El Páramo, controversial

I recently saw the Spanish film El Páramo and it was pretty heavy.
At first it was a bit slow and I didn't quite get the plot, but the more it went on the more I got hooked.
It takes place in a lost village in 19th century Spain, a turbulent and violent time when war and famine imposed their own rules on a battered and consumed population.
The action takes place in a lonely and remote rural home, where a married couple and their young son live.

What struck me most was the ominous and murky atmosphere that pervades from minute one.
It puts you in that desolate wasteland that is scary just to look at, with that sense of dark secrets hidden underneath. And the plot takes disturbing twists and turns as it progresses.
The other thing I would highlight are the performances. The actor who plays the investigator is super believable, conveying an ever increasing sense of hopelessness. And the crazy people in the village are very well chosen, they seem to come out of a nightmare.
In general terms, I think it manages to capture very well that sense of unease so typical of the abandoned villages of Spain. The suspense builds slowly but surely, leaving you with your heart in your fist in the final minutes.

It is very worthwhile for those who are looking for that disturbing cinema that leaves you pondering for days. Good thing I don't live in the middle of nowhere haha. Highly recommended if you like psychological horror.
