RETRO REVIEW : CROSSROADS (1986) AN ADVENTURE IN SEARCH OF THE BLUES - RETRO RESEÑA : CROSSROADS (1986) UNA AVENTURA EN BÚSQUEDA DEL BLUES

I am like those nostalgic old men who yearn for the old governments because they assured that life was better, in my case it is the cinema, the new does not really attract me much so I always start looking in the past. Among so many years I remembered a movie that I saw a long time ago and that was released almost 40 years ago, it's about Crossroads, a movie without many aspirations other than telling a good story based on some legends, but beyond that I love it because it's a great tribute to the blues music that I like so much, and that is the mother of rock n' roll. This film stars Ralph Macchio, the unforgettable Daniel Larusso from The Karate Kid and the actor Joe Seneca, together they will team up to go in search of the last song recorded by the legend and father of the blues, Robert Johnson.

Estoy como esos viejos nostálgicos que añoran los gobiernos antiguos porque aseguraban que se vivía mejor, en mi caso es el cine, realmente lo nuevo no me atrae mucho asó que siempre me pongo a buscar en el pasado. Entre tantos años recordé una película que vi hace mucho y que se estrenó hace casi 40 años, se trata de Crossroads, una película sin muchas aspiraciones más que contar una buena historia basada en algunas leyendas, pero más allá de eso me encanta porque es un gran homenaje a la música blues que tanto me gusta, y que es la madre del rock n´roll. Esta película esta protagonizada por Ralph Macchio, el inolvidable Daniel Larusso de Karate Kid y el actor Joe Seneca, juntos harán equipo para ir en búsqueda de la última canción grabada por la leyenda y padre del blues, Robert Jhonson.

I am not going to tell the film with specific details, but to make some evaluations and also allegories, because this film is rich in symbols that are interesting to interpret. The first of them is the search, we always see in fairy tales and movies the typology of the search, the hero must leave his region and go into the unknown to go in search of power. In this Case, Eugene goes in search of the latest song by Robert Johnson, his goal is to play it to become famous, like Erick Clapton or Keith Richards, the wise old man who guides the hero in his search here is Willie Brown, who does not have a shred of of heroism but a lot of life experience, it is he who tells Eugene that talent is not enough, but that he must go and seek adventure to discover what really makes the blues so powerful for those who play it with any instrument. In my opinion they are modern Don Quixote and Sancho Panza.

No voy a contar la película con detalles específicos sino hacer algunas valoraciones y también alegorías, porque esta película es rica en símbolos que son interesantes de interpretar. El primero de ellos es la búsqueda, siempre vemos en los cuentos de hadas y películas la tipología de la búsqueda, el héroe debe salir de su comarca e ir a lo desconocido para ir en búsqueda del poder. En este Caso Eugene va en búsqueda de la última canción de Robert Jhonson, su objetivo es tocarla para hacerse famoso, como Erick Clapton o Keith Richards, el viejo sabio quien guía al héroe en su búsqueda aquí es Willie Brown, quien no tiene una pizca de heroísmo pero si mucha experiencia de vida, es él quien le dice a Eugene que el talento no basta, sino que debe irse y buscar la aventura para descubrir lo que realmente hace al blues tan poderoso para quien lo toque con algún instrumento. A mi parecer son unos modernos Don Quijote y Sancho Panza.

After getting around some problems, the protagonists decide to travel like homeless people to the Mississippi delta, where according to Willie Brown's words the blues originated. On the way they run into Frances (Jami Gertz) a 17-year-old girl who is running away from her home, he has no choice but to collaborate with them in order to continue on his way. As Eugene advances on his journey, he loses his innocence, realizing how harsh and cruel the world is outside his safe Long Island, he establishes a better relationship with Willie BRown and understands that the latter is a very crafty old man who does not hesitate to use and manipulate but nevertheless lets out her humanity, while Frances does not hesitate to use her feminine attributes to take advantage of the situation.

Luego de sortear algunos problemas, los protagonistas deciden viajar como vagabundos al delta del Mississippi, donde según palabras de Willie Brown se originó el blues, en el camino se topan con Frances (Jami Gertz) una joven de 17 años que se encuentra huyendo de su casa, no tiene más remedio que colaborar con ellos para poder continuar su camino. Eugene mientras avanza en su travesía va perdiendo la inocencia, al darse cuenta de lo duro y cruel que es el mundo fuera de su segura Long Island, entabla más relación con Willie Brown y comprende que este último es un viejo muy mañoso que no duda en utilizar y manipular pero sin embargo deja salir su humanidad, Mientras que Frances no duda en utilizar sus atributos femeninos para sacar provecho de la situación.

A scene that I always liked is an altercation in two different bars that are located on the same street, one of the bars is for whites and the other is for blacks, in one they play country music and in the other they play blues. Willie gives Eugene a gun and tells him that it's time to get money, giving him to understand that he has to go to the white bar to play, Eugene goes but things don't go as expected and he was about to get hit but he was able to get out , then he goes looking for Willie at the black bar and when he enters he is aggressively approached by all those who were there, when they are going to take away his guitar Willie Brown goes up to the stage and takes out his harmonica letting out a large tune where everyone is silent, Willie with the microphone introduces Eugene to the crowd as a blouse player called "Chico Relámpago", Eugene goes up to the stage and together they play an unforgettable piece that makes the place explode. For me this staging was great scene, because it touched a sensitive subject of the history and the reality of the United States in a masterful way, not like now, where they give more importance to the color of skin than the abilities of people, if a movie like that were made today , the protagonist would be accused of "cultural appropriation", but it was the 80s, and people had different reasons to complain, that's why every time I see this tape I do it for the taste of well-made cinema.

Una escena que siempre me gustó es un altercado en dos bares diferentes que estan ubicados en la misma calle, uno de los bares es para blancos y el otro es para negros, en una tocan música country y en el otro tocan blues. Willie le da un arma a Eugene y le dice que es hora de consiga dinero, dándole a entender que tiene que ir al bar de blancos a tocar, Eugene va pero las cosas no salen como esperaban y estuvo a punto de ser golpeado pero pudo salir, después va a en búsqueda de Willie al bar de negros y al entrar es abordado de manera agresiva por todos los que ahí se encontraban, cuando van a quitarle su guitarra Willie Brown sube a la tarima y saca su ármonica dejando salir de ella una gran tonada donde todos hacen silencio, Willie con el micrófono presenta a Eugene a la multitud como un blusista apotada "Chico Relámpago", Eugene sube a la tarima y juntos tocan una pieza inolvidable que hace estallar al lugar.. Para mi fue genial esta puesta en escena, porque tocó un tema sensible de la historia y la realidad de Estados Unidos de una forma magistral, no como ahora, donde le dan más importancia al color de piel que las habilidades de las personas, si una película así se hiciera en la actualidad, el protagonista sería acusado de "apropiación cultural", pero eran los 80, y las personas tenían motivos diferentes para quejarse, por eso cada vez que veo esta cinta lo hago por el gusto del cine bien hecho.

The day after the big night, Franes leaves Eugene and continues on his way, he wakes up with the sad news and feels how his heart breaks since he had fallen in love with her, but it does not end there, Willie confesses in that moment that Robert Johnson's 30th song never existed, which was only a legend, all this ends with Eugene's innocence, but he manages to take himself away and realize that the song does exist, but not in a material way, the song is the experience that he has been gaining with the journey to become a blues player, that's when he understands what the blues is all about. Willie manipulated Eugene with that false story in order to get out of the asylum so he could finish something he had pending, and that is the final encounter and lesson of this film.

No todo es color de rosas, luego viene el queibre definitivo del héroe, ya no es conocer la crudeza del mundo sino también sentir como el mundo se desmorona. Al día siguiente de la gran noche, Franes abandona a Eugene y continúa su camino, e´l se despierta con la triste noticia y siente como su corazón se rompe ya que se había enamorado de ella, pero no termina ahí, Willie confiesa en ese momento que jamás existió la canción número 30 de Robert Jhonson, que solo era una leyenda, todo esto termina con la inocencia de Eugene, pero logra llevantarse y darse cuenta de que la canción si existe, pero no de forma material, la canción es la experiencia que el ha ido obteniendo con el viaje para convertirse en un blusista, es ahí cuando entiende de que se trata el blues. Willie manipulo a Eugene con esa historia falsa para poder salir del asilo y así poder terminar algo que tenía pendiente, y ese es el encuentro y la lección final de esta película.

They arrive at the meeting point waiting for the devil who does not take long to appear: a very refined and charismatic black man, here we understand why Willie wanted to escape from the asylum. In his youth he also made a pact with the devil in exchange for becoming a blues star like his friend Robert Johnson, but everything went wrong, and now he wanted to break the deal and have his soul back, but the devil doesn't accept, so who challenges them to defeat someone under his command, Eugene accepts the challenge because he feels he is ready to face something supernatural.

Ahora ambos se dirigen a donde todo comenzó, al cruce de caminos donde Robert Jhonson vendió su alma al diablo a cambio del mejor talento para el blues. Ellos llegan al punto de reunión a la espera del diablo quien no tarda en aparecer: un hombre negro muy refinado y carismático, aquí entendemos el por que Willie quería escapar del asilo. En su juventud también hizo un pacto con el diablo a cambio de convertirse en una estrella de blues como su amigo Robert Jhonson, pero todo salió mal, y ahora quería romper el trato y tener su alma de nuevo, pero el diablo no acepta, así que los reta a vencer a alguien que esta bajo su mando, Eugene acepta el desafío porque siente que esta listo para enfrentarse a algo sobrenatural.

I don't want to talk too much about the duel, because it's the rhapsody of the movie, it's the crescendo that makes your heart jump for what you're watching, but I'll just say that the young prodigy who is the devil's challenger is Steve Vai, one of the most prolific guitarists in the world of rock, the showdown is simply amazing stuff. So in hindsight it can be appreciated how each experience prepared Eugene to reach this moment, if he had not believed in that legend that forced him to leave his comfort zone, and take his guitar to go with an old man, he would not be there. fighting the devil himself. And I think that is the beauty of the film, without a doubt it is a Don Quixote, that instead of a horse walking like a vagabond, and instead of an old and rusty armor, it is an electric guitar, and instead of fighting for justice, is the love for the blues and become a blues player.

No quiero hablar mucho sobre el duelo, porque es la rapsodia de la película, es el crescendo que hace que el corazón salte del pecho por lo que estas observando, pero solo dire que el joven prodigio que es el retador del diablo es Steve Vai, uno de los guitarristas más prolijos del mundo del rock, el enfrentamiento es sencillamente algo asombroso. Así que en retrospectiva se puede apreciar como cada experiencia fue preparanfo a Eugene para llegar a este momento, sino hubiera creído en aquella leyenda que lo obligo a salir de su zona de confort, y tomar su guitarra para irse con un anciano, no estaría ahí combatiendo al mismo diablo. Y creo que es lo hermoso del film, sin duda es un Don Quijote, que en lugar de un caballo anda a pie como un vagabundo, y en lugar de una armadura vieja y oxidada, es una guitarra eléctrica, y en lugar de luchar por la justicia, es el amor por el blues y convertise en un blusista.

My final appreciation is that it is a film with feeling, just like the blues, raw, cruel, realistic, but not for that reason passionate, it is told following the classic sequence of a story, with good flashbacks from the past and loaded with a supernatural atmosphere. I certainly like the message that can be read between the lines: Go for what you love, face danger until you get it, get out of your comfort zone and venture out. At present this is hardly seen, nor is it told in this way, in the current tapes we see young people being born with extraordinary abilities, with zero effort, maturity and personal growth. Eugene learned that the blues wasn't like what they say in books and magazines, but rather that he had to go to the streets and live it to discover it for what it is, that's why I find this film like an oasis among so many bad things that are called cinema in Today, perhaps I am already a nostalgic old man, but I adore what is simple and well done at the same time.

Mi apreciación final es que es una película con sentimiento, así como el blues, crudo, cruel, realista, pero no por eso apasionado, esta contada siguiendo la secuencia clásica de una historia, con buenos flashbacks del pasado y cargada de una atmósfera sobrenatural. Sin duda me gusta el mensaje que se puede leer entre líneas: Ir por lo que amas, enfrentar el peligro hasta conseguirlo, salir de la zona de confort y aventurarse. En la actualidad esto casi no se ve, ni se cuenta de esta manera, en las cintas actuales vemos alos jóvenes nacer con capacidades extraordinarias, con cero esfuerzo, madurez y crecimiento personal. Eugene aprendió que el blues no como lo cuentan en los libros y revistas, sino que tenía que ir a las calles y vivirlo para descubrirlo tal cual es, por eso encuentro esta película como un oasis entre tanta cosa mal hecha que se le llama cine en la actualidad, tal vez ya sy un viejo nostálgico, pero adoro lo simple y bien hecho a la vez.
