Review The Fifth Element (esp/eng)

En un futuro lejano el militar retirado y ahora taxista Korben Dallas se encuentra con que me asignan una nueva misión, proteger a la mujer que tiene el deber de salvar al mundo de una gran amenaza, ahora ambos deben cumplir con esa misión antes de que sea tarde, a la vez que deben evitar los esfuerzos de Enmanuel Zorg por eliminarlos.

Está película estrenada en 1997 ha logrado convertirse en una obra de culto que ha acumulado una gran cantidad de fans desde hace ya casi 30 años. Aunque en su momento no fue valorada y también fue destrozada por la crítica, eso no cambia el amor que tenemos los fans de esta historia y la emoción con que disfrutamos las dos horas de emoción que está gran obra nos da.

Está película fue dirigida por Luc Besson, quien también nos trajo grandes cintas como El Demoledor, Día De La Independencia, Lucy, etc. Aunque los efectos especiales mostrados ya se ven algo envejecidos, eso no quita la brillantez y desvergüenza con la creó una gran historia que nos deja asombrados. Aunque el CGI flaquea en algunas escenas, saben aprovechar los efectos especiales prácticos, los sets lucen muy bien detallados y el maquillaje y prótesis para crear a los diferentes alienígenas vistos a lo largo de la cinta lucen geniales.

El mundo mostrado grita Cyberpunk por todas partes, tomando inspiración de cómics europeos y británicos. Los escenarios, vestuarios y los peinados parecen salidos de las viñetas, pero la trama no es tan oscura como en esas historias, lo que muestra cómo se pueden tomar diferentes inspiraciones y hacer algo nuevo.

Cada elemento visto por muy alocado y absurdo que luzca es completamente necesario para crear un futuro impactante y divertido. Lo que hace tan especial a todo el argumento visto en El Quinto Elemento es que no se toma en serio a su mismo, eso no impide que nos dé momentos de sentimiento, escenas de catarsis, todo eso muy bien envuelto en un humor simple que no rompe la tensión de mala manera.

Lo que hace que este film resalte luego de tantos años es que tiene una gran variedad de personajes carismáticos, y me refiero a muchos de ellos. Bruce Willis es perfecto para Korben Dallas, siendo el clásico héroe tosco de buen corazón, pasando a una novata Mila Jovovich quien encarnó a Leeloo que se volvió un personaje de culto incluso por los que no han visto la película, luego tenemos al sacerdote Cornelius interpretado por Ian Hola, al divertido Ruby Rhod por Chris Tucker y a uno de mis antagonistas favoritos: Zorg interpretado por Gary Oldman.

Lo que complementa todo es la excelente y anacrónica banda sonora compuesta por Eric Serra, que gracias a esa rareza combina tan bien con la historia mostrada.

Es de esas películas que nunca se vuelve aburrida, incluso si te sabes los diálogos, ha dejado su huella en el género de la ciencia ficción y es de esas producciones que nos hacen amar al cine.

In a distant future the retired military and now cab driver Korben Dallas finds himself assigned a new mission, to protect the woman who has the duty to save the world from a great threat, now both must fulfill that mission before it's too late, while they must avoid the efforts of Enmanuel Zorg to eliminate them.

This film, released in 1997, has become a cult film that has accumulated a huge fan base for almost 30 years. Although at the time it was not appreciated and was also trashed by critics, that does not change the love we fans have for this story and the excitement with which we enjoy the two hours of emotion that this great work gives us.

This film was directed by Luc Besson, who also brought us great movies like The Demolition Man, Independence Day, Lucy, etc. Although the special effects shown already look somewhat aged, that does not detract from the brilliance and shamelessness with which he created a great story that leaves us amazed. Although the CGI falters in some scenes, they know how to take advantage of the practical special effects, the sets look very well detailed and the makeup and prosthetics to create the different aliens seen throughout the film look great.

The world shown screams Cyberpunk throughout, taking inspiration from European and British comics. The sets, costumes and hairstyles look straight out of the comics, but the plot is not as dark as in those stories, which shows how you can take different inspirations and make something new.

Every element seen, no matter how crazy and absurd it may seem, is completely necessary to create an impactful and fun future. What makes the whole plot of The Fifth Element so special is that it doesn't take itself seriously, but that doesn't stop it from giving us moments of sentiment, scenes of catharsis, all wrapped up nicely in a simple humor that doesn't break the tension in a bad way.

What makes this film stand out after so many years is that it has a great variety of charismatic characters, and I mean a lot of them. Bruce Willis is perfect for Korben Dallas, being the classic good-hearted gruff hero, moving on to a newbie Mila Jovovich who played Leeloo who became a cult character even by those who haven't seen the film, then we have the priest Cornelius played by Ian Hola, the funny Ruby Rhod by Chris Tucker and one of my favorite antagonists: Zorg played by Gary Oldman.

What complements everything is the excellent and anachronistic soundtrack composed by Eric Serra, which thanks to that rarity combines so well with the story shown.

It is one of those movies that never gets boring, even if you know the dialogues, it has left its mark in the science fiction genre and is one of those productions that make us love movies.
