Piercing eyes
We are back to the Alcobaça monastery. After hours spent wandering around the lower levels, rooms, and balconies, I have reached the top level. One can easily start to envy the monks in a place like this. Spacious, filled with light, a nice garden, a personal cook and probably quite quiet. It was so easy to relax and chill there.
This was the last part to visit. A walk around the top corridor from where I could admire all the gargoyles with piercing eyes. Every single one was different.
Its a funny thing how we tend to remember certain things. As a very young girl, I was walking around Wroclaw city with my sister, and she told me the name for the sticking out part to spit the rainwater. It was the first time I heard it, and it was enough. In Polish it has a funny name gargoyle = rzygacz, which you could also call a person that is throwing up. Makes sense, doesn't it? :)
A young pigeon rests on the ledge. I am surprised he was sitting there in the full sun. Even though it wasn't very hot, the sun was already kicking hard.
A little walk around, and from this point you can see the round construction around a little fountain I was already showing you in this post. It is right inside.
But wait... we can go to that little balcony on top...
...to find an old sun clock (right photo below).
There it is.
Apparently this side is to show only afternoon hours. There are two other sides that show time at other parts of the day. This clock dates back to 1687.
That balcony was like a frying pan :p. As beautiful the surroundings were, it was a pleasure to hide again among the stone walls away from the sun.

piercing... as in the excellent gradation of these monochromes!
striking contrast in the stonework! green filter?
No filters. Just photoshop editing :)
how's photoshop editing not a filter... krkrkr...
I wasn't actually expecting you to use an actual green filter in front of the lens when shooting this on b/w film 📸
let's say it this way... did you pull down the greens in the channel mixer? it's not actually important... i was just nerding out a bit 🤓
edit: and now that I think about it... I think what i meant was a red-filter... 🤔
And that is exactly what I thought :D :D
Let me think... Not the greens. But the blues to darken the sky. Then fixed exposure and added some shadows - this normally darkens all the wall stains.
edit: Red... was I messing with red? Maybe a little...
would have been impressive, though!
😂
especially having film in my Nikon...
And I was about to ask how can we read the time if there are just these marks for the afternoon :D
It is always cool to see gargoyles!
In the morning everyone sleeps and there is no need for a clock :D :D
I spot them like you spot the stickers :)

Awesome for your post today, of course I'm very interested in seeing some beautiful shots of friends, and this is my favorite
Thanks! I like this one too :)
Interesting contrast in your blog...the monastery, with its long magnificent history (I just read up on it!) and Club Makumba, which has nothing old about it.
I love their music. New to me. Great sound, hard to pin down in any genre.
Your blog is a treat to history buffs (me) and experimental jazz fans (me).
I actually just found the band recently too when I was searching for something to black and white. nice find I must say and I am glad you enjoyed it too :)
😇🌷
Wow! It's so Gothic! How much I love it. I'm sure that in cloudy weather with heavy dramatic clouds, it looks very ominous.
Oh yea, it is pretty amazing! The whole place is so pretty!
WOW ... what an amazing journey in Black and White!
Glad you like it :)
The photo is very beautiful and interesting, especially the cotton clouds that are visible... for me 👍👍👍
Thanks!
Ok 👍
