The Gentlemen 2024 Review
I don't know about you but i think 2024 has already offered some great series with huge potential. Literally, every month there is one or two series that i would rate with 8/10 and above and i am not really that easy giving these reviews. You see after you watch thousands of movies/series/anime you start to have expectations in every aspect.
You pay attention to the plot, the character development, the dialogs, scenario, acting, sceneries, fight scenes if any, comedy/drama aspect, CGI and the list goes on forever. So yesterday The Gentlemen series came to my attention randomly while i was searching for a new series to watch.
I have seen the name a couple of weeks ago but to tell you the truth i didn't think that would be worth my time and boy i was so wrong. I later realized that the creator of this show is Guy Ritchie who you may know from Snatch and Sherlock Holmes.
The series is brand new it was released a couple of weeks ago (March 7th) through Netflix and has 8 episodes in total. I don't know whether there will be a second season or so but i really hope so as the show is pretty good and a bit different from any other we have seen, in a way ofc.
Plot
So this is another Mafia/Drugs story but with a twist. The story is set in UK and revolves around Eddie who is a young aristocrat working as a UN Soldier. He learns that his father is about to die and that he needs to come back home to see him. So he comes back to his family castle, note that his father is a duke, where he meets again with his family, his sister and his crazy big brother.
His father dies and even though by tradition the older kid gets to inherit everything, his father knowing that his eldest son is batshit crazy and stupid he leaves everything to Eddie. Ofc his elder brother doesn't take this lightly but he has no other choice.
Soon also, he will meet Ms. Glass an associate of his father who explains their business relationship which will continue now with Eddie. Pretty much the castle and the Duke as many other Dukes have financial issues and basically, one of the biggest Marijuana cartels let's say, had a deal with his dad.
The deal is that in an area inside the dukedom, they have an underground plantation and basically pay let's say a rent fee to the Duke. This is considered a great move as most of the Dukes have many ties with the government which makes it quite hard for everyone to assume that they are involved in drugs. Even if they do so it's difficult to search them due to their connections as well as the connection of the cartel. So in other words it's the perfect place.
Now the new Duke Eddie will face the dilemma of what to do and how he will manage to get rid of the Mafia from his estate. To do that though he will need to get his hands dirty as well which makes the show interesting.
Good & Bad
Now the interesting thing is the plot itself. It's not a mysterious plot or something, it's actually pretty straightforward but the interesting thing, at least for me is that i haven't seen anything like that, that involves the estate of a Duke and a drug plantation at the same place. I never talk about acting in general, i only point out if it's good which it is actually pretty good. If it was bad i would talk more!
Also, the fight scenes, even though not many, are pretty good, the music is quite awesome as well as the sceneries but the most unique thing in my mind are the characters. It's one of them has his own personality and i don't only talk about the protagonists. Some of the "villains" let's say are pretty damn unique, like the Gospel, for example, a crazy Mafia boss that is all about Jesus while he is killing people.
The only negative thing i have to say is the brother of Eddie, Freddy, who is basically quite crazy and stupid which makes it quite entertaining and the actor does a pretty awesome work in that regard. The negative thing is that there is no further development for him in the show. Let's hope that in case of a second season, it will be!
Overall, if you like these kinds of shows then it is definitely worth your time. If you want to see something with less action, no drugs/mafia plot and with a deeper plot then this sho isn't for you. I would rate it with 8/10 and i think it has potential for 1 more or 2 seasons that can uplift my rate to an 8.5 even 9 if it's done correctly.
