Monkey Man: John Wick but is poor [ENG-ESP]

I had read about this movie on Twitter about 1 month ago, in that tweet it was mentioned that it was a John Wick style action movie, comes with action and good choreography, a movie that although it touches on certain social-political issues in India, it is still an action movie whose main plot is the revenge of the protagonist, which is played by Dav Patel, which also, besides being the main character, Dave Patel plays the director and screenwriter, this being his first work as director and although it is a movie, somewhat simple, I think it is quite well done. I remember seeing Dav Patel for the first time in the excellent series Skins, then in the very good movie Slumdog Millionaire and also in the infamous Live Action adaptation of The Last Airbender from 2010. After that I lost track of this actor until I found out about Monkey Man, the movie I'll talk a bit about today. I also did some research on this actor and there is a movie that came out three years ago called The Green Knight, which has very good reviews, so it is the next movie I will see.

But going into the subject of Monkey Man, it is a pretty good action movie, there are not as many action moments as in the John Wick movies, but the camera work, as well as especially the choreography work is pretty good, being this for now the best action movie so far this year 2024. Our protagonist makes his living in "illegal" wrestling fights where he takes the role of Monkey Man, wearing a monkey mask, but unlike wrestling, these are real fights and after each battle "Monkey Man" is totally wounded, He does all this in order to get some money and buy a weapon which he will use to kill the murderer of his mother, but also, he aims to enter the establishments where his "enemy" hangs out and thus have an easier opportunity to kill him, since the murderer of his mother is the head of the police of the country (or something like that). The whole conflict starts when the police begin to evict a group of people to take away their land, so that the repression is so strong and violent that they end up killing and burning many people, among those people is the mother of Monkey Man.

Seeing his mother die at a very young age and in such a violent and cruel way, Monkey Man grows up with a thirst for revenge for her death. It is a film that I later found out that besides having a low budget, which I didn't really notice since the film looks pretty good and has really good scenery and visual quality, the actor/director Dev Patel during the shooting of this film broke and hurt himself, breaking his hand and dislocating the man, but the most surprising fact is that Dev Patel didn't say anything about his condition so as not to affect the production of the film, showing the importance and dedication that this actor had for his film. Due to one of the main social-economic and political themes of this film, which shows the power of a religious leader in different areas of government, which comes to have so much control and power that sends the police to kill people to keep their land, this film was criticized and banned in India. Monkey Man is an excellent movie, an action movie without too much depth, perfect for those people who just want to see fights, shootings and violence.

Había leído sobre esta película en Twitter hace como 1 mes aproximadamente, en ese tweet se mencionaba que era una película de acción al estilo John Wick, llega de acción y buena coreografía, una película que aunque toca ciertos temas socio-políticos de la India, no deja de ser una película de acción cuyo principal argumento es la venganza del protagonista, el cual está interpretado por Dav Patel, el cual también, además de ser el personaje principal, Dave Patel hace de director y de guionista, siendo este su primer trabajo como director y aunque es una película, algo sencilla, me parece que está bastante bien hecha. Recuerdo haber visto a Dav Patel por primera vez en la excelente serie Skins, luego en la muy buena película Slumdog Millionaire y también en la infame adaptación Live Action de The Last Airbender del 2010. Luego de ahí he perdido el rastro de este actor hasta que me entere de Monkey Man, la película de la cual hablaré un poco hoy. También me puse a investigar un poco sobre este actor y hay una película que se estrenó hace tres años llamada The Green Knight, la cual tiene muy buena crítica, por lo que es la próxima película que veré.

Pero entrando en el tema de Monkey Man, es una película de acción bastante buena, no hay tantos momentos de acción como en las películas de John Wick, pero el trabajo de cámara, así como especialmente el trabajo de coreografía está bastante bien, siendo esta por ahora la mejor película de acción de lo que va de este año 2024. Nuestro protagonista se gana la vida en peleas de lucha libre “ilegales” donde toma el papel de Monkey Man, portando consigo una máscara de mono, pero a diferencia de las lucha libre, estas si son peleas reales y después de cada batalla “Monkey Man” queda totalmente herido, todo esto lo hace para poder conseguir algo de dinero y comprar un arma la cual utilizará para poder matar al asesino de su madre, pero también, tiene como objetivo adentrarse en los establecimientos donde se la pasa su “enemigo” y así poder tener una oportunidad más fácil de poder matarlo, ya que el asesino de su madre es el jefe de la policía del país (o algo así). Todo el conflicto inicia cuando la policía empieza a desalojar a un grupo de personas para poder quitarles sus terrenos, de tal forma que la represión es tan fuerte y violenta, que terminan asesinando y quemando a mucha gente, dentro de esas personas se encuentra la madre de Monkey Man.

Viendo morir a su madre desde muy joven y de una forma tan violenta y cruel, Monkey Man crece con sed de venganza por su muerte. Es una película que luego me enteré que además de contar con poco presupuesto, el cual yo realmente no me di cuenta de eso ya que la película se ve bastante bien y cuenta con escenografía y calidad visual realmente buena, el actor/director Dev Patel durante el rodaje de esta película se rompió y se lastimó, llegando a romperse la mano y se disloco el hombre, pero el dato más sorprendente es que Dev Patel no dijo nada de su condición para no afectar la producción de la película, notándose mucho la importancia y dedicación que tenía este actor por su película. Debido a uno de los temas principales socio-económico y políticos de esta película, donde nos muestra que el poder de un líder religioso en distintos ámbitos del gobierno, el cual llega a tener tanto control y poder que manda a la policía a matar personas para quedarse con sus terrenos, esta película fue durante criticada y prohibida en la India. Monkey Man, es una película excelente, una película de acción sin demasiada profundidad, perfecta para aquellas personas que solo queremos ver peleas, disparos y violencia.
