Rain, Snow, Rain, 1980s MOVIE DAY, Fire, Grilling - Saturday

Yesterday turned out to be one of the rare days of doing nothing but watching movies all day. The dawn light showed the rain falling which really tried to turn to snow once the sun had risen. It's a bit weird to be having rain the first week of January but that is just how warm this winter is.

At first light it was still rain.

Within about 20 minutes it turned to snow but the ground was still warm enough most places that it never really stuck. The wet and warm snow fell off and on for much of the morning, mixing with rain a lot of the time.

I got my posts written and then watched the recent episode of Gold Rush while @stryeyz and the boys soaked in the hot tub.

Once they were out the rain and snow kept falling and @stryeyz had to work much of the day. It works out well that she can be in the house with us and we have been watching a slew of old 1980s movies over the past weeks. While they soaked I went and found a good list of 80s movies, wrote down the ones I wanted, then found the torrents. I got a dozen movies that I remember well from childhood and the first for the day was Back To The Future.

I have to say the movie still holds up well and there is not that much in it super hokey.

Next I put on the recent episode of The Unbelievable with Dan Aykroyd which is a new show on the History channel. It's actually rather funny that the show is out now as we recently showed the boys Ghostbusters for the first time, which Dan wrote. This episode was about super humans which was a bit embellished for sure. The people they talked about who did "super human strength" feats were lifting NO WHERE NEAR the amount claimed. A woman lifted the rear corner of a car off her son and they claimed she lifted 3000+ pounds, but that is a lie. She was lifting the corner of the car which has the bulk of its weight on the other 3 wheels. The woman lifted maybe a few hundred pounds due to the cantilever action and weight distribution. It was still a feat, but not nearly what was claimed.

So after the episode @stryeyz asked for Back to the future 2 which is not exactly as good as the first. I remember when the movie came out, I was 11, and it was one of the first movies I remember that filmed the 2 sequels together. This came out in 1989 and the 3rd movie came out in 1990. The end of the second has a ton of "post" scenes from the 3rd at the end. I will say the 3rd movie jumps the shark in a big way.

Next on the docket was Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. This is one of my stronger movie memories from a kid, the melting faces. That image stuck in my head for years, never really scary but more so one of those gruesome memories that became funny as time went on. It was great as the movie played, the boys got to see a bunch of stuff that the Mythbusters had tested in a couple of their shows, of which the boys adore.

There's a song from 1200 Micrograms that has a line I love that is directly referencing this movie...
"Now let's go out there and melt some faces!!!!!!"

The last movie for the day was Wargames. I grew up on this and have always loved the high tech bent. Between this, Real Genius, and many other movies from the same era I was exposed to the possibility of "young genius". Have you noticed that the movies now never show the same sort of "genius" that was written into scripts then? We were shown that genius was a good thing and I know for a fact that most tech right now was created by people who grew up watching these movies.

So much of the 1980s was absolute garbage, but we got so many amazing movies that stand the test of time and still provide entertainment to this day.

We got a stoppage in the rain in the late afternoon where I was able to get the fire going in the pit for the evening. I barely made it in time as the next round of rain came in but the pitch on the wood kept the flames going well enough.

I grilled our burgers for dinner and we finished watching Wargames. It was about normal time when we got out to soak.

Winter is trying to show up. Tomorrow into Tuesday is calling for up to 6-8 inches of snow yet it will be 40F Tuesday. Then Friday night is calling for -1F low. What a whipsaw year of weather. Today is going to be mellow so that means I HAVE to get anything done outside the prepare for this inbound mess. I'll prep the snowblower and have it stationed for easy startup, work in the greenhouse and get the oil heater in and on with maybe a red heat lamp, make sure birds and animals are set for the mess, Hawks play this afternoon, and I'll likely grill again for dinner tonight.

It seem you enjoyed watching movie all day
It is really nice but it is sad that you can’t always do that

I rarely do because I have a deep need to be doing and sitting watching too long makes me feel like a lazy and unproductive person.

Raiders still holds up as a well-crafted, enjoyable action movie all these decades later. I haven't seem WarGames, or a lot of the other movies I "should" have seen as a child of the 80s and especially the 90s in spite of access to a VCR. Mostly, I remember my sisters watching Disney films like Aladdin over and over. We didn't go to the theater often, and had few rentals other than what we borrowed from the library. Which reminds me, the sisters also watched the Mary-Kate and Ashley Olson movies over and over and over again, too, whenever they could borrow the library tapes.

Ooopfh! That hurts just reading it, MK/A are atrocious. I'm sorry for your suffering.

We had a c-band satellite dish growing up and my dad picked up a descrambler so we got all channels for free. We had a massive pile of vhs that we taped movies from the satellite and I wore out a few tapes that were my favorites for sure.

No cable. No satellite. One TV and two noisy little sisters who tended to get their way for the sake of quiet. I'm a martyr, I tells ya.

Today, in the same way, due to the cold, all the time is spent inside the room and a person gets bored there, then he spends the time in a good way by watching his favorite old movies.
