Recently, the grand opening of a new chapter in the history of the DC film and series universe ended. It is true that the first film will be Superman, but it is not the one that opens the "James Gunn era". If you know the work of the director of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad trilogies, you know more or less what to expect. As in the above works, we got a story with little-known characters from the DC / Marvel universe. Those with a problematic past, difficulties in establishing relationships and overcoming their own shortcomings. Plus some blood, edgy jokes, funny and crazy situations so that it doesn't get too serious.

When I turned on episode 1, I thought my partner would complain. She likes the DC world, she has watched films (and others) with Batman and Superman, she recognizes some of the less recognizable characters, but she is not a fan like me. How surprised I was when Asia wanted me to watch the next episodes more than I did. We watched almost all of them in one night. We had two left, which I saved for another date. The films he directed or actively produced are of varying quality, but it's hard to accuse them of being weak. It is also clear that he is happy to use the free hand given to him by the people in power in the giant media conglomerate. Some will be surprised - "what is he saying? Gunn has a free hand, but he creates the same thing again!" And I'll admit they're right, but just because James is doing the same thing again doesn't mean he doesn't have a free hand. He uses lesser-known characters, we practically don't see the well-known ones who could attract new viewers, he chooses a more difficult path for himself. It is clear that he follows a similar principle as when creating films - he gives a chance to the lesser known.

I would like to say that thanks to this we will get a series with a refined formula, but I would be slightly wrong. However, apart from one important issue, I have no major reasons to complain. This is the main plot. This is not a huge disappointment, because this is more or less how I imagined the finale after the first episodes, but there is no point in pretending that no mistake was made. Did it bother me? Let me say this, if the same mistake was made in a series about, for example, Superman, I would be angry. Since I don't know these characters, I'm completely indifferent to it. The introduction to the series is the aftermath of the events of the film The Suicide Squad. Due to the political scandal, the US government signed a law under which the secret services cannot use human resources or something like that. But no one wrote a word about non-humans. Excluding Rick Flag.

The first task of the new special unit is to protect the ruler of the new state. Then there's a twist, but it doesn't really matter. The characters and their story are important, and their mission is only an addition, or rather, it serves as an arena in which they can be presented. The main character seems to be Bride, a character clearly inspired by the 1935 film based on the book by Mary Shelley (author of Frankstein). Even though we meet her as a rebellious tomboy, we quickly learn that the image of a bitch is a shield against her hurt feelings. He uses firearms, but he can also fly (or glide, like Knuckles in Sonic) and punch someone hard in the face. She was voiced by Indira Varma, a very experienced British actress.

Her greatest friend is Nina Mazursky, who speaks to us with the voice of Zoë Chao. Rybka is almost the complete opposite of Bride - she doesn't swear, she tries to avoid violence, she trusts others and wants to help them. As Amanda Waller said, she's the heart of this team. I recommend avoiding spoilers.

David Harbor himself played the role of Frankenstein. He is not a member of Task Force M, but can be described as a "temporary ally". He appears in some episodes and serves as force support. I liked his relationship with Bride. It seems simple, and repeating a few jokes too often does not help change this impression, but with each subsequent episode, as we get to know the perspectives of both characters better and better, we see that it is not. Gunn has once again shown that he is awesome when it comes to writing these types of relationships and issues.

Rick's father Flag is the only human character on this team. He is not much different from his son, at most he is a little more polite and calmer. In his case you will hear Frank Grillo.

One of my favorites is Dr. Phosphorus. This is due to his power and cheeky, yet honorable nature. I think he is the main damage dealer on this team. It's hard for me to say anything about him without spoilers, so I'll just say that he would get along with Rick from Rick & Morty. Both scientists are equally direct, sadistic and have a soft underbelly in the form of family.

Weasel plays a similar role to Nina, just in a slightly different way. You could say it's the team's mascot. G.I Robot, in turn, is an artifact from World War II. A machine created to murder Nazis and more. The jokes with them write themselves. Sean Gunn voiced both characters.

We will also see Batman (a very good cameo, appropriate to this character), one of his opponents and characters we met in season 1 of Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad - Amanda Waller and her henchmen.

As I wrote in the introduction, this is another story about a group of outcasts trying to cope with their traumas and at the same time find the meaning of life. I limited myself to a minimalist description of the characters because I don't want to spoil the fun for you. Their plots did not surprise me with their originality or innovative approach, they were just solidly written stories. However, if I had known what would happen in the later episodes, I would have missed out a lot. Some of the threads were touching, others were funny, some of them forced me to think and look at a given problem from a different perspective. Since this isn't the first time James Gunn has presented a script this way, it's hard for me to rate it. Even though these are different universes, due to the director and his style, everything blends into one whole for me. My partner, on the other hand, immediately liked the characters.

She hasn't become a fan of them, but after a few years of knowing her, I can see when she really likes something and when she's just a temporary crush. Unfortunately, I cannot assess the quality of the original dubbing, because due to Asia's preferences, we watched it with the Polish language version. Surprisingly, the Polish dubbing is really good and funny.

The second and third advantage of this series is the juggling of animation types/drawing styles and editing. It may not be the latest animated Miles Morales, but the creators used different animation styles - e.g. some scenes are made in an anime style, while others reminded me of old cartoons. I don't know anything about line art or animation, I can only say, like an ignorant person, that some scenes were so beautiful that you could admire them. It's also clear that Gunn isn't lying when he says he's interested in Japanese animation. There are too many clichés and shots that are a Japanese invention (or if they are not theirs, I think they popularized them). I also don't know anything about assembly, so I'll limit myself to a few words. Remember that infamous Sir Jorah Mormont skin treatment scene from Game of Thrones? Yes, I'm talking about the disgusting one that you can't forget. Specifically, its final stage, when we go from the operating room to the inn. There are even more such "nice" and smooth transitions in CC and they are equally creative.

A big advantage of Gunn's work is the strong emphasis on the soundtrack. Music was one of the most important pillars of GotG's success - lots of memes, comments, entries on the Internet (a free advertising campaign for Disney), trailer views, good music that would attract additional viewers outside the target group to cinemas. Not to mention emotional music video scenes, thanks to which we come back to a given creation more often. Or the Peacemaker intro. The guy has a good hand and taste in song selection. It's no different with CC. Starting with the loud intro, which perfectly fits the mood of the series (several times I expected it as much as the first notes of the opening/ending while watching the anime - if it's done right, the atmosphere gets an extra point) and stimulates our adrenaline. The soundtrack is quite coherent and uses lesser-known bands from my part of the world (Ukraine, the Balkans, generally eastern culture and some Gypsy vibes). I haven't checked out all the songs, but a large portion of the songs were provided by the band Gogol Bordello (a name inspired by the Russian-Ukrainian poet Nikolai Gogol and the brothel).The song selection is a bit worse than GotG, but GotG is God level and CC is just great.

To sum up, CC is a very good start to the new DC universe. The series apparently enjoys high viewership, but I haven't been able to find any statistics. However, I saw praise from critics - they praised the voice acting, storytelling and the quality of the animation. 40 reviewers on RT rated the S1 CC 95%, while over 1,000 fan reviews rated it 80%. In my opinion, they are adequate to his level. While researching news today, I saw that DC has given a higher priority to the second season. There is no chance of a continuation this year, but 2026 is rather certain. My CC rating is 8/10.

Jeśli znacie twórczość reżysera trylogii Guardians of the Galaxy, Peacemaker oraz The Suicide Squad, to wiecie czego się mniej więcej spodziewać. Tak jak w powyższych dziełach, dostaliśmy historię z mało znanymi postaciami z uniwersum DC / Marvela. Takimi z problematyczną przeszłością, trudnościami w nawiązywaniu relacji i pokonywaniu własnych wad. A do tego trochę krwi, edgy żartów, zabawnych i zwariowanych sytuacji, by nie było zbyt poważnie.

Gdy włączałem 1 odcinek, myślałem że moja partnerka będzie narzekała. Lubi świat DC, oglądała filmy (i nie tylko) z Batmanem, Supermanem, kojarzy niektóre mniej rozpoznawalne postacie, ale nie jest taką fanką jak ja. Jakże byłem zdziwiony, gdy Asia chciała bym włączył kolejne odcinki bardziej niż ja. W ciągu jednej nocy obejrzeliśmy niemal wszystkie. Zostały nam dwa, które zostawiłem na inny termin. Filmy które reżyserował lub aktywnie produkował, mają różny poziom, ale trudno im zarzucić, że są słabe. Widać też, że chętnie korzysta z wolnej ręki jaką dostał od ludzi trzymających władzę w gigantycznym, medialnym konglomeracie. Niektórzy zdziwią się - "co on mówi? Gunn ma wolną rękę, ale tworzy znowu to samo!" I przyznam im rację, niemniej to że James robi znowu to samo, nie znaczy że nie ma wolnej ręki. Korzysta z mniej znanych postaci, praktycznie nie widzimy tych znanych, którymi można byłoby pozyskać nowych widzów, sam sobie wybiera trudniejszą drogę. Widać że kieruje się podobną zasadą, co przy tworzeniu filmów - daje szansę mało znanym.

Chciałbym powiedzieć, że dzięki temu dostaniemy serial z dopracowaną formułę, ale trochę minąłbym się z prawdą. Aczkolwiek, pomijając jedną, istotną kwestię, nie mam większych powodów do narzekań. Jest to główny wątek. Nie jest to olbrzymie rozczarowanie, bo mniej więcej tak wyobrażałem sobie finał po pierwszych odcinkach, ale też nie ma co udawać, że nie popełniono błędu. Czy mi to przeszkadzało? Powiem tak, gdyby popełniono taki sam błąd w serialu np. o Supermanie, byłbym zły. Z racji, że nie znam tych bohaterów, jest mi to kompletnie obojętne. Wstęp do serialu, to pokłosie wydarzeń z filmu The Suicide Squad. Z uwagi na skandal polityczny, rząd USA podpisał ustawę na mocy której, służby specjalne nie mogą korzystać z zasobów ludzkich, czy coś w tym stylu. Ale nikt nie napisał słowa o nie-ludziach. Z wyłączeniem Ricka Flaga.

Pierwszym zadaniem nowej jednostki specjalnej, jest ochrona władczyni nowego państwa. Potem dochodzi do pewnego zwrotu akcji, ale nie ma on większego znaczenia. Ważni są bohaterowie i ich historia, a ich misja stanowi jedynie dodatek, czy raczej, pełni rolę areny na której można ich przedstawić. Główną bohaterką wydaje się być Bride, postać wyraźnie inspirowana filmem z 1935 na podstawie książki Mary Shelley (autorki Franksteina). Mimo, że poznajemy ją jako buntowniczą chłopczycę, to szybko się przekonujemy, że wizerunek suki, to osłona przed jej zranionymi uczuciami. Posługuje się bronią palną, ale umie też latać (lub szybować, jak Knuckles w Sonic) i mocno dać po twarzy. Głosu użyczyła jej Indira Varma, bardzo doświadczona brytyjska aktorka.

Jej największą przyjaciółką jest Nina Mazursky, która przemawia do nas głosem Zoë Chao. Rybka jest niemal kompletnym przeciwieństwem Bride - nie przeklina, stara się unikać przemocy, ufa innym i chce im pomóc. Jak to powiedziała Amanda Waller, stanowi serce tej drużyny. Polecam unikać spoilerów.

W rolę Frankensteina wcielił się sam David Harbour. Nie jest członkiem Task Force M, ale można go określić mianem "tymczasowego sojusznika". Pojawia się w niektórych odcinkach i służy za siłowe wsparcie. Polubiłem jego relację z Bride. Pozornie jest prosta, zbyt częste powtórzenie kilku żartów nie pomaga zmienić tego wrażenia, ale z każdym kolejnym odcinkiem, gdy coraz lepiej poznajemy perspektywy obu postaci, widzimy że taka nie jest. Gunn po raz kolejny pokazał, że jest zajebisty, jeśli chodzi o pisanie tego typu relacji i problemów.

Ojciec Ricka Flaga jest jedyną ludzką postacią w tym zespole. Nie różni się za bardzo od swojego syna, co najwyżej jest trochę grzeczniejszy i spokojniejszy. W jego przypadku usłyszycie Franka Grillo.

Jednym z moich ulubieńców jest Dr Phosphorus. Wynika to z jego mocy i bezczelnego, aczkolwiek honorowego charakteru. Wydaje mi się, że jest głównym damage dealerem w tej drużynie. Trudno mi coś o nim powiedzieć bez spoilerowania, więc ograniczę się do tego, że dogadałby się z Rickiem z Rick & Morty. Obaj naukowcy są tak samo bezpośredni, sadystyczni i mają miękkie podbrzusze w postaci rodziny.

Weasel pełni podobną rolę, co Nina, tylko w trochę inny sposób. Można powiedzieć, że to maskotka drużyny. G.I Robot to z kolei artefakt z czasów 2 wojny światowej. Maszyna stworzona do mordowania nazistów i nie tylko. Żarty z ich udziałem piszą się same. Sean Gunn użyczył głosu obu postaciom.

Zobaczymy też Batmana (bardzo dobre cameo, adekwatne do tej postaci), jednego z jego przeciwników oraz postacie, które poznaliśmy w 1 sezonie Peacemaker oraz The Suicide Squad - czyli Amandę Waller i jej pomagierów.

Jak napisałem we wstępie, to kolejna opowieść o tym, jak grupa wyrzutków próbuje sobie poradzić ze swoimi traumami, a jednocześnie znaleźć sens życia. Ograniczyłem się do minimalistycznego opisu postaci, bo nie chcę Wam zepsuć zabawy. Ich wątki nie zaskoczyły mnie oryginalnością lub nowatorskim podejściem, to po prostu solidnie napisane story-arce. Jednakże gdybym wiedział co stanie się w późniejszych odcinkach, wiele bym stracił. Niektóre wątki były wzruszające, inne śmieszne, parę z nich zmusiło mnie do myślenia i spojrzenia na dany problem z innej perspektywy. Z uwagi na to, że to już nie pierwszy raz, jak James Gunn przedstawia scenariusz w ten sposób, trudno mi go ocenić. Mimo, że to różne uniwersa, to z uwagi na reżysera i jego styl, wszystko zlewa mi się w jedną całość. Moja partnerka z kolei odrazu polubiła bohaterów. Nie stała się ich fanką, ale po kilku latach znajomości widzę, kiedy coś jej się naprawdę podoba, a kiedy jest jedynie tymczasową sympatią. Niestety nie mogę ocenić jakości oryginalnego dubbingu, bo z uwagi na preferencje Asi, oglądaliśmy z polską wersją językową. O dziwo polski dubbing jest naprawdę dobry i zabawny.

Drugą i trzecią zaletą tego serialu, jest żonglowanie typami animacji / stylami rysowania oraz montaż. Może nie jest to najnowszy animowany Miles Morales, ale twórcy wykorzystali różne style animacji - np. niektóre sceny są wykonane w konwencji anime, a inne przypominały mi stare kreskówki. Nie znam się na kresce i animacji, mogę tylko powiedzieć, niczym ignorant, że niektóre sceny były tak ładne, że można się nimi zachwycić. Widać też, że Gunn nie kłamie mówiąc, że interesuje się Japońską animacją. Jest zbyt dużo klisz i ujęć, które są wymysłem Japończyków (a jeśli nie są ich, to moim zdaniem oni je spopularyzowali). Nie znam się też na montażu, więc ograniczę się do paru zdań. Pamiętacie tę niesławną scenę z leczeniem skóry sir Joraha Mormonta z Game of Thrones? Tak, mówię o tej obrzydliwej, której nie da się zapomnieć. A konkretnie jej finałowy etap, gdy przechodzimy z sali operacyjnej do karczmy. Takich "ładnych" i płynnych przejść, jest jeszcze więcej w CC i są one równie kreatywne.

Dużą zaletą twórczości Gunna, jest duży nacisk na ścieżkę dźwiękową. Muzyka była jednym z najważniejszych filarów sukcesu GotG - mnóstwo memów, komentarzy, wpisów w internecie (darmowa kampania reklama dla Disneya), wyświetlenia trailerów, dobra muzyka która ściągnie do kin dodatkowych widzów spoza docelowej grupy docelowej. Nie wspominając o emocjonalnych, teledyskowych scenach, dzięki którym częściej wracamy do danego tworu. Albo intro Peacemakera. Facet ma dobrą rękę i gust do doboru piosenek. Nie inaczej jest w przypadku CC. Począwszy od głośnego intro, które świetnie pasuje do nastroju serialu (kilka razy oczekiwałem go tak samo, jak pierwszych nut openingu / endingu oglądając anime - jeśli to się zrobi dobrze, to klimacik dostaje dodatkowy punkt) i pobudza naszą adrenalinę. Soundtrack jest dość spójny i wykorzystuje mniej znane zespoły pochodzące z mojej części świata (Ukraina, Bałkany, generalnie wschodnia kultura i trochę Cygańskich klimatóww). Nie sprawdzałem wszystkich piosenek, ale dużą część piosenek dostarczył zespół Gogol Bordello (nazwa zainspirowana Rosyjsko-Ukraińskim poetą Nikołajem Gogolem i burdelem). Dobór piosenek jest nieco gorszy niż w GotG, ale GotG to poziom Boski, a CC jest po prostu świetne.

Reasumując, CC stanowi bardzo dobry początek nowego uniwersum DC. Serial cieszy się podobno wysoką oglądalnością, ale nie zdołałem znaleźć statystyk. Za to widziałem pochwały od krytyków - chwalili voice acting, storytelling oraz jakość animacji. 40 recenzentów na RT oceniło S1 CC na 95%, natomiast ponad 1000 opinii fanów oceniło go na 80%. Wg mnie są adekwatne do jego poziomu. Zbierając dzisiaj materiały do wpisów o newsach, zobaczyłem że DC nadało wyższy priorytet drugiemu sezonowi. W tym roku nie ma szans na kontynuację, ale rok 2026 jest raczej pewny. Moja ocena CC to 8/10.
