Devotion. A story of heroes (2022) [ENG-ESP]

Friends of the community, I hope you are well, it is a pleasure to be here again. This time I bring you again a movie Devotion, which in Spanish is known as Historia de Honor. This production is from the year 2022, of the war genre, drama and biopic, as it is based on real people, a true story. It was directed by J. D. Dillard, while the script was written by Jake Crane and Jonathan Stewart.

Amigos de la comunidad, espero que se encuentren bien, es un placer estar por acá nuevamente. En esta oportunidad les traigo nuevamente una película Devotion, que en español se conoce como Historia de Honor. Esta producción es del año 2022, del género bélico, drama y biopic, ya que está basada en personas reales, una historia verídica. La misma fue dirigida por J. D. Dillard, mientras que el guion estuvo a cargo de Jake Crane y Jonathan Stewart.

History of Honor, a film that tells us about a group of American pilots preparing to enforce what they have always worked for, which is to fight for their country, regardless of the consequences, as the film's motto says, “Surrender is not an option”. In the context of the Cold War of the 1950s, after World War II, we have two pilots of the U.S. Navy aviation, one is Tom Hudner, a lieutenant who has had an impeccable career, a pilot who is very outstanding. On the other hand, we have Jesse Brown, an African-American pilot, who is very talented, he's feisty, he tends to do things that others don't, he even reminds me of Maverick from Top Gun. But the reality is that the story of these two characters are different, since Brown was the only pilot of color to be in the elite of naval pilots, so he had many complications in his career due to racism, a struggle that still continues in our times, although to a lesser extent than in those years.

Historia de Honor, una película que nos habla sobre un grupo de pilotos estadounidense se preparan para hacer cumplir por lo que siempre han trabajado, que es el poder luchar por su país, sin importante las consecuencias, tal como dice el lema del filme, “Rendirse no es una opción”. En el marco de la Guerra Fría de los años 1950, luego de la segunda mundial, tenemos a dos pilotos de la aviación de la marina de EE. UU., uno es Tom Hudner, un teniente que ha tenido una carrera impecable, un piloto que es muy destacado. Por otro lado, tenemos a Jesse Brown, un piloto afroamericano, que es muy talentoso, es aguerrido, suele hacer cosas que los demás no, incluso me hace recordar a Maverick de Top Gun. Pero la realidad es que la historia de estos dos personajes son distintas, ya que Brown era el único piloto de color en estar en la élite de los pilotos navales, por lo cual tuvo muchas complicaciones en su carrera debido al racismo, una lucha que aún sigue en nuestros tiempos, aunque en menos medida que en aquellos años.

Jesse was very distrustful, but Lieutenant Tom Hudner earns his trust by becoming his only friend, someone he can trust. Although of course it was not easy, and that Ensign Jesse Browns has gone through many racist comments from his neighbors, which is why he is often self-motivated by remembering the things they did to him. A story that can be a little repetitive, that can seem like the typical Hollywood movies, but in the end it has its details that make it different. A story of self-improvement that is worthwhile, it also touches on racist issues and the brotherhood between people who do the same work, but risking their lives in each of the missions they perform.

Jesse era alguien muy desconfiado, pero el teniente Tom Hudner se gana su confianza convirtiéndose en su único amigo, en alguien que puede confiar. Aunque claro que no fue fácil, y que el alférez Jesse Browns ha pasado por muchos comentarios racistas de sus vecinos, razón por la cual se suele automotivar recordando las cosas que le hacían. Una historia que puede ser un poco repetitiva, que puede parecer las típicas películas de Hollywood, pero al final tiene sus detalles que la hacen distinta. Una historia de superación personal que vale la pena, además que toca temas racista y la hermandad entre personas que realizan la misma labor, pero arriesgando su vida en cada una de las misiones que realizan.

The cast of the film is very good. Ensign Jesse Brown is played by American actor Jonathan Majors, while Lieutenant Tom Hudner is played by Glen Powell. These the ones who have the leading roles in the film, doing a magnificent job each, I can even say that this is the first time I have two favorite roles. Both tell the story very well, I believed what I was seeing and I think that was one of the reasons why I liked the film, even though many find the story empty, personally I don't have this opinion. Devotion has had mixed reviews, some with positive notes, others not so much.

El reparto de la película está muy bien. El alférez Jesse Brown es interpretado por el actor estadounidense Jonathan Majors, mientras que el teniente Tom Hudner por Glen Powell. Estos los que tienen los papeles principales de la película, haciendo una magnífica trabajo cada uno, incluso puedo decir que es la primera vez que tengo dos papeles favoritos. Ambos cuentan muy bien la historia, me creí lo que estaba viendo y eso creo que fue algo por la cual el filme me agradó, más allá de que muchos encuentran la historia vacía, en lo personal no tengo esta opinión. Historia de Honor (Devotion) ha tenido opiniones encontradas, algunos con notas positivas, otras no tanto.

The photography of the film is really fascinating, it is one of the things I liked the most, the different scenarios such as the naval school where they trained, the aircraft carrier where they went to perform the missions, but what left me totally astonished were the combat aircraft, such as the mythical Corsairs. I also liked the special effects very much, another plus point of this movie. Erik Messerschmidt did an excellent job. The director J. D. Dillard did a great job, several shots of the film were impressive, he immersed us inside the film and makes us enjoy much more of what we are seeing.

La fotografía de la película es realmente fascinante, es una de las cosas que más me gusto, los diferentes escenarios como la escuela de la naval donde se entrenaban, el portaaviones donde se fueron a realizar las misiones, pero lo que me dejo totalmente atónito fueron las aeronaves de combate, como es los míticos Corsarios. Los efectos especiales también me gustó mucho, otro punto a favor de esta película. Erik Messerschmidt hizo un excelente trabajo. El director J. D. Dillard realizó un trabajo estupendo, varias tomas de la película fueron impresionante, nos sumergía dentro del filme y nos hace disfrutar mucho más de lo que estamos viendo.

The music was in charge of Chanda Dancy, with music that gives a great immersion in the story we are watching. In short, Devotion or History of Honor is a good movie that we can enjoy. One thing I can criticize it is a little repetitive of the story, where we see the typical American pilots who excel, but we know that the purpose is to try to exalt these characters who have excelled in serving their country. Personally I liked the movie a lot, but I understand that it is because the war genre and based on real events is one of my favorites, where it tells a story that really happened. The cinematography and the soundtrack is outstanding, so it is a movie that I recommend, even for those who are not lovers of this type of productions.

La música estuvo a cargo de Chanda Dancy, con músicas que da una gran inmersión en la historia que estamos viendo. En fin, Devotion o Historia de Honor es una buena película que podemos disfrutar. Algo que le puedo criticar es un poco lo repetitiva de la historia, donde vemos a los típicos pilotos estadounidenses que sobresalen, pero sabemos que la finalidad es tratar de enaltecer a estos personajes que han sobresalido al servir a su país. En lo personal la película me gustó mucho, pero entiendo que es porque el género bélico y basados en hechos reales es de mis favoritos, donde cuenta una historia que realmente pasó. La fotografía y la banda sonora es de lo más sobresaliente, así que es una película que les recomiendo, incluso para aquellos que no son amantes de este tipo de producciones.
