The Last Voyage of the Demeter - Dracula Mar de Sangre - Review
Hello my Hivers lovers of good Movies and TV! I hope you are having a great weekend, at home we are a little sick, so we have dedicated ourselves to watch some movies to pass the time, and as I told you in my last review, I was waiting to see this latest version of Dracula, The Last Voyage of Demeter or Dracula Sea of Blood as it is known in Spanish America, is based on Bram Stoker's 1897 novel, and this new version made in cooperation of Universal Pictures and DreamWorks, is based on the seventh chapter of the same, which talks about the voyage of a schooner that departs from Varna - Bulgaria, to England. A few weeks ago I came across the advertising of this film in some social networks, because to be honest I did not know of its existence, and the truth is that the publicity aroused my curiosity, and as I love movies based on Dracula, I definitely had to see it. I stayed away from the reviews to not be predisposed at the time of watching it, and the truth is that if I had read the reviews, I don't think I would have seen it, as they are quite disappointing.
Now, I will tell you my opinion, trying not to get carried away by the reviews I have read, because I agree with some and not so much with others. With a fairly diverse cast of actors, they did a good job within the plot proposed by the script. We have the great Liam Cunningham, who we had already seen in Game of Thrones, as Captain Elliot, an old captain who esteems that this trip, where he is carrying a mysterious cargo for which he will be paid very well if he arrives in London on the estimated date, will be his last and thus he will retire to live in the countryside with his daughter and grandson Toby (Woody Norman), who is also his assistant aboard the Demeter. They meet Clemens (Corey Hawkins), a doctor who graduated from Cambridge, who has had no luck practicing his profession because he is black, and who is the one who finds Anna (Aisling Franciosi) a stowaway who ends up being one of the women who feed Dracula and for whom Clemens ends up making enemies with the rest of the crew.
This story begins in the port of Varna where a group of elderly people deliver some “mysterious” boxes with the logo of a dragon, emblematic of Dracula, to the crew of the Demeter, to be delivered to England, here Clemens saves the life of Toby, thus earning the opportunity to join the crew, since before that, he had been denied it. Once on the ship, Toby introduces him to the rest of the crew, already at sea strange things begin to be felt on the ship, and in a first storm, a first drawer of the mysterious cargo opens, and Clemens finds the body. Anna, who is treated as a stowaway and whom the rest of the crew insists on throwing overboard, because a woman on the ship is a bad omen for them, and they couldn't be more right.
The staging of the monster called Dracula, and in this film, we never get to see the human form of Dracula, and to be honest, little is seen, since his appearances in scenes are more like flashes of it, They are really short appearances, and although you can see how aggressive Dracula can be, and here the blood does look very real. Really bloody scenes, animals and dead people, but more than terror, I must say that it is a suspense film, because the terror that the film was supposed to provide is not what I expected, and here I must say that I am left with the version of Dracula that we saw in Dracula: The Untold Story; The acting, or maybe I should say the script, is quite weak in my opinion, the plot lacks a bit of emotion. Many say that they went very quickly to the murders, I think the opposite, because if it weren't for them, I don't think I would have finished watching it.
Filmed between Berlin and Malta, there are not many that we can enjoy in the film, since it is based on the voyage of the Demeter, which takes place at sea, so basically we can criticize the special effects, which do not go beyond the rain, the stormy sea and men set on fire, which to tell the truth are quite real, so, yes, I thought they were very good and according to the plot.
As for performances, I must say that Captain Elliot and crewman Clemens, were the best of the cast, being Captain Elliot who, for me, added that emotional charge to which the actor has accustomed us and he did it very well. Now, this movie is stipulated to be the opening of a new dark universe based on Dracula, and that was very clear to me at the end of it, because it leaves us the unknown of what happens after the Demeter touches land, however, and since, as I mentioned before, they did not give us the terrifying plot they promised, it remains to be seen if we will have that sequel that many of us want to see, because personally, I think this movie, although it did not fulfill what was promised, it can still be saved.
We have a film with suspenseful, sad, emotional scenes, some that make us think how unfair life is, much less blood than I expected to see, although we must also take into account that the crew of the Demeter was not very numerous to say; it is a film that perhaps they could have taken more out of it, however, I left that feeling of wanting to see more, which makes me think that it is not as bad as it is painted out there, for this new version of Dracula, I think it is appropriate to give it a 6/10.

¡Hola mis Hivers amantes del buen Cine y la Televisión! Espero estén teniendo un gran fin de semana, en casa estamos un poco enfermos, por lo que nos hemos dedicado a ver algunas películas para pasar el rato, y como les comente en mi última review, estaba esperando para ver esta última versión de Drácula, El último viaje del Deméter o Drácula Mar de Sangre como es conocida en Hispanoamérica, está basada en la novela de Bram Stoker de 1897, y esta nueva versión hecha en cooperación de Universal Pictures y DreamWorks, se basa en el séptimo capítulo de la misma, que habla de la travesía de una goleta que parte desde Varna - Bulgaria, hasta Inglaterra. Hace unas semanas que venía encontrándome con la publicidad de esta película en algunas redes sociales, pues para ser sincera no sabía de su existencia, y la verdad es que la publicidad me despertó la curiosidad, y como me encantan las películas basadas en Drácula, definitivamente tenía que verla. Me alejé de las críticas para no estar predispuesta al momento de verla, y la verdad de haber leído las críticas, creo que no la habría visto, pues son bastante decepcionantes.
Ahora bien, les diré mi opinión, tratando de no dejarme llevar de las críticas que he leído, pues con algunas estoy de acuerdo y con otras no tanto. Con un reparto bastante diverso de actores que la verdad, hicieron un buen trabajo dentro de la trama propuesta por el libreto. Tenemos al gran Liam Cunningham, que ya lo habíamos visto en Juego de Tronos, como el capitán Elliot, un viejo capitán que estima que este viaje en donde lleva un cargamento misterioso por el que le van a pagar muy bien si llega en la fecha estimada a Londres, será el último y así retirarse a vivir en el campo con su hija y nieto Toby (Woody Norman), quien además es su ayudante a bordo del Demeter. Conocen a Clemens (Corey Hawkins), un médico graduado de Cambridge, que no ha tenido suerte para ejercer su profesión por ser de color, y que es quien encuentra a Anna (Aisling Franciosi) un polizón que termina siendo una de las mujeres que alimentan a Drácula y por quien Clemens, termina enemistándose con el resto de la tripulación.
Esta historia comienza en el puerto de Varna en donde un grupo de ancianos entregan unas cajas “misteriosas” con el logo de un dragón, emblemático de Drácula, a los tripulantes del Demeter, para ser entregadas en Inglaterra, aquí Clemens le salva la vida a Toby, ganándose así la oportunidad de unirse a la tripulación, ya que antes de eso, se la habían negado. Una vez en el barco, Toby le presenta al resto de la tripulación, ya en alta mar se comienzan a sentir cosas extrañas en el barco, y en una primera tormenta, se abre un primer cajón de la carga misteriosa, y Clemens encuentra el cuerpo de Anna, quien es tratada como polizón y a la que el resto de la tripulación insiste en arrojar por la borda, pues una mujer en el barco es de mal augurio para ellos, y no podían esta más en lo cierto.
La puesta en escena del monstruo llamado Drácula, y es que, en esta película, nunca logramos ver la forma humana de Drácula, y para ser sinceros es poco lo que se ve, pues sus apariciones en escenas son más, como flashes del mismo, son apariciones realmente cortas, y aunque se ve lo agresivo que puede llegar a ser Drácula, y aquí la sangre sí que se ve muy real. Escenas realmente sangrientas, animales y personas muertas, pero más que terror, debo decir que es una película de suspenso, pues el terror que se supone que brindaría la película, no es el que yo me esperaba, y aquí debo decir que me quedo con la versión de Drácula que vimos en Drácula: La historia jamás contada; las actuaciones, o tal vez debería decir el libreto, están bastante flojas a mi manera de ver, le falto un poco de emoción a la trama. Muchos dicen que se fueron muy rápido a los asesinatos, yo pienso lo contrario, pues de no ser por ellos, no creo haber terminado de verla.
Grabada entre Berlín y Malta, no son muchos de los que podemos disfrutar en la película, pues la misma se basa en la travesía del Demeter, misma que se desarrolla en alta mar, por lo que básicamente podremos criticar los efectos especiales, que no van más allá de la lluvia, el mar tormentoso y hombres prendidos en fuego, que a decir verdad son bastante reales, por lo que, si, me parecieron muy buenos y acorde a la trama.
En cuanto a actuaciones, debo decir que el capitán Elliot y el tripulante Clemens, fueron las mejores del reparto, siendo el capitán Elliot quien, para mí, le agrego esa carga emocional a las que el actor nos tiene acostumbrados y lo hizo muy bien. Ahora bien, esta película está estipulada para ser el abreboca de un nuevo universo oscuro basado en Drácula, y eso me quedo muy claro al final de la misma, pues nos deja esa incógnita de saber qué sucede después de que el Demeter toca tierra firme, sin embargo, y en vista de que, como lo mencione antes, no nos brindaron esa trama terrorífica que prometían, está por verse si vamos a tener esa secuela que tal vez muchos queremos ver, pues en lo personal, creo que esta película si bien no cumplió lo prometido, puede salvarse aún.
Tenemos una película con, escenas de suspenso, tristes, emotivas, algunas que nos hacen pensar lo injusta de la vida, mucha menos sangre de la que espere ver, aunque también hay que tener en cuenta que la tripulación del Demeter no era muy numerosa que digamos; es una película a la que tal vez podrían haberle sacado más provecho, sin embargo, me dejo esa sensación de querer ver más, lo que me hace pensar que tampoco es tan mala como la pintan por ahí, para esta nueva versión de Drácula, creo que lo propio es darle un 6/10.

Creo que tu opinión sobre "The Last Voyage of Demeter" está genial. Me encanta cómo desglosaste todo, desde la trama hasta los efectos especiales. Y sí, estoy contigo en que el film podría haber dado más de sí. Me hizo gracia cómo mencionaste tu anticipación por verla y cómo la comparaste con otras versiones de Drácula. La verdad la esperaba con ansias, no fue tan genial como esperaba, pero tampoco puedo decir que perdí el tiempo, después de todo, no es la primera película que no cubre las expectativas de todos.
El cine es así de controversial, a veces, por las mismas promociones, trailer y críticas, esperamos más de lo q es, pero bueno, siempre vale la pena.

No soy mucho de Drácula, pero honestamente me parece que a simple vista se ve genial y me llama la atención la ambientación porque no he visto algo así en estas tramas argumentativas, lo digo por los barcos y la navegación en general.

No es igual a otra película de Dracula, eso si puedo decirte, nada parecido a otras, muchos la comparan con Alien sobre un barco jajaja. Pero no esta tan mala como la pintan.
Estoy loca por ver esta película desde que vi el trailer me quedé con la curiosidad de ver esta versión , ya que disfruto mucho las películas de Drácula, y ahora por tu apreciación nos comentas que es entretenida y que al verla quedamos ansiosos de saber que sucede al final, por lo que buscare tiempo para verla, saludos

Estoy de acuerdo contigo, no es una película extraordinaria en el ámbito del terror, pero al menos cumple el objetivo de entretener. También la sentí floja en muchos aspectos, con una línea temporal que parecía muy estricta, y con giros que no eran impresionantes, sin embargo el vestuario y los escenarios estuvieron muy bien hechos, y la actuación de Cunninghan me cautivó.
Me gustó leer tu perspectiva sobre esta película de manera más amplia; parece que opinamos similar. Excelente reseña.
Es así, tuvo sus fallos, no podemos negarlos, y por momentos daba un poco de pereza, pero te mantiene entretenido el hecho de ver la cara de Dracula y saber en que se convierte, y definitivamente la actuación de Cunningham fue genial, supo transmitir los sentimientos de su papel a la perfección.
