía libros “y estos sí que eran muy buenos”, usaba la psicología y se metía en muchos problemas.
Luego de pasar por varios episodios y uno de ellos tan traumático que lo marcó de por vida, Amorth fue llamado para salvar la vida de un niño llamado Henry (Peter DeSouza-Feighoney) que recién se mudó desde Estados Unidos a España con su madre Julia (Alex Essoe) y su hermana Amy (Laurel Marsden). Es increíble como en los lugares menos esperados ocurren las posesiones demoníacas, en este caso, la familia se muda a una vieja abadía que guarda secretos aterradores, un lugar santo que fue profanado y fue el perfecto escenario de aquel peculiar exorcismo.
El objetivo era salvar a Henry, no quedaba mucho tiempo, un cuerpo poseído se debilita hasta quedar sin signos vitales. Tanto Gabriele Amorth como el padre Esquibel (Daniel Zovatto) tendrán que luchar en una carrera contra el tiempo y también contra sus peores miedos y demonios, pero antes, deberán descubrir el nombre de aquel macabro ente que se apoderó del niño.
La película es bastante entretenida, tanto por la trama como por el personaje de Gabriele Amorth, un sacerdote rebelde, mal hablado, sincero pero sarcástico, además de divertido. Creo que esta vez Crowe se robó el show con una actuación muy particular, con un toque de humor y demostrando ser una eminencia en lo que hace, ser el exorcista del papa, no por nada lo designaron como el jefe de los exorcistas. Esa faceta lo hizo lucir divertido pese a ser un film de terror, me recordó la personalidad de Hugh Laurie (Gregory House) protagonista de la serie Dr. House, Gabriele Amorth era un Dr. House hecho sacerdote. Considero que todos los exorcismos son espeluznantes, y de hecho, el niño se veía bastante tenebroso, hay cambios físicos como el color de los ojos y el deterioro del cuerpo carnal que nos pone a todos a temblar, sin mencionar la parte psicológica, como juega con la mente de quienes se atreven a desafiarlo y también de los que se quedan a mirar.
¿Si les cuento que los diálogos suavizaron la parte aterradora del film, lo creerían?, ¿increíble no?, pero así fue, en lugar de asustarme como en “El exorcista”, me causaba algo de gracia las conversaciones entre Amorth y el demonio que poseyó a Henry, eran diálogos más bien jocosos, que jugaban con una trama misteriosa, terrorífica y el tic tac interminable del tiempo. Hasta aquí todo iba bien, interesante, entretenido, no obstante, luego tomó un giro deslucido que acabó con todas mis expectativas. No soy experta en el tema del exorcismo y sé que la ficción hace de las suyas en la trama para hacerla aún más interesante. Un cuerpo poseído pierde el control sobre sí mismo y muere justamente por no hacer vida normal, como comer y tomar agua, comienza a descompensarse hasta morir, justo por esto tanto Amorth como Esquibel no tenían mucho tiempo para salvar a Henry.
Así le pasó a Emily Rose, en tanto que a Hannah Grace tuvieron que quemarla, para finalizar, el Padre Damien Karras (Jason Miller) en “El exorcista” terminó lanzándose por una ventana. Lo que sucedió en “El exorcista del papa”, me pareció increíble, me dejó atónita y echa por tierra toda esa teoría que vimos en las anteriores películas de exorcismo. Insisto que desconozco el tema, pero encontré una contradicción que decepcionó todo el terreno que había ganado en mí “el exorcista del papa” .

Hola amiga, una película muy buena y lograron armar un gran tema desde que inicia hasta que termina, donde ese terror aumenta de una manera increíble y sobre todo una de las cosas que me llamo la atención es todo esos secretos que estarán allí ocultos en el Vaticano y como lo van demostrando, además ese niño no es nada agradable y a primera vista causa miedo jajja. Genial que hayas disfrutado de esa gran película y estoy seguro de que esta historia tiene que continuar.
