This time I will comment on a 2003 movie called The Last Samurai.

En esta ocasión les comentaré sobre una película del año 2003 llamada el ultimo samurai.

The film is set in the last century and tells the story of retired captain Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise), a man haunted by the horrors of battle and currently in financial trouble and addicted to alcohol.

Algren receives a good offer to go to Japan and train an army of inexperienced peasants to confront a small group of renegade samurai, commanded by Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe) who disagree with the policies of Emperor Neiji (Schichinosuke Nakamura).

La película se sitúa en el siglo pasado y narra la historia del capitán retirado Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise), un hombre atormentado por los horrores vividos en las batallas y que actualmente se encuentra con problemas financieros y entregado al alcohol.
Algren recibe una buena oferta para ir a Japón y entrenar un ejército de campesinos sin experiencia para enfrentar a un pequeño grupo de samurais renegados, comandados por Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe) que están en desacuerdo con las políticas del emperador Neiji (Schichinosuke Nakamura).

He confronts the samurai army but, although they were outnumbered and fought with swords, bows and arrows, they are victorious and take Captain Algren prisoner.

Katsumoto takes Captain Algren to the village where his sister Taka (Koyuki Kato) lives, who is in charge of taking care of him as a guest and not as a prisoner. Little by little he adapts to the Japanese language and culture of the samurai. From that moment on, he begins to see Japanese culture from another angle that will put him at a crossroads where he will have to decide which path to follow.

Se enfrenta al ejército samurai pero, a pesar de que éstos eran inferiores en número y combatían con espadas, arcos y flechas, salen victoriosos y toman al capitán Algren como prisionero
Katsumoto lleva al capitán Algren a la Aldea donde vive su hermana Taka (Koyuki Kato), quien es la encargada de atenderlo como un huésped y no como un prisionero. Poco a poco va adaptándose al idioma y a la cultura japonesa de los samurais. A partir de ese momento comienza a ver a la cultura japonesa desde otro ángulo que lo pondrá al frente de una encrucijada donde deberá decidir el camino a seguir.

From my point of view it is a true classic of world cinema, since it involves several genres: action, romance and drama, masterfully intertwined, making the viewer a protagonist in the story.

The locations and photography were carefully managed to give the realism that the scenes required. Beautiful landscapes, with plantations and a country atmosphere that resembles the Japan of the last century to the maximum.

Desde mi punto de vista es un verdadero clásico de la cinematografía mundial, ya que involucra varios géneros: acción, romance y drama, entrelazados con maestría haciendo del espectador un protagonista más dentro de la historia.
Las locaciones y la fotografía fueron ciuidadosamente manejadas para darle el realismo que las escenas requería,. Paisajes hermosos, con plantaciones y un ambiente campestre que asemejan al máximo al Japón del siglo pasado.

The 154 minutes of the film leave no time for boredom, on the contrary, as the story progresses it becomes more interesting because, like Captain Algren, we learn a little more about Japanese culture and begin to see the villains as people capable of thinking and feeling like any other human being.

The film clearly shows us what courage and honor mean and how a person can suddenly change his or her way of thinking and acting just by getting to know the other person personally.

This teaches us not to make prejudices about someone without even knowing them, which is very common in our society.

Los 154 minutos que dura el film no dejan tiempo para el aburrimiento, al contrario, a medida que avanza la historia se va haciendo más interesante porque, al igual que el capitán Algren, vamos aprendiendo un poco más de la cultura japonesa y comenzamos a ver a los villanos como personas capaces de pensar y de sentir como cualquier ser humano.
La película nos muestra claramente lo que significa el valor y el honor y de qué manera una persona puede cambiar súbitamente su forma de pensar y de actuar tan solo conociendo personalmente al otro.
Esto nos enseña a no hacer prejuicios de alguien sin siquiera conocerlo, cosa muy común en nuestra sociedad

To conclude I must tell you that this kind of movies where so much care is taken with the small details, are the ones we appreciate, even if they are not as successful as others.

Here the performances of Cruise and Watanabe stand out, but many others in the cast also stand out, as well as the amount of extras that were used to represent the bloody battles and that bring a lot of realism to the film.

Another thing I loved was the costumes and the beautiful scenery that took me to travel to Japan and experience its culture and beliefs.

Para concluir debo decirles que este tipo de películas donde se cuidan tanto los pequeños detalles, son las que apreciamos, aunque no sean tan exitosas como otras.
Aquí sobresalen las actuaciones de Cruise y Watanabe, pero también destacan muchos otros en el reparto, al igual que la cantidad de extras que se utilizaron para representar las cruentas batallas y que brindan mucho realismo al film.
Otra cosa que me encantó fue el vestuario y los hermosos paisajes que me llevaron a viajar a Japón y a vivir su cultura y sus creencias.
