Hair transplant adventure in Vietnam part 1

So as I mentioned before some pictures of me turned up on the bowling website and I had no idea that my hair loss had become so profound. Some people handle this sort of thing gracefully and just shave their heads or deal with it but I decided to go another path. I decided to go the extra mile, or in this case 700km, and got get some hair transplants from the back of my head inserted into the top and front of my head.

There has been a relatively major hiccup though and it is one that has me quite a bit upset, because it may end up meaning that the entire procedure cannot take place and this trip will have been a wasted one.

As it turns out, I have high blood pressure, and this could be because of a lot of different reasons such as stress, the fact that I drink daily, and the fact that I use a tobacco product called snus that is like smoking cigarettes but without the cancer. I was completely unaware of the fact that I have high blood pressure because I rarely go to doctors unless there is something seriously wrong with me.

They wont do the procedure if you have high blood pressure because there can be complications with the anesthesia which in very rare cases, could be fatal. I would obviously rather be bald than dead so I guess it is good that they take these precautions.

I really don't like seeing these images of myself because like I said before, I was unaware that my crown had become so profound over the years. However, this is my life now. Those dots you see on my head is where they plan to put the transplanted hairs, which they remove from the back of your head. The hairs on the back of almost anyone's head are basically indestructible, and that is why your great uncle Bob may have ONLY those hairs remaining. The thing is that most of us cut those hairs off when we get a haircut anyway. I don't know why they are so strong but that does seem to be the case.

The other area where I am struggling is the same place that a lot of other people do as well. This is very common with male pattern baldness and it gets worse as you get older. It's just a part of life. Sometimes I think it would have been better to just shave it all off and deal with it, but since I have the money and want to do it, I decided to give it a go.

Then they do some wizardry to estimate the square centimeters that they will need to cover and this determines how many hairs they are going to have to take from the back of your head to move to other areas. If it is sounding like a rather gruesome process that's probably because it actually is exactly that.

For whatever reason, they cannot put you completely under for this procedure and they only use local anesthetic shots to completely numb your head. Then they have some really advanced tools that was designed by some guy in Belgium that is able to drill just 0.6 millimeters into a hair follicle without destroying it. They then suspend this in some sort of magic liquid that keeps it alive and move them, one by one, to other parts of your head.

This, in a shell, is how I understand the process. It all might be in vain though because if this medicine that they gave me that is called telmisartan and amlodipine doesn't work I wont be able to do the procedure at all. This medicine is something that is prescribed to people with hypertension and other heart and kidney related problems. It's quite cheap and widely available although it probably costs hundreds of dollars in USA because your the medical system there sucks. Here it was just over $3 for a week's worth.

I may have actually given them a false positive though because of the fact that I was completely oblivious about the fact that there were some qualifications that you have to pass in order to be eligible for the procedure. I figured that if you had the money to pay for it that they would basically do it for anyone.

This is my first foray into elective surgery so I guess you learn these things as you go along.

I will readily admit that I am not the most innocent person when it comes to health. I drink more days than not and a lot of those days I drink to excess. I have snus in my mouth from basically the moment I wake up until the time I go to sleep, I regularly take Ambien or Valium for sleeping, and any time I have a headache or really just any ache I take Tramadol, which is a synthetic opiate. I do exercise quite a lot but to say that I am healthy would be a massive lie.

I'm really hopeful that the operation can get the green-light tomorrow because if it doesn't, then this trip will have been a complete waste of time. Well I guess one good thing can come out of it, I will now be more mindful of my blood pressure because that isn't something that I have really paid any attention to at any point in my life.

You have to try as much as possible to avoid those things that you feel makes you unhealthy. Eat balanced diet and sometimes fast, take some fruits. And, most importantly try see a doctor.

I wish you good health

yeah, I don't go see a doctor nearly as much as I should, that is for sure.

My brother experienced mild hair loss this year, but thankfully he was able to take action and now it is resolved. His suspicion is that he got too stressed causing that to happen. It's really important to build a healthy lifestyle especially when our age increases. We can't certainly avoid any disease or health problems as they're part of nature but at least we can lessen.

I wish you a successful operation and fast hair recovery!

I found out too late that getting some sort of topical solution once you start to notice hair loss can actually help a lot. At least where I live this product isn't even that expensive so I'm kicking myself for not starting to use it when I began to notice hair loss a few years ago.

avatar

Topical solution can treat the symptoms but not the root cause, I think you should dig deeper what's causing you hair loss in the first place.

A plant based diet is good for high blood pressure. I know people who have had really good results on it. However, if you are a carnivore, it might be hard.

avatar

I need a lot of protein in my diet but I suppose I could make a choice: lose the muscle mass or keep my hair. I have no issue with vegetarian food but it's so tough to get high protein out of all of that.

avatar

have a think - but I know people personally who have lowered their blood pressure - and that is only being on plant based diet like a week - so you could always just try it for a week - anyway, my two cents!

Well, finding about your blood pressure this way is a lot better than finding out later on down the road when it may have already caused a problem. I can't help but wonder if you'd rather have been living in Thailand for a procedure like this, I would assume more expensive there but better standard of care too.

However I guess we play the cards we are dealt, you're in Vietnam, far better than Cambodia for any kind of elective surgeries. Have you discussed this with Nadi? I wonder how a canine would feel if missing a patch of fur on their noggin? Hope things work out, these posts are giving me more of a glimpse of you than I've ever had.

Note - I've finally got some free time to read posts, so I am updating myself via your blog posts in reverse order.

I have discussed it with Nadi but I think I might have accidentally snuck in the word "walk" or "treat" and well, that just triggers the automatic excitement reaction.

I'm pretty sure that Nadi could lose all of her hair and she wouldn't care at all provided that "poopy walks", "treatie pies," and "yum yums" remained a part of her daily experience.

Oh to be a dog with a good owner, what a life that would be.

I see there are many medicines that stimulate hair growth. You can try one type. Or go to hospitals and they will advise you on these issues.

Welcome to the club! I have been on blood pressure meds for a couple of years now. It's basically just a water pill and it makes me have to pee every half hour for the first half of the day, but it does the trick! I hope things work out for you. As I have said before, I just shave my head, but I don't think I could be considered graceful at all! :)

avatar

Yep, I don't even know where to get my blood pressure checked in this city. I don't know if it is still that way but when I still lived in USA I remember there being free blood pressure check stations in almost every supermarket.

avatar

I think they make you pay a quarter now, but they are still there. My wife and I have a digital cuff we bought on Amazon that we keep at home. As you will see in my comment on your recent post, there are times the doctor wants us to check our pressure at home and report to them.

avatar

I have a similar hair loss. Although I have many friends who have had the operation, I do not have enough motivation.

avatar

well if you think you ever will, the doctors have recommended getting involved with a product that will maintain the follicle strength that you currently have. Something like this is what the doctors here all recommend.

avatar

Well good luck. You don't hang around when making these decisions and hopefully they can do it and the blood pressure issue is not too serious. A blessing in disguise maybe as now you know you have high blood pressure and you can fix that.

avatar

yeah, the high blood pressure thing was a bit of a shock to me because I live a relatively healthy lifestyle, but according to my nurse sister, my readings aren't really that bad and she thinks the clinic is being overly cautious because of some sort of liability issue.

avatar

I have not met a person yet with transplanted hair. I was so interested in knowing more about it as I read your post now. I hope you are well and keep safe always.

avatar

well 10 years ago the process was not very good. Scientific and technological advances have made it significantly more effective than it has been in the past. The only problem now is that it is quite expensive.
