The prequel to the saga of The Hunger Games: A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is a movie that I was waiting for it for a long time, since I am a fan of the franchise, one of the best I have seen in the history of big screen productions, next to Harry Potter. In one of my free time last month, where we know that many of us were on vacation for the celebration of Christmas, I was looking for what to see, when I saw this film that I wanted to see for a long time, but I was looking for it with the best quality, until I finally saw it and today I bring you my opinion of what I thought of it.

With the success obtained by the saga of The Hunger Games, I must say that I did not have such high expectations, simply because I have seen how some of the prequels that have been released from other successful franchises have failed, as is the case of the magical world of Harry Potter and the new Fantastic Beasts movies, although I had some hope, so I decided to give it a chance. This movie Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was released on November 17, 2023, a drama, action, adventure and science fiction film based on the story of The Hunger Games, years before the universe we already know from the previous films of the saga. It was also directed by Francis Lawrence, a well-known filmmaker who would undoubtedly do a great job at the helm of the movie.

Plot

The length of the movie is two hours and 37 minutes, a feature film as we are used to from this franchise of The Hunger Games. In this time we are told the story of Coriolanus Snow, who was the fearsome president of Panem and who caused terror in all the districts of The Hunger Games universe. We meet a fairly young Snow, 18 years old, and who had a quite different attitude than we saw in the previous films, so I was pleasantly surprised, since I never read the books, I did not know where the story would go, although Coriolanus was changing little by little, as the film progressed, so we can realize the person who became and why many of his terrible actions, although in the end nothing justifies the means.

bviously, the story focuses on the hunger games, the tributes and the mentors that at that time, for the tenth game, were used the young people of Panem from the Capitol and not the winners as we saw in the story we were told after these events of Ballad of songbirds and snakes. One of those mentors was Snow, a young man from a well known family from the Capitol, but who were not going through the best economic times, so Coriolanus would try to get his family ahead, put it back in a good position. Well, if you have seen The Hunger Games, you will know if he succeeded or not and even more seeing the despicable person he became. These games really transform people and it is demonstrated in each of the productions.

La precuela de la saga de Los juegos del hambre: Balada de pájaros cantores y serpientes es una película que la estaba esperando desde hace mucho tiempo, ya que soy fanático de la franquicia, una de las mejores que he visto en la historia de las producciones de la pantalla grande, junto a Harry Potter. En uno de mis tiempos libres del mes pasado, donde sabemos que estábamos muchos de vacaciones por la celebración de la Navidad, estaba buscando que ver, cuando vi este filme que quería ver desde hace tiempo, pero estaba buscándola con la mejor calidad, hasta que finalmente la vi y hoy les traigo mi opinión de que me pareció.


Con el éxito obtenido por la saga de Los juegos del hambre, debo decir que no tenía las expectativas tan altas, simplemente porque he visto como alguna de las precuelas que han sacado de otras franquicias exitosas han fracasado, como es el caso del mundo mágico de Harry Potter y las nuevas películas de Animales fantásticos, aunque tenía algo de esperanza, así que decidí darle una oportunidad. Esta película Balada de pájaros cantores y serpientes se estrenó el 17 de noviembre de 2023, un film de drama, acción, aventuras y ciencia ficción basado en la historia de Los juegos del hambre, años antes del universo que ya conocemos de las anteriores películas de la saga. La misma también fue dirigida por Francis Lawrence, un cineasta bastante conocido y que sin lugar a dudas haría un gran trabajo al frente de la película.


Trama


La duración de la película es de dos horas y 37 minutos, un largometraje como estamos acostumbrados de esta franquicia de Los juegos del hambre. En este tiempo nos cuenta la historia de Coriolanus Snow, quien era el temible presidente de Panem y quien causó el terror en todos los distritos del universo de Los juegos del hambre. Nos encontramos a un Snow bastante joven, de 18 años de edad, y quien tenía una actitud bastante distinta a que la vimos en las anteriores películas, así que me sorprendió gratamente, ya que nunca me leí los libros, no sabía por donde iría la historia, aunque Coriolanus fue cambiando poco a poco, a medida que iba avanzando la película, por lo cual nos podemos dar cuenta de la persona que se volvió y el porqué de muchas de sus terribles acciones, aunque al final nada justicia los medios.


Obviamente, la historia se centra en los juegos del hambre, los tributos y los mentores que en ese momento, para el décimo juego, eran usados los jóvenes de Panem del Capitolio y no los ganadores como vimos en la historia que nos contaron luego de estos eventos de Balada de pájaros cantores y serpientes. Uno de esos mentores era Snow, un joven de una familia reconocida del Capitolio, pero quienes no estaban pasando por los mejores momentos económicos, así que Coriolanus trataría de sacar a su familia adelante, volverla a colocar en una buena posición. Bueno sí visto Los juegos del Hambre, sabrás si lo logró o no y más viendo en la persona tan despreciable que se convirtió. Realmente estos juegos transforma a las personas y queda demostrado en cada una de las producciones.

The plot tells us how Snow becomes the mentor of Lucy Gray Baird, the female tribute of district 12 and how not to make mention of this district if that is where our Katniss Everdeen is, who was played in the first films and saga by Jennifer Lawrence, who undoubtedly is missed a lot in this film, but so much so that many references are made to her character, even her name is mentioned and one of the songs she sang in the original films of The Hunger Games franchise. Lucy is a girl with similar things to Katniss, although the girl on fire is my favorite character and can never be matched with others, it's already a personal opinion.

Romance in movies can never be missing, and in Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes we see the attraction between Snow and Lucy, although this movie shows us that sometimes it's all about self-interest. The story is very good, in my opinion, it is a success and I am sure that fans of The Hunger Games saga will like it, since from what I have read, this new and last movie of the franchise is well adapted and faithful to the books. Is the story perfect? No, there are moments that are a little tedious, it lost interest, but overall I liked the movie, not at the level of the original films, but this prequel was a success to learn more about this universe created by Suzanne Collins and adapted to the big screen.

The cast of this installment seemed pretty good to me, where I must highlight Peter Dinklage, who was one of the creators of the hunger games, as well as dean of the Panem academy where the young promises studied. Peter's performance was good, although I would have liked much more participation of his character. Viola Davis gave life to Dr. Volumnia Gaul who was the vigilante of the games, a pretty evil character and the truth is that the actress did well, as that was the feeling that I got, to be a really bad character in terms of personality, not interpretation, trying to achieve their goals, no matter who affects their decisions. Tom Blyth was the one who played Coriolanus, the protagonist of our story. Yes he did well, but I liked the previous characters a little better. Rachel Zegler is Lucy Gray Baird, one of the main characters in this story, along with Snow.

La trama nos cuenta como Snow se convierte en el mentor de Lucy Gray Baird, el tributo femenino del distrito 12 y como no hacer mención a este distrito si allí es donde es nuestra Katniss Everdeen, quien fue interpretada en las primeras películas y saga por Jennifer Lawrence, quien sin lugar a dudas se le echa mucho de menos en este filme, pero tanto es así que se hacen muchas referencias a su personaje, incluso se menciona su nombre y una de las canciones que cantó en las películas originales de la franquicia de Los juegos del hambre. Lucy es una chica con cosas similares a Katniss, aunque la chica en llamas es mi personaje favorito y nunca puede ser igualado con otros, ya es una opinión personal.


El romance en las películas nunca puede faltar, y en Balada de pájaros cantores y serpientes vemos la atracción entre Snow y Lucy, aunque esta película nos muestra que a veces todo se trata simplemente por el interés personal. La historia está muy bien, llevaba desde mi opinión, es un acierto y estoy seguro a que a los fanáticos de la saga de Los juegos del hambre les gustará, ya que por lo leído, esta nueva y última película de la franquicia está bien adaptada y fielmente a los libros. ¿La historia es perfecta? No, hay momentos que son un poco tediosos, perdía interés, pero en general la película me gustó, no al nivel de las películas originales, pero esta precuela fue un acierto para conocer más de este universo creado por Suzanne Collins y adaptada a la pantalla grande.


El reparto de esta entrega me pareció bastante bueno, donde debo destacar a Peter Dinklage, quien fue uno de los creadores de los juegos del hambre, además de decano de la academia de Panem donde estudiaban las jóvenes promesas. La actuación de Peter fue bueno, aunque me fuese gustado mucha más participación de su personaje. Viola Davis le dio vida a Dra. Volumnia Gaul quien era la vigilante de los juegos, un personaje bastante malvado y la verdad es que la actriz lo hice bien, ya que esa fue la sensación que me transmitió, de ser un personaje realmente malo en cuanto a personalidad, no a interpretación, que trata de lograr sus objetivos, sin importar a quien le afecte sus decisiones. Tom Blyth fue quien interpretó a Coriolanus, el prota de nuestra historia. Si lo hizo bien, pero los anteriores personajes me gustaron un poco más. Rachel Zegler es Lucy Gray Baird, uno de los personajes principales de esta historia, junto a Snow.

Jo Willems really did an excellent job with the photography of the film, the truth is that the scenery and the setting of the film is beautiful, very nice places and faithfully represent the saga of The Hunger Games. I can even say that despite the budget being lower in this latest installment, this section was very prominent, as well as the costumes, very consistent with the characters and the universe that we knew several years ago. Another section that we cannot leave aside is the soundtrack, where nostalgia plays an important role and many of the musical themes remind us of the franchise. The movie Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, prequel to The Hunger Games, has a touch of musical, something that was not seen in the original films, beyond some song sung by Katniss, but not as pronounced as we see in this installment. I must say that musicals are not to my liking, but even so the songs were very nice and emotional, so in this aspect I consider it positive.

Final opinion

The Hunger Games: A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is a good movie, a gem for those who love this universe, it is not perfect, the plot tends to be a little tedious at times, but the main story and learn more about Snow, is interesting, in addition to the other characters. The script of the movie is pretty good, and how not, if it involved the creator of the books herself Suzanne Collins, along with Michael Arndt and Michael Lesslie. The photography and music is to be enjoyed. It does not consider this installment to be better than its predecessors, but it more than delivers by letting us know more of this universe of The Hunger Games and reminding us of the good things from the movies, as it takes the good things from the original films. I think the ending was open, it gives to continue the story, but for the moment I recommend this movie, I'm sure you will have a good time, especially if you like the genre.

Jo Willems realmente hizo un excelente trabajo con la fotografía de la película, la verdad es que los escenarios y la ambientación de la película es hermosa, unos lugares muy bonitos y que representan fielmente a la saga de Los juegos del hambre. Incluso puedo decir que a pesar del presupuesto ser menor en esta última entrega, este apartado fue muy destacado, al igual que el vestuario, muy acorde a los personajes y al universo que conocimos hace varios años. Otro apartado que no podemos dejar a un lado es la banda sonora, donde la nostalgia juego un papel importante y mucho de los temas musicales nos hacen recordar la franquicia. La película Balada de pájaros cantores y serpientes, precuela de Los juegos del hambre, tiene un toque de musical, algo que no se veía en las películas originales, más allá de alguna canción que haya cantado Katniss, pero no tan pronuncionado como lo vemos en esta entrega. Debo decir que los musicales no son de mi agrado, pero aun así las canciones fueron muy bonitas y emotivas, así que en este aspecto lo considero positivo.


Opinión Final


Los juegos del hambre: Balada de pájaros cantores y serpientes es una buena película, una joya para aquellos que amamos este universo, no es perfecto, la trama suele ser un poco tediosa por momentos, pero la historia principal y conocer más de Snow, es interesante, además de los otros personajes. El guion de la película está bastante bien, y como no, si en él participó la propia creadora de los libros Suzanne Collins, junto a Michael Arndt y Michael Lesslie. La fotografía y la música es para disfrutar. No considera que esta entrega sea mejor que sus predecesoras, pero sí cumple con creces al darnos a conocer más de este universo de Los juegos del hambre y que nos hace recordar lo bueno de las películas, ya que toma las cosas buenas de los filmes originales. El final considero que fue abierto, da para continuar la historia, pero por el momento les recomiendo esta película, estoy seguro de que la pasaran bien, más si les gusta el género.
