[ESP - ENG] El Rey León: Original vs Live Action / The Lion King: Original vs Live Action

En los últimos años, Disney ha buscado llevar varias de sus películas clásicas a un formato live action, y sinceramente, no ha sido la mejor decisión, ya que la gran mayoría han sido un fracaso, tanto en critica como en taquilla, dañando en parte el legado de las mismas. Por eso hoy he querido comparar un clásico de la animación como lo es el Rey León, comparándola con su remake, para ver si este último argumento se puede aplicar a esta película.

In recent years, Disney has sought to bring several of its classic films to a live action format, and honestly, it has not been the best decision, since the vast majority have been a failure, both critically and at the box office, partly damaging their legacy. That's why today I wanted to compare an animation classic like The Lion King, comparing it with its remake, to see if this last argument can be applied to this film.

Iniciando por lo más básico, la historia de ambas películas es la misma, pues vemos a Simba, un cachorro de león destinado a ser el rey de la sabana, así como la de su padre, Mufasa, quien es asesinado por Scar, su hermano menor, por sus ambiciones al trono, por lo que el joven príncipe debe huir para mantenerse con vida, para luego reclamar su puesto como el legítimo rey.

Starting with the most basic, the story of both films is the same, as we see Simba, a lion cub destined to be the king of the savanna, as well as that of his father, Mufasa, who is killed by Scar, his brother. minor, for his ambitions for the throne, so the young prince must flee to stay alive, and then claim his position as the rightful king.

Hasta aquí, todo es muy similar entre ambas cintas, aunque tengo que resaltar que la original tiene mejores escenas musicales, con una animación más colorida y llamativa, mientras que la live action es como más madura, pues indaga más en la historia del villano, pues vemos que previo a lo que ya conocíamos, Scar y Mufasa ya se habían enfrentado por el trono, con el segundo saliendo como el ganador. Así mismo, en la escena donde vemos que la sabana ha perdido su vitalidad y está siendo destruida, vemos que la razón es porque el nuevo Rey no tiene limitaciones a la caza, acabando con la sostenibilidad y el equilibrio de la naturaleza.

Up to this point, everything is very similar between both films, although I have to highlight that the original has better musical scenes, with more colorful and striking animation, while the live action is more mature, as it delves more into the villain's history, Well, we see that prior to what we already knew, Scar and Mufasa had already faced each other for the throne, with the second emerging as the winner. Likewise, in the scene where we see that the savanna has lost its vitality and is being destroyed, we see that the reason is because the new King has no limitations on hunting, ending the sustainability and balance of nature.

Repasando el diseño de los personajes, me parece que la original lo hizo mejor, pues pese a que mantienen características de los animales que representan, son más antropomorficos, lo que les permite gestualizar muy bien emociones, haciendo que conectemos mas fácilmente con los personajes. En la remake, se les dió un aspecto totalmente realista, perdiendo esa capacidad de gestualizar, haciendo que en muchas escenas luzcan raros los personajes, o de lleno, totalmente inexpresivos, perdiendo esa conexión con los mismos.

Reviewing the design of the characters, it seems to me that the original did it better, because although they maintain characteristics of the animals they represent, they are more anthropomorphic, which allows them to gesture emotions very well, making us connect more easily with the characters. In the remake, they were given a totally realistic appearance, losing that ability to gesture, making the characters look strange in many scenes, or completely, totally inexpressive, losing that connection with them.

También hay que hablar del peor diseño de los personajes, el de Pumba, pues al hacerlo realista, perdió todo su carisma y ternura, pues los jabalíes en la vida real dan incluso miedo, jajaja. Otros personajes también sufrieron de esto, como el mismo Timón o Rafiki, pero no hay comparación a lo que se perdió con el diseño de Pumba, personalmente, realmente lo odie.

We also have to talk about the worst character design, that of Pumbaa, because by making it realistic, he lost all his charisma and tenderness, because wild boars in real life are even scary, hahaha. Other characters also suffered from this, like Timon himself or Rafiki, but there is no comparison to what was lost with Pumbaa's design, personally, I really hate it.

Este mismo tipo de animación realista lo que si nos da es un villano más épico e intimidador, pues Scar se ve realmente bien, y aunque se pierden muchos efectos sombríos de la animación, lo que también le juegan a su favor en la original, su diseño es más terrorífico en la remake. Las hienas tambien lucen espeluznantes, algo normal de su propio ciclo de vida, por lo que en este apartado, pienso que la nueva versión hizo las cosas un poco mejor.

What this same type of realistic animation does give us is a more epic and intimidating villain, because Scar looks really good, and although many dark effects of the animation are lost, which also works in his favor in the original, his design is more terrifying in the remake. The hyenas also look creepy, which is a normal part of their own life cycle, so in this department, I think the new version did things a little better.

Hablando ahora de las escenas que más peso tienen en la película, la persecución de las hienas a Simba en el cementerio de elefantes fue muy bien lograda en ambas películas, aunque en la remake se siente aún más el peligro, mientras que la escena de la estampida y la muerte de Mufasa me parece que se ve mejor en la animación, rompiéndome el corazón siempre que veo al pequeño león acurrucado al lado del cuerpo de su padre.

Speaking now of the scenes that have the most weight in the film, the hyenas' chase of Simba in the elephant cemetery was very well achieved in both films, although in the remake the danger is felt even more, while the scene of the stampede and the death of Mufasa seems to me to be seen better in animation, breaking my heart every time I see the little lion curled up next to his father's body.

Me quedo también con la batalla final de la versión animada, pues aunque la remake hizo literalmente un calco de las escenas, ver a Rafiki luchando con su bastón o a Timón y Pumba atacando a las hienas, no es lo mismo en live action.

I also prefer the final battle of the animated version, because although the remake literally copied the scenes, seeing Rafiki fighting with his staff or Timon and Pumbaa attacking the hyenas is not the same in live action.

Haciendo un análisis general del aspecto visual de los escenarios, la primera versión cuenta con una animación impecable, excelente para su época y que con el pasar de los años ha envejecido muy bien, pero la remake logra un realismo increíble, inspirándose de lugares reales en Kenia como Chyulu Hills o el Parque Nacional Serengueti, localizado en Tanzania.

Making a general analysis of the visual aspect of the settings, the first version has impeccable animation, excellent for its time and which over the years has aged very well, but the remake achieves incredible realism, drawing inspiration from real places in Kenya such as Chyulu Hills or the Serengeti National Park, located in Tanzania.

La voces de los personajes también fue una decisión acertada por parte de ambas películas, viendo inclusive nombres un poco más ilustre en la remake, como Beyoncé haciendo de Nala, pero la mejor decisión fue la de mantener al mismísimo James Earl Jones como la voz de Mufasa, manteniendo ese grado de epicidad. Pese al talento de los escogidos, la original tiene más canciones, algunas muy buenas como la de Scar que contaba con planos increíbles y una temática como nazi, aunque la remake tiene también lo suyo, con una canción original de Beyoncé.

The voices of the characters were also a wise decision on the part of both films, even seeing slightly more illustrious names in the remake, such as Beyoncé playing Nala, but the best decision was to keep James Earl Jones himself as the voice of Mufasa, maintaining that degree of epicness. Despite the talent of those chosen, the original has more songs, some very good like the one by Scar that had incredible shots and a Nazi theme, although the remake also has its own thing, with an original song by Beyoncé.

Luego de todos estos argumentos, y aunque la versión live action tiene sus cosas positivas, la versión animada de 1994 es muy superior, pues más allá del factor nostalgia, la animación, los planos, los colores y la forma en que nos podemos conectar con los personajes por sus rasgos más antropomorficos, son cosas únicas y la volvieron un clásico de de Disney y de la animación tradicional o 2D.

After all these arguments, and although the live action version has its positive things, the 1994 animated version is far superior, because beyond the nostalgia factor, the animation, the shots, the colors and the way in which we can connect with The characters, due to their more anthropomorphic features, are unique things and made it a classic of Disney and traditional or 2D animation.
