Interior Chinatown 2024 Series Review
This is another new series that was released in November 2024. To tell you the truth as i was searching for something new to see this one came at random. The main reason that i decided to give it a go was Jimmy O. Yang who i knew from his stand-up comedy videos and career in general.
From what i remember the series can be found in HULU, it has one season so far and 10 episodes in total. Based on how it ended there is no need for a second season but if they want to make more money out of the success of the first season then there will be another one.
Plot
So the story is a bit confusing at first as not many realize what's really happening. Basically, we are in a screenplay where Willis Wu (Yang), has stereotypical roles in the Black and White play, portraying an oriental man working as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown just making enough to live by the next day.
His family consists of his Dad who used to play the Sifu role and now just plays an old Asian male and his mom who used to play an Asian Seductress and is the old Asian female. He had an older brother who had the top role for an Asian which was that of the Kung Fu Guy but he didn't like it and is now missing.
There are other stereotypical roles as well but the main focus is that Willis WU gets to see an abduction and he starts investigating thinking that this is the time he was waiting, to get out of the background roles and finally be the protagonist. He will then uncover a lot of mysteries that circle Chinatown!
What I Liked and What I Didn't
To begin with i like most of the characters and this is a different series than the rest meaning that even though the messages are basically the same we keep on hearing each day, the scenario seems unique. Note that this series is based on the Novel of the same name that was published in 2020.
As i was saying the scenario is unique and interesting and i was really looking forward to what's next and what the next episode will bring. Thus, i quite enjoyed it to be honest even though i got "bored" with the inner meanings and the ending.
Now let's get to the things that i didn't like. First and foremost this series isn't for anyone. You need to take some time to think about some stuff and also can be confusing for many. I was watching it with my girlfriend and she didn't understand a lot of things going on. As i said the ending was boring and, to be honest i wanted something more interesting, i was like "really now?".
Finally, the whole stereotypes "thing" in the movies is pretty lame, to be honest. If that was 20 years ago i would agree but now not only we have representation we have over-representation to the extent of wokeness which destroyed a lot of movies/series/sequels and prequels. No Asians don't play only Kung Fu roles nowadays, i literally have seen them playing Doctors, Policemen, Crime Bosses, Straight Couple, Gay Couple, Lawyers, Businessmen, Politicians literally everything.
In any case, even if this was a bit annoying in my eyes and ears the series was still quite enjoyable and i would urge everyone to watch if you are searching for something different. In total, i would give it 6.5/10.
