Wars...still

glabnibbletgibberthumbercuntterdallenbabberpoolertippy.jpg

When I was eight years old I had no concept that forty six years later I'd be buying Star Wars episodes on BlueRay and getting excited about it...but I am.

- Me -

A short time ago I purchased the box set of Star Wars episodes one to six on BlueRay and felt pretty good about the purchase.

Having first seen the movie Star Wars as a little eight year old kid with my dad, a memory I cherish, I've been hooked. What I wasn't happy about is the set was not complete as episodes seven, eight and nine (the latest movies in the saga) were not included in the set and the store didn't have the three disc set in stock. I ordered it of course.

It finally arrived last week delivered to my door to the fucken post office because I was not home when the delivery guy turned up and I wasn't able to get there to pick it up as I've been travelling for work...but yesterday I went there and got it. Crisis averted.

Over the years, the movies have gotten better different mainly through the advent of CGI and these latest three are pretty decent indeed but I crossed out better because I don't think they are, not generally anyway. Sure they look better on the surface, as do the two spin-off movies Solo and Rogue One due to the CGI, but there's a certain...umm...comfort that comes from watching the older movies and their (often terrible) special effects and questionable acting - sometimes movies these days can seem too polished I think. Of course, the eight year me thought those effects (everything about the movie) was the best thing I'd ever seen.

I'm pleased to have the final three movies and look forward to watching them however lament the good old days when actors needed to act and when special effects didn't all happen on a computer screen. This is not to say there's no skill in CGI, there certainly is, but it's less human and more computer and I'm an old-school guy. What I love is that I still love these movies and how they make me feel young at heart, excited and how they make my imagination work just like they did all those years ago.

I’m with you on that man. The art of making a movie is dead and it’s a damn shame. I think the last great movie set was lord of the ring in the late 90’a early 2000’s. That was epic, in both senses of the word.

The old Star Wars movie sets were so much better and cooler than the new bullshit CGI they put out today. There’s no personality to it, no feeling that you could be right there with them since they looked as real as they were with enhancements to the shot placement and stuff.

I’ve got such good memories watching Star Wars at my grandfathers house in his spare bedroom, which was my moms old room, and it being on an old CRT screen with VHS tapes. Those were the damn days man! Empire strikes back on that thing is still fresh in my memory, thanks for bringing me back a few decades.

In the old Star Wars movies I love looking at the sets and props and seeing every day items used to make them. It's funny and cool to see something; I'm like, there's a length of plastic agriculture pipe! You know? It sort of takes me back to when I'd use stuff as a kid to make a spaceship or fort or whatever.

The new movies are cool, I mean it's incredible what they do, but I lament the loss of (human) ingenuity in set design in deference to CGI.

(Edited)

Yeah I loved seeing the everyday stuff they put in the movies. So many of the droids and areas they are in have things we had in our house it was cool.

The CGI is ok for flying and stuff but I hate when they do it for the fight scenes. I think revenge of the sith it was the most egregious example of how ridiculous it was and not at all realistic. It was pretty bad lol

avatar

Oh yeah, the droids are a great example of them having used every day things to put them together - I think it'd be a great job, the design and creation of stuff like that.

avatar

Best Star Wars stuff I've seen was Andor.

Yeah, that's Disney+ isn't it? I don't have it and have been resisting the urge to get it...how many streaming services can one man have you know?

avatar

I don't like Disney generally, so avoid supporting them financially.
I'll login under my sister's name though. That I can do :)

violence only create more violence, even just watching it

When the eagle takes to the skies, the tortoise walks the land in consternation.

avatar

When we bought our surround sound Star Wars was the first movie to be played. F-ing shook the damn walls. Makes me want to grab a damn sword, attach some glow sticks to it waste some bucket heads.

avatar

Haha, glow stick light sabres...might have been there done that...more than once!

I used to have a really great surround sound system and loved it! I don't have one now, moved house and the new one doesn't have a theatre room which sucks. Surround sound really adds a cool element to movies. I remember watching Gone in 60 Seconds with surround sound and if you haven't you must. ✅

avatar

Mine is a really simple one. It is just a sound bar and subwoofer, so technically not really surround sound. However for our small living room, it is MORE than enough. I'll have to add Gone in 60 Seconds to my watch list.

avatar

It's a good movie and those car chase scenes are good with the volume up...better than a flashbang thrown into a room. (Almost.) 🤐

avatar

Star wars still did a pretty amazing job given the technology that was available at the time. I hope you enjoy watching them!

avatar

I agree, it was cool and for the eight year old me I thought it was the best thing ever.

avatar

I think my biggest complaint is that at the end of Return of the Jedi they swapped out the original Anakin for Hayed :P

avatar

I got a bit put off by the 8th movie, and didn't really watch the last one. I've read a lot of bad reviews about it, so I never really felt the need to watch it. I really like the original three, and the prequels seemed better as time went by. Just gotta skip forward during the Jar Jar parts haha.

avatar

Reviews. Yeah, that keeps some people away from things but not me, I like to make my own mind up on things based on the experience.

avatar

Hi Galen, I'm old school too; Star Wars left a big impression on me as almost a teenager. Of the new movies, only Rogue One: A Star Wars Story seems like a great movie to me.

Today, at 55 years old, I am also still excited about the world of Star Wars. A couple of days ago I bought myself a small Lego figure for the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Lego Star Wars.

Best regards.

avatar

I liked Rogue one and have a little bit of a crush on the actor who played Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) as well. Lol.

55? I didn't know that, a year older than me or thereabouts. 1970 was a good year.

Have you heard this? So funny.

avatar

I didn't know it, now I'm going for a walk, in a few hours I'll tell you something, and if that's my age, a great age.

I didn't know your age either, but I thought it might be similar, I think few people can understand what it was like to watch Star Wars for a child born in 1970.

avatar

Oh.. It really depends on what we are used to watch.😊 I like the CGI output on the movies. 😄

avatar

I remember when I saw the first films, I found them fascinating! My brother is a super super super fan of anything to do with Stars Wars.

From the new movies I like the costumes, make-up, but it's true that a lot is done by computer, I know it's a big job, because I studied some 3D design, a lot of work and hard, but I prefer the traditional performances.

I don't know if you saw it, but I saw The Mandalorian and I liked it a lot. .... well my brother put it on and i watch it hahaha but it's not bad.... it's the second time he's put the series on.

avatar

I've not seen the Mandalorian but I've heard it's ok. I'll watch it sooner or later.

avatar

It's very good and I like your phrase.

Sometimes the nice simple stories are the most fun.

Seriously it's been how long and the nine aren't a box set whut o_O

Now I'm wondering if we have all of them, definitely got the original trilogy but I don't think J liked the other ones very much.

it's less human and more computer

Owch.

avatar

Nine movies yeah, it's a lot huh? Not as many as The Fast and Furious which I think are up to movie 87!

avatar

I always figure it's fine and doesn't matter how many as long as there's still a story to tell but every now and again I wonder about some of these stories x_x

avatar

They could save on production costs by using the exact same footage from the first movie and dubbing new dialogue over the top over and over.

avatar

I kind of want to see how that would look now because it could either be brilliant or more likely terrible XD

Do you think there would be people that would watch it and think it's amazing anyway?

avatar

More likely more terrible. Lol.

And yeah, I'm sure there's people out there who would dig it. (I'm not one of them.)

avatar

What I love is that I still love these movies and how they make me feel young at heart

Nostalgia and memory of youth 🙂
