Hysteria 2024 Review: An Underrated Series
Yesterday i watched a series that is a hidden gem if you ask me. I didn't expect it to be that good, at best to be honest i thought it would be okish and be like one of these series you just watch when eating. The series is quite underrated and i would suggest that you all go and watch it noooow!
The series aired this year (2024), in mid-October through Peacock. It falls under the mystery, horror, and thriller genres. The creator is Matthew Scott Kane who is also known for American Horror Story and It's always Sunny in Philadelphia. Also note that there are in total of 8 episodes and it's unclear whether a second season will come out.
As always this will be a Spoiler free review so brace yourselves!
Plot
So the story has a similar "stranger things" kind of vibe. Set in the town of Happy Hollow, Michigan in 1989, teenager Dylan Campbell along with his best friends Jordy and Spud are members of an aspiring heavy metal band named Dethkrunch. They are basically the outcasts of the school. At the same time and actually during the first scenes of the episode, we see two teens making out while some intruders are trying to abduct them. The only clue left is a Pentagram.
Back in the school and we got these 2 teens missing while the group of friends were trying to invite everyone to their music show. Ofc none is interested and Dylan is disappointed as his crush who is the most popular girl in school will also not join.
Realizing that the whole pentagram and Satanist stuff are on the rise he convinces his two friends to create a fake cult in order to make them look like a badass and "dark" and attract everyone to their show which they manage to do so. At the same time strange things are happening in the area.
Also, at the same time the police try to investigate the missing and find the kids and the culprit and in case there is an actual cult in order to shed some light to the community. One thing you need to note is that the chief of the police is the one and only Bruce Campbell!
What I Liked and What I Didn't
Honestly, a rule you have to follow is that when you read or see Bruce Campbell playing in a movie or show you have to watch it. Now starting with the good things, the cast does an amazing job. Literally, everyone is spot on and i had sometime to see something like this. There is a mystery that keeps on going and gets you hooked until the last couple of episodes which is awesome as i watched the series in a go, so you can imagine how hooked i was.
Something that i will need to point out and add in the positives is the narrative and the "messages" that this series manages to highlight if you are a bit careful. Note that the tile "Hysteria" is 100% spot on in regards to the whole plot and what's happening.
People are fragile, they can create new realities, they fear and that fear can lead them to do and believe anything and that series highlights this more than anything and with incredible accuracy. Also, it's interesting to see the whole "Satanists" kind of vibe/fear something that's basically now a thing of the past if you ask me. People are now afraid of "new" things and we don't get to hear in the news, among groups, in social media a lot of stuff related to it. Back in the days, it was like a hot topic, especially with the heavy metal music rising.
Honestly, the only thing i didn't like is that is a lot of things that need to be answered. I don't know whether the creator expected that a second season would come out 100% and i really hope that it will but at the point the series ended there are a lot of mysteries left unanswered.
If you check IMDb it has 7.1/10, but i would give it 8.5/10!
